Hi witches,

I'm pleased to see the Hubbard travesty appearing in aibu, but worry that the increased awareness is going to lead to an increased audience for a not normally popular event. Which the BBC etc will twist into widespread approval.

I realise it's a bit late in the day but was wondering if we witches could cook up some kind of 'why I'm switching off for women' message for Monday. Not with a focus on Hubbard with a focus on who has been displaced. #I stand with....
Then it could be posted in aibu as a woman positive thread (I apologise in advance that I'm not brave enough to do it but I have poor mental health and aibu is the real viper pit)

I was also wondering if this already exists as a message as I'm not on twitter so could have missed an obvious one.

Just watched the heats for women's 200m. BBC commentator mentioned two runners were competing in this event because they couldn't compete in their usual 400 m because they were over the testosterone limit. He went on to explain that the DSD rules meant that there are different limits for different events.

It was two Namibian runners and there was also least one other (Dutee Chand)

It looks like change .com have caved again and taken down the petition despite 30k signatures.

It’s bringing lots of sunlight though - whenever anyone ask me if I’ve watched any olympics I just say ‘oh I’m not really watching it this year because I don’t really like them letting some men compete in some of the women’s events’ - discussion follows, people are shocked.

Good thinking @Sobeyondthehills

FluffyBattleKitten · 02/08/2021 09:05

@Sobeyondthehills

Sorry to jump in, but it might be worth holding off on the Commonwealth games for now, rumours are tha there is going to be an announcement after the games regarding transgender people and how they compete, they couldn't/wouldn't do it during the games because it would be unfair.

Nothing to say what is in it, just that they are going to do an announcement

If I were a betting woman I'd say it'd be a word salad ending twaw. But the doubling down has made me cynical...

Very good discussion on this on BBC Radio 5 Live just now. Sports writer from The Guardian in particular making the point very strongly about permanent effects of male puberty on the body.

starts at 1047

Mrsjamin · 02/08/2021 11:43

The BBC aren't even going to show the event, are they? Because to show it would be shedding light on how unfair it is.

PamDenick · 02/08/2021 11:53

Wow! Well done The Guardian. They usually hate women...

plodalong12 · 02/08/2021 11:54

What channel will it be on does anyone know? Any of the Sky channels if not BBC?

Severncity · 02/08/2021 11:55

Eurosport 2 are showing the weightlifting.

BoreOfWhabylon · 02/08/2021 11:59

I don't know if they'll show it live - to be fair there are a lot of crowd-pleaser events on at the same time - but they are certainly discussing it.

In the 200 m semi-finals both Namibian runners have qualified for the finals, despite being inexperienced in the use of blocks. There was also a Nigerian DSD runner who didn't qualify. All three appear very obviously male.

Radio 5 Live just discussing Hubbard again. They are setting out the details very clearly.

plodalong12 · 02/08/2021 12:00

Thank you, just switched over
Saltovinegar · 02/08/2021 12:02

I'd normally watch it but having seen the athletes introduced my blood pressure has risen. Just seeing the ages of all the woman against LH's age is infuriating.

Mrsjamin · 02/08/2021 12:04

I just watched the intro too. Laurel is so old and male compared to the others! A brit is up against Laurel - apparently very supportive of Laurel's right to be there but let's see how the competition plays out.

BoreOfWhabylon · 02/08/2021 12:05

I don't have eurosport Sad

Jaysmith71 · 02/08/2021 12:06

You can watch Eurosport on Sky, on the Eurosport Player or on Discovery Plus which offeres a free trial.

And, that won't boost BBC / Sky etc figures!

BoreOfWhabylon · 02/08/2021 12:27

Just signed up for Discovery Smile

50ShadesOfCatholic · 02/08/2021 12:29

I'm watching right now.

I think it's super important that as many people as possible watch and see for themselves what is going on.

50ShadesOfCatholic · 02/08/2021 12:31

GB doing so well! And she has the Union Jack nails and everything

amateursleuth · 02/08/2021 12:48

Hubbard out. No successful lifts from three attempts. One was disqualified.

50ShadesOfCatholic · 02/08/2021 12:51

Fascinating to watch. Never imagined I'd be interested in women's weightlifting but wow those amazing young women have blown my mind. I am actually feeling grateful to Hubbard for drawing attention to the sport.
BoreOfWhabylon · 02/08/2021 13:03

Hubbard's out. Good. Thin end of wedge though.

FluffyBattleKitten · 02/08/2021 13:39

Deliberately thrown imo. Very convenient just in time for the message at the end which will conclude transwomen have no physical advantage.
Can't believe a talented woman missed out for that shit show.
