On LinkedIn *an 'Add your Pronouns' call to action message has appeared for some people:

"Show your pronouns on your profile to let others know how to refer to you. Add pronouns"

Which leads to a form with these choices:
She/Her
He/Him
They/Them
Custom

'Learn More' links to a help page: www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/129291
(Might vary depending on what region, country, part of the world you are in)

Saying....

^Use Gender Pronouns on LinkedIn

Important: This feature is being gradually rolled out only in a few select regions/languages at this time.

We’re committed to building a more diverse and inclusive platform, and gender pronouns play an important role in creating a welcoming community for members of all gender identities. Now, you can add your gender pronouns to your profile to let others know how to refer to you.

This is optional, and if you choose to display your gender pronouns, you’ll be able to control who sees them. The visibility options are:

1st degree-connections: Only LinkedIn members you’re directly connected with
All LinkedIn members: All members signed into LinkedIn
Based on your visibility choices, your gender pronouns will appear next to your name on LinkedIn in three places: your profile, the feed (whenever you share or comment on a post), and in messages.

We understand details about your identity are personal, so members won’t be able to search for you based on your pronouns.

Note: If you choose the pronouns she/her or he/him from the pronouns dropdown (options available in select regions only), we may use this selection to infer your gender.

Yet nothing on there to denote your sexuality, level of disability, religion, whether you're neuro typical or neuro diverse...

GNCQ · 11/08/2021 07:08

"more diverse and inclusive..."
Those words give me the chills nowadays

McPancreas · 11/08/2021 07:15

I wonder how long it will be before people and organisations realise only a tiny group of narcissists and virtue signalling sycophants give a toss about what pronouns other people use about them?

OneEpisode · 11/08/2021 07:18

“Note: If you choose the pronouns she/her or he/him from the pronouns dropdown ( ) we may use this selection to infer your gender”
Why would LinkedIn want to infer my gender? What possible use is that to them?

GoWalkabout · 11/08/2021 07:22

Its optional I think that's fine.

AaronStampler · 11/08/2021 07:29

This is a guess, but possibly it would affect the adverts that they show to you.

LadyGAgain · 11/08/2021 07:32

Fuck off Linked In

Chersfrozenface · 11/08/2021 07:46

Time for my rolling rota of pronouns to appear on LinkedIn.

I'm very much hoping to retire soon, so even if anyone notices, it won't affect my career.

MoreJammyDodgersPlease · 11/08/2021 08:15

LinkedIn may infer your age and your gender based on information in your profile. For example, we may infer your gender based on your first name or on the pronouns used when others recommend you for skills. We may infer your age based on when you graduated from school. We do not infer age or gender based on profile photos.

And yes, it is used for advertising and providing "aggregated insights".

I have noticed a few pronouns appearing, none of which have been anything other than the obvious.

Tesla73 · 11/08/2021 09:21

I can see this being a help to prospective employers: if i was to get an application form with pronouns on or see someones linkedin profile showing same I wouldnt even consider them as I'd know what kind of nightmare they would be once through the door.

So in a way they are doing employers a favour.

Also what the hell has pronouns got to do with the working world? What bearing does this have on your ability to do a job or advertise yourself to the working world?

I was always taught keep your application form or CV relevant and keep to the basics - should my CV now detail my sexual orientation, marital status, how many kids I've got, am I a cat or a dog person, favourite musical genres, what parents I still have living?

AssassinatedBeauty · 11/08/2021 09:24

The only people I have seen with pronouns in their linked in profile are men who give he/him pronouns and are obviously male. I question the use or point of men making their male status explicit.

FindTheTruth · 11/08/2021 09:24

The problem is, many don't know what the hell is going on and will unwittingly comply and enter pronouns. The fact it's optional is buried behind a click which most users won't bother with. And most don't realise what it signifies accepting queer theory (accepting self-ID, males in women's sports, prisons, refuges). My stomach gets a sick knot when I see a pronoun because I don't know if they're an extremist or naieve.

Same here!
Forgotthebins · 11/08/2021 09:52

Will they roll it it out among languages which don’t have gendered pronouns? Or are those language groups expected to allow themselves to be colonised by English so that people can more conveniently stereotype each other?

Tesla73 · 11/08/2021 09:54

My workplace is a SW champ and is rolling out a pronouns CBT (i've done mine and it was ridiculously pointless) and although the email accompanying it says its voluntary so many people I used to have a modicum of respect for have now put their pronouns in their email sigs.

To me its insulting because as someone who is nearly 50 I dont need someones email sig to tell me that the woman I have worked with for over 10 years is a she/her.

So far the only one on my immediate team to comply is the latest member who has come from the customer service area and is quite young but this where the "diverse & inclusive" effs me off because far from making me go "Aah how lovely" when i see the pronoun sig it actually makes me angry. So to me its divisive because its now an Us & Them situation - with the virtue signallers on one side and us on the other. And its voluntary? Really? So if a role comes up and its between someone who is signed up to the pronoun gang and someone who isnt the best person for the job will get it?

Because up to now I have been able to seperate this from my workplace as i dont think topics such as this and politics, religion etc are appropriate for the workplace but now off the back of this CBT managers are being encouraged to have a chat with their staff about it so now I will have no choice but to address this at work to my boss when we have this inevitable box ticking chat.

Plus what is there to discuss? Most of us at work have no contact with anyone in their daily lives who chooses to signal their pronouns so who is this for? Most of us on our team know that this pronoun nonsense comes from instagram & TikTok and sad attention seeking celebs so will be wondering why they are now doing a CBT on it and having a "discussion" with management.

Me too. Because it means the opposite.

I agree and wonder if women are discriminated against in promotions, recruitment and generally because of it

How fucking dare they, the massive hypocrites. And they mean sex the donuts. I'm tempted to, as a woman, obvious from my profile, change mine to he/him.

KittenKong · 11/08/2021 10:24

I now unconnect anyone who does this and don’t accept requests from anyone that does too. It’s just a load of twaddle.

FindTheTruth · 11/08/2021 10:26

Blueticked accounts trolling women and abuser accounts sending death/rape threats typically have pronouns. it's not a flag I want to fly to signify I agree with their actions. it's not a religion I want to join.

QueenPeary · 11/08/2021 10:30

It’s grim for all the reasons discussed, but it looks to me like LinkedIn have been put under pressure to offer this (they absolutely will have been) and they have made an effort to make it optional and usable for those who want it, not acted like anyone should do it - which I think is the right approach given if they refused to offer it there would be a shitstorm.

And yes it shows you who is and isn’t on board with the ideology which can be helpful.

KittenKong · 11/08/2021 10:40

They didn’t have to. If you felt so inclined, you could just put it in your bio (hey I’m a gal in case you couldn’t tell from my bio pic!). I’ve never seen a single one that I didn’t think ‘well, duh’.

Kittii · 11/08/2021 10:49

I find it very hard not to judge anyone who has obvious pronouns in their signature (e.g. Ruth she/her and David he/him) and assume that their critical thinking skills are not up to much.

It's also a political statement. Imagine if companies starting "suggesting" that people put a certain political slogan in their signature? Something like "Properly fund the NHS" or "Defund the police". Its the same principle. People are being coerced (and often pressured by their employer) to show their support for a political standpoint on gender ideology.

Completely agree.
