Man does a thing considered to be female and everyone is losing their minds over how ‘cute’ it is.

@Clymene

Tomorrow knitting in his crying women PJs
Blimey that shirt (pjs?) is a bit grim

Afraid I can’t see him and unsee the baby buying anymore

But an openly gay man in the public eye doing a traditionally female hobby, proudly, is definitely challenging toxic masculinity.

It doesn't.

Toxic masculinity is behaviours that damage women and children. How does tom knitting or not knitting either damage or protect anyone?

It's a man knitting. That's all.

Toxic masculinity is the idea that doing something considered ‘for the girls’ makes you less of a man. Knitting on a public stage, and proudly posting the results on your very popular Instagram absolutely challenges that idea.

crikey, challenging toxic masculinity is not knitting

not exploiting women even if you really, really want something only they can provide would be challenging toxic masculinity

I think maybe his age plays a part too though, knitting isn't generally associated with young people. My friends think it's funny that I do cross stitching and I am a young (ish) female.

@Pumperthepumper struggling to see how knitting challenges toxic masculinity. It's not really based around activities, I think a lot of people are reading far too much into it.

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 02/08/2021 22:20

what is the good that arises from Tom Daley posting pictures of himself knitting? (while wearing PJs with tits on I note)

why are people so excited? how will it make the world a better place?

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 02/08/2021 22:26

@Mrsjamin

Yeah I'm not sure I can think someone's cute who is all for transwomen in sports but knows exactly what a woman is when he needs two women to donate an egg and carry his baby for 9 months.
THIS

Also I find his self publicity quite nauseating in general 🤷‍♀️ but it seems like people like to coo over things he does not sure it's specific to knitting.

Personally I find the idea that knitting is a female coded activity weird - my Grandpa knitted more than anyone else in my family.

Clymene · 02/08/2021 22:26

@Pumperthepumper - I can't find anything in that wiki page that says that knitting is challenging toxic masculinity.

Can you quote the specific bit please? I think I've missed it.

The gender roles bit.

I find it vaguely creepy.

SmallPug · 02/08/2021 22:28

Sod the knitting. He exploited a woman's body and bought a baby.

Specifically this quote: avoiding the appearance of either femininity or weakness

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 02/08/2021 22:38

knitting makes you weak now?

Shock

Seriously, what good things will happen because Tom Daley has revealed that he sometimes knits?

Did you miss the ‘femininity’ part?

I swear mumsnet is getting worse, this is incredible.

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 02/08/2021 22:42

knitting is feminine? Not especially I wouldn't have thought

I still dunno what good things are going to happen cos Tom got his needles out

how is it a good thing?

Just before we get into this - you know just as many men who knit as women? It’s a non-gendered hobby, in your opinion? No stereotypes associated with knitting at all?
Clymene · 02/08/2021 22:48

No, what's incredible is you holding up knitting as some kind of fatal (size 7) needle into the eye of 'toxic masculinity'.

It's a reach that even a few dropped stitches isn't going to solve.
