Green Party Elections - Candidates who know what sex is

For any of you eligible to vote in the upcoming GP elections I've been passed a list of recommended candidates from a trustworthy source.

It's important to vote for only one candidate then add RON to that candidate's name. This means Re-open Nominations so stops a vote inadvertently going to the 2nd nominee once proportional representation is applied.

GC candidates to support are:

Equality and Diversity Co-ordinator - Rashid Nix and Dzaier Neil (jobsharing)

Internal Communications Co-ordinator - Zoe Hatch

Local Party Support Co-ordinator - Taymar Pitman

Publications Co-ordinator - Julia Lagoutte

Don't forget to put RON after you vote and feel free to share this list with other GP members.
@PumpkinSpiceWoman "good riddance??" Why the aggression? Have I invited this somehow? Why would you think I would vote UKIP?
Ignore. PSW specialises in embarrassingly juvenile one-liner plops like that one.
Asking reasonable questions will get you nowhere.

Doughnut100 · 01/08/2021 20:09

😂 thanks for the heads up.

Re bumping also to remind myself!

Bumping for newbies

Thanks WeAreWomen. I’ve just joined and am not familiar with how the voting system works, so that’s really helpful.

LizzieSiddal · 25/08/2021 08:54

Does anyone know if ww will be sent a voting paper or is it done online?

PaleGreenGhost · 25/08/2021 09:31

Thanks for the advice. Also wondering how to vote?

TheGoogleMum · 25/08/2021 09:47

Are people joining now too late to vote for executive commitee? I joined recently and have had no vote invite. I joined for the leadership vote but figure since I'm in if I can vote in the other one I will!

Helmetbymidnight · 25/08/2021 10:39

Also waiting to vote -

GreenandCommon · 25/08/2021 13:46

I think new joins aren't eligible for the GPEx vote.

You get sent an email link to vote. I think you would have to request if you needed a paper vote.

GreenGretel · 25/08/2021 13:56

To vote in these elections for the executive committee you needed to be registered as a member by 27th July.

The election for a new leader runs for 3 weeks in September - and to vote in that you need to have been registered as a member by this Friday 27th Aug.

There are a number of candidates standing for leader who know what a woman is, and 2000 people have joined in the last month - many women looking for a political home. You can join the party for as little as £3.33 here: join.greenparty.org.uk/

And to stay in touch with other Green Feminists who know that sex matters drop a line to [email protected] and follow on Twitter @GreenFemsUK

Helmetbymidnight · 25/08/2021 14:56

Thanks Gretel, you're doing a great job.

LizzieSiddal · 25/08/2021 19:20

Thank you for the explanation Gretel

WarriorN · 25/08/2021 19:32

@LizzieSiddal

Does anyone know if ww will be sent a voting paper or is it done online?
All the ones I've done were online
GreenGretel · 01/09/2021 21:14

Voting in Green Party leadership election opens 10am Thursday 2nd Sept and closes 10pm on 23rd September. Voting recommendations just received from [email protected]

These are our voting recommendations. Explanatory notes follow.

To vote ONLY for candidates who will defend sex-based rights:

 1. Shahrar Ali
 2. Martin Hemingway and Tina Rothery
 3. RON (Re-Open Nominations)

To vote to defend women's sex-based rights AND have a say in any run-off between other candidates

 1. Shahrar Ali
 2. Martin Hemingway and Tina Rothery
 3. Ashley Gunstock
 4. Carla Denyer and Adrian Ramsay
 5. RON (Re-Open Nominations)

Our analysis of the election
This election uses Single Transferable Vote in which you are asked to rank each candidate/s in order of preference. The counting of the votes involves several rounds. After each round the lowest-scoring candidate/s is eliminated and their voters' preferences re-distributed to the remaining candidates until only one, the winner, remains. We have offered two voting suggestions: the first prioritising only those candidates who we believe will defend women's existing legal sex-based rights; the second allows you a say between other candidates if your top preferences were to get knocked out in earlier rounds.

Please note, you DO NOT have to cast all six votes and Re-Open Nominations can be used if you don't like any other candidates.

Our suggestions address only the question of whether the candidates' recent actions and words indicate an understanding of the importance of sex in the life chances of women and girls - and of the implications if 'sex' is replaced in all situations by a concept of 'gender identity', as some propose. You should weigh this with your other priorities.

Getting your vote
You will receive an email from the Green Party on Thursday 2nd September with a unique code and link to the online ballot. If you don't receive a voting link, contact [email protected] to obtain a voting code.

herewegogc · 02/09/2021 15:32

Received the link this morning and went for option 1 above

lionheart · 02/09/2021 17:35

Thank you for starting this thread and for the explanations.

I've completed mine.

EyesOpening · 02/09/2021 22:00

Thank you GreenGretel.
I haven't quite got my head around the voting system yet: you mentioned the rounds and the votes being redistributed but do we only get to vote the one time? Any further clarification would be most appreciated, thanks.

NecessaryScene · 03/09/2021 06:21

I haven't quite got my head around the voting system yet: you mentioned the rounds and the votes being redistributed but do we only get to vote the one time?

You submit your preference order once.

The counting has rounds, and your preference order is used to express your vote in each round.

In each round, your vote is counted for your highest-ranked candidate still remaining. It's as if you were there voting in multiple rounds.

Once your first choice is eliminated - and only then - your vote goes to your second choice (if they're still in).

Listing second-choice or later candidates cannot hurt your first choice.

Listing all candidates (or equivalently all but one) guarantees you vote in every round.

I don't know if there is special handling of RON. Maybe there is. I would have thought it made sense to rank 3. RON, 4. Gunstock, 5. Denyer+Ramsey, but maybe they've got a special rule to discourage use of RON - can't rank people below it?

(Didn't manage to join the Greens, so not seen their detailed rules - I just know about voting systems...)

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 03/09/2021 08:20

Voted. Thanks, GreenGretel.

pollypocketlover · 06/09/2021 18:54

Dammint I voted wrong Sad

I voted Shahrar Ali in first place but I thought you had to give every candidate a number so I gave Tasmin Osmond the last number.

@GreenGretel , do you know how much this will affect scores if lots of people have made the same mistake I have? I hate to think that I've bumped up an anti-woman candidate.

NecessaryScene · 06/09/2021 18:57

I voted Shahrar Ali in first place but I thought you had to give every candidate a number so I gave Tasmin Osmond the last number.

It doesn't make any difference you write in your last choice or not. They're never going to get your vote. They're your sixth choice either way, and you'll always be voting against them.
