My fear is that by the time the next Olympics comes around we won't even know who the transwomen athletes are. There are signs of that already. I think the time to make a fuss is now.

highame · 02/08/2021 08:12

I wonder if the IOC and other organisations such as the BBC have had huge backlash (they're not telling us but....) and that the IOC made decisions about women without consulting women. They have now realised this is an enormous error. Don't forget, many countries will also be objecting. Given the turnaround from an IOC official saying something along the lines of of course we all know transwomen are women, to an acknowledgement that this isn't the case.

I look forward to the 'be kind' being the ultimate discussion tool coming up against reality in a very public way. Denton's must be tearing their hair out 'stealth you idiots' Grin

oldwomanwhoruns · 02/08/2021 08:13

R4 just now, "... will compete in a different gender category to the one she was born..."

Um, how about sex categories?

ChateauMargaux · 02/08/2021 08:14

Why do we not hear from women on this.. in the words of Ruth Bader Ginsburg 'Women belong In places where decisions are being made". If we are not part of the discussion, the solutions cannot represent our needs.

bellinisurge · 02/08/2021 08:18

This mushing of sex and gender for our delicate ears is maddening and is exploited by trans extremist activists.
There are powerful trans voices like Scott Nugent trying to stop people falling for this horseshit

BettyFilous · 02/08/2021 08:20

@StandWithYou

I don’t have much confidence in the ‘new’ IOC guidelines due to be replaced.

JH isn’t a very good interviewer - agree the interviewer is having to work hard to get any responses out of her. I wish they wouldn’t just focus on testosterone but look at the other advantages.

Harper said in the interview that TW were bigger and stronger. I need to listen again to double check how it was worded. Sounded to me like Harper was backing away slowly from the IOC policy.
Maskless · 02/08/2021 08:25

@Taswama

Even if she doesn't win, she has still taken the Olympic experience away from a woman who deserved to be there. Good that this is being covered.

Discussing with Emma Hilton and Joanna Harper on R5 now.

Maskless · 02/08/2021 08:27

YET AGAIN no women asking or answering the questions, ffs.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 02/08/2021 08:29

Bbc getting this in early

I.e. we will not respond & block anyone who points out Hubbard is male

EastWestWhosBest · 02/08/2021 08:29

BBC Olympics coverage on website is highlighting Laurel as "first openly transgender athlete" to compete. Is that because the archer the other day didn't mention it and the footballer doesn't count for some reason?

Just as we all said - the Olympics are showcasing the dystopian future for women's sport. Judging by the public reaction, they understand the issues and the demands to "be kind" are having less and less influence.

BingBongSong · 02/08/2021 08:40

I just caught the end of it - after the interview, the female Radio 5 presenter quickly butted in with the UK entrant's 'be kind' message. Did they think about being kind to the women who were denied a place on the team because of Hubbard? The UK entrant is not considered a medal contender by the way!

I'm sick of being told to be kind. The interview frustrated me and I felt Emma Hilton had to be very careful with what she said.

We were told "at the end of the day, Laurel is an individual who has been under immense pressure" along with exhortations to be kind. Someone here said that "be kind" really meant "be quiet" and I agree with them completely.

FindTheTruth · 02/08/2021 08:43

Dr Nic Williams was needed in this discussion. Clarity, truth and facts in response to Joanna Harper.

highame · 02/08/2021 08:44

Though we are moving forward. Just 12 months ago, BBC would have taken down all those comments.

Someone here said that "be kind" really meant "be quiet" and I agree with them completely. me too but we're way past that now

KittenKong · 02/08/2021 08:53

Oh I missed it! But then I am banned from discussing it in the house though...

KittenKong · 02/08/2021 08:55

I did hear the news this morning when they said something about them competing in an event when they had been born in the different ‘gender’. So I rolled over and went back to sleep.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 02/08/2021 08:55

Laurel is under immense pressure

Which is entirely self inflicted!

KittenKong · 02/08/2021 08:58

I imagine other team mates and potential team mates are under more pressure, killing themselves to be included in the team- and those who ‘just missed out’ after years of training.

KittenKong · 02/08/2021 08:58

On now...

KittenKong · 02/08/2021 08:58

R4 that is...

WinterIsGone · 02/08/2021 09:30

It wouldn't surprise me if the new guidelines state that the level of testosterone should be reduced to 5nmol/litre rather than 10nmol/litre, and they think that will solve the problem! I will be very disappointed though.

WobblyLondoner · 02/08/2021 09:30

Nobody ever talks about the fact that we only talk about one side of this issue - that affecting those born male competing as female. Have there ever been any examples of someone who was born a woman competing at Olympic level as a man? If not, I wonder why that is?
