Every so often, the trans issue is raised on AIBU and the thread contains a poll. Then the thread gets moved over here to the naughty corner, the poll disappears and we never get to see the statistics for what the wider Mumsnet population thinks about the issue. We can then be told by TRAs that our views are very much the minority without being able to contradict them.

So I thought that I would record the results of this AIBU poll (specifically on the subject of Laurel Hubbard) for posterity. Just in case it gets moved.

If any of you are unable to see the attachment, 1,978 Mumsnet users voted, with 98% taking the view that a male should not be competing against women.

Yes, I've just seen that, and that is a staggering result along with the comments. Made me feel quite light headed

Well done saving the screenshot OP.

Incidentally the new mixed relays are providing a marvellous illustration of why it is unfair to have men competing in women's sport. Imagine if either of these illustrious male swimmers decided they were female!

I do hope the BBC sees that screenshot op. They might want to consider where they should be on this subject given that they appear to have a very one sided view on the matter.

I pointed out in a survey (run by the BBC) that it is not the duty of a public service broadcaster to lead opinion. It is their duty to reflect the majority opinion. They are clearly not anywhere near

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind · 01/08/2021 12:01

Wow, it didn't really need illustrating did it but that picture says all that needs to be said.

Men do not belong in women's sports. 'Feelings' are not an equation in this matter.

Articus · 01/08/2021 12:26

You can add my vote to the 98%

AnyOldPrion · 01/08/2021 12:26

Before they’re moved, most of these polls show that the vast majority of women on Mumsnet are gender critical. Presumably that’s one of the reasons Mumsnet are pressured so heavily into moving them here.

This is an excellent article on why the US came in 5th

A couple of posters on that thread insinuated that the voting must be broken as, no matter how much the number of votes went up, the percentages stayed the same. One even tagged MNHQ to ask for the tally of votes by numbers.

Some people REALLY don’t like this subject being given a wider audience. Typical that first reply on that thread was along the lines of “go away and post in your own area”.

For me, the best thing about that thread was the tone, language and non-arguments that were used by a few people. Really highlighted how little they bring to the discussion.

I’m amazed, but very glad, that the thread has remained in AIBU.

TooWicked · 01/08/2021 12:46

I’m glad that thread has stayed in AIBU, and why shouldn’t it, as it is actually an AIBU.

Funnily enough I’ve noticed that MN are happy to leave threads in AIBU that don’t have an AIBU in them, they don’t get moved over to chat or parenting or weaning or whatever the relevant topic.

Just the sex and gender threads that get moved about.

"No exceptions", as Stonewall says.

A 'lesbian' (who seems to draw out the 'inner lesbian' in heterosexual women) member of Stonewall's Trans Advisory Committee has already generously 'widened the bandwidth of how to be a woman' by accentuating their masculine features.

(That's the same Trans Advisory Committee from which another member invited women to 'suck my formaldehyde pickled balls'...and that 'advises' many of our employers).

Floisme · 01/08/2021 13:12

I'm sure MNHQ must have been under relentless pressure to move that thread out of AIBU so fair play to them (if you'll excuse the pun) for resisting.

Waitwhat23 · 01/08/2021 13:35

From the comments, there seems to be a few posters who are starting to look at this board in a more positive way and are interested in finding out more.

It also must have been blindingly obvious to anyone new to the conversation, or lurkers, or wavering, the difference in the calibre of the arguments. On the one side, considered reasoned discussion with links, evidence and research. On the other, 'you meanies! You're just bigots'.

AlfonsoTheMango · 01/08/2021 13:41

That's exactly why they want us kept in our box in FWR. They don't want people to hear what we have to say, instead of what TRAs say we say.

I don't quite see how it has been stuck at 98%, for so long. So few posters seem to think YABU, and the total number voting has increased dramatically, and yet still the same % split. From a statistical perspective, odd.

NecessaryScene · 01/08/2021 17:29

Actually, not really, right at an end of the scale.

To shift to 99% would mean having half the relative number of yeses - doubling the nos while receiving no more yeses at all.

To shift to 97% would mean having 50% more yeses. Quite a new surge of opposing votes. Likely only if a new voting group dragged in.

You see what I mean? A one percentage point change at that end of the scale is a 50% change in proportion.

In the middle of the scale, a one percentage point change is a much smaller proportion change.

Not really.

2% of 1978 votes is 39 votes for YABU.

2% of 2133 votes is 43 votes for YABU.

Only 4 extra votes for YABU, outweighed by the 155 more votes for YANBU.

I didn't see the original poll but you can add me to the 98% too!

SpringCrocus · 01/08/2021 18:10

It was at 98% when there were only a few hundred votes, though.

NecessaryScene · 01/08/2021 18:35

Yes, and I'd kind have expected to see a teeny bit of movement early on, but it really can't move that much from just random effects.

If it was 50% at 200 (100:100), then having the next 200 votes be a bit more one way - getting 20% more nos on top, so (100:120) - leaves you at 200:240, so 45% overall. A 5 percentage point shift occurs from 20% change in one of the vote totals.

But if it's 98% at 200 (196:4), then having the next 200 votes be a bit more one way doesn't change much. 20% more nos gives you 196:5, leaving you at 392:9, or 97.8%. 20% more yeses gives you 235:4, leaving you at 431:8, or 98.1%. A 20% change in either vote takes you nowhere. You'd need a big change in proportions.
