The Lord Mayor of Dublin blocked a mother for making this statement

^

"Children should NOT be signing ANY kind of pledge. It’s not right. ^

It's hard to know why the Lord Mayor felt the need to block a mother for saying this.
TENI and BeLongTo are involved, needless to say.

This is just weird. Imagine if children were forced to recite a pledge of allegiance to the flag like in the USA. I really must buy a copy of Trans by Helen Joyce for my local community school.

If the mayor of Dublin read through the replies I think she would realise it is a very unpopular strategy.

What is the point of using twitter if you don't engage with the replies?

Jaysmith71 · 05/09/2021 11:00

To be fair, Kids In America (whoooah-oooah!) aren't formally or legally forced to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. But there is a hell of a lot of social pressure.

334bu · 05/09/2021 11:14

Getting absolutely roasted on Twitter . Hope they actually read the replies to their post.

They're not forced to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.
Jaysmith71 · 05/09/2021 11:23

Indeed Alfonso. They have their First Amendment right to free speech.

And Irish kids have Articles 9, 10 & 11 of the ECHR.

MadamBatty · 05/09/2021 12:37

Should the Lord Mayor even be getting involved in any of this? Surely her (ze, Zim, they?) role is ceremonial?

TurquoiseBaubles · 05/09/2021 13:57

I wonder if the Lord Mayor is in charge of his or her (don't want to assume Hmm) own twitter account. I wouldn't be surprised if not.

I would, however, be surprised if he or she didn't ignore every reply, and block as many people as possible for asking questions; that's the norm with anyone official in Ireland Hmm

Abhannmor · 05/09/2021 14:14

We took the pledge to abstain from alcohol at our Confirmation. I'm sure there was no legal requirement. But every child I my year signed up. The Lord Mayor's FB page is not looking good for her in the comments!

Mulletsaremisunderstood · 05/09/2021 14:22

Is is Hazel Chu? She's a headwreck.
I heard her on radio a while back trying to defend the upcoming hate crime legislation, (which I believe is being pushed through by TRAs to support their position and shut down debate) and she was basically admitting she hadn't actually read through the legislation, in response to a caller saying it had issues and the potential to be misused.

She then went on to say, oh it can be amended when needed if it isn't working right Hmm. It really seemed like she was trying to push through the legislation without acknowledgment that it could be problematic.

I think she has well and truly drunk the koolaid on this issue.

So frustrating that we don't have any legitimate resistance to this stuff on a political level. Every major party is flying the rainbow flag with abandon without looking at what is really at play here.

MiladyBerserko · 05/09/2021 14:51

This is The New Catechism.

Another pile of imposed beliefs on children to learn and chant. Threats of excommunication and ostracisation.

Progressive. My. Arse.

No, Alison Gilliland is the current Mayor (ceremonial role, not actually elected by the public). She is a member of Labour (who really need to take a look at why they are so out of touch with the vast majority of the public). Allison has previously been Equality Officer for the INTO Hmm

No, children aren't forced to @AlfonsoTheMango but it takes a kid with strong nerves to refuse to stand up.

Nellodee · 05/09/2021 15:42

That is quite the ratio.

Fitt · 05/09/2021 15:52

Normalise the display of pronouns.

It's barking mad.

Bloody hilarious.

What are your pronouns Father Ted?

zanahoria · 05/09/2021 16:05

Saw the headline and I thought he had blocked his own mother

zanahoria · 05/09/2021 16:07

so what are these pledge packs?

I am a bit confused

PlanDeRaccordement · 05/09/2021 16:10

Children aren’t usually forced. When we lived in the US, my children were told it was up to them if they wanted to recite the pledge of allegiance or not. They chose not to as we are French, but they noticed a few other children also did not say the pledge.

They did think it was strange how every classroom had a US flag in it, and you face the flag and put your right hand on your heart when you say the pledge.

TurquoiseBaubles · 05/09/2021 16:20

I was the only child in my entire group (five schools done together) to not make the pledge at confirmation. The nuns went bonkers when I told them I wasn't going to, and called in my parents, only to discover that they had forbidden me to.

It was blamed on my Protestant mother. The mother who, by the way, wasn't allowed to come to my confirmation as at the time only sponsors were allowed and they had to be, naturally, Catholic.

I was also made to sit in a pew by myself so the bishop could skip me out.

Same old same old in Ireland it seems. It would take a brave and probably foolhardy child to refuse to sign the current gender-woo pledge Angry

Jaysmith71 · 05/09/2021 17:19

And when the Temperence Pledge came in, nobody ever had a drink again and all the pubs in Ireland were forced to close?

Now I have got that right, haven't I?

Deliriumoftheendless · 05/09/2021 17:24

To be fair, Kids In America (whoooah-oooah!)
Very good 😂

TurquoiseBaubles · 05/09/2021 17:32

That was my dad's reasoning, Jaysmith. He wouldn't let any of us take a pledge he knew we had no intention of keeping. He said forcing children to lie in front of their peers was abuse. That went down well with the nuns Hmm

Similar applies now. Any child who signs this pledge is being ordered to support "gender identity" as a concept.

Jaysmith71 · 05/09/2021 17:34

Irish Nuns very against child abuse.

1lov3comps · 05/09/2021 17:49

Does anyone know if it's being rolled
out to all Irish secondary schools or just Dublin ones? The tweet mentions the DCC (Dublin City Council) but I can't see whether that's the extent of the rollout.
I have a daughter who has just started secondary and want to see if she will be likely to get this - as I would not be happy and would be strongly encouraging her not to sign it.
