Oh ffs..."people with uteruses"

Downloaded Flo period app after Clue went all "people who menstruate", as they seemed reasonably sensible; but today got a popup notification from them letting me know that "70% of people with uteruses get uterine fibroids" FFS.

So fricking sick of this total bollocks rubbish.

The wording gives credence to the idea that a woman means something other than adult human female and girl means something other than juvenile human female.

I accept that words have multiple meanings for different people, but I don't accept that the word 'woman' can't be used to refer simply to sex and nothing else.

@EdgeOfACoin

I can live with that.

As long as the word woman is still included, I can live with it

It’s when it’s completely erased and “people who menstruate” replaces it, is when it angers me

I still don't like it. The wording gives credence to the idea that a woman means something other than adult human female and girl means something other than juvenile human female.

Still, I suspect I'm on the losing side of this argument.

I agree with you. Woman is enough.

Saturday Telegraph, article on page 3 i.e., not hidden away, on proposed pregnant 'man' emoji. Thought great this will bring the ridiculous/vile boll..ks we are suffering to people's attention ...... and yes it will but read it and just coverage on why and nothing on why not and just no and f..k off.

Just noticed this on twitter:

twitter.com/i/events/1416186845298319369

It starts off so well "the first at-home vaginal microbiome test for women with recurring infections and even infertility" but soon moves on to "people with vaginas".

IsItShining · 18/07/2021 13:08

‘…the first at-home vaginal microbiome test that can tell people with vaginas what may be causing a host of vaginal issues and recommend what to do about it.’

The weird thing there is that they could just have missed out the vaginaed people but and gone with
‘ the first at-home vaginal microbiome test that can tell you what may be causing a host of vaginal issues and recommend what to do about it’
Or
‘ the first at-home vaginal microbiome test that can indicate what may be causing a host of vaginal issues and recommend what to do about it.’

When the average reading age in the UK is nine, using anything but man and woman is just unforgivable.
Especially if it's menstrual or fertility apps which have medical relevance.
Warmly undergraduate virtue signalling that harms real people.

There's no excuse for promoting misleading or difficult language. None at all.
I don't care how inclusive you want to seem. Of people really cared about inclusion they should donate their time and brains to worthy causes that actually takes time and effort.

@krystalweedon

I am still getting to grips with some of this, but I don't understand what is wrong with saying "women and people who menstruate". That covers it all - women who menstruate and trans men who menstruate. I am a woman who doesn't menstruate because I am old, I am not offended to be reminded of that fact.
@krystalweedon when I have nicely suggested that, TRAs have always come back with that it excludes and ‘others’ all the non women and why would you do that except to show hate when pregnant people literally includes everyone relevant? Never mind it helps no one understand better who the majority target audience of potentially pregnant people are ie women.

I use the 'WOOM' app to track my periods, it is made by women for women!

" FROM OUR OWN EXPERIENCE AS WOMEN
At WOOM, we combine machine learning techniques with our professional experience in technology and our personal experience as women. The result: apps that allow us women to better understand and know how our bodies work.

WOOM covers every stage of women’s reproductive health. We accompany you with customized period and fertility calendars, as well as other tools supported by medical professionals, all the while prioritizing your emotional well-being."

it so enraging that it's often well-meaning but quite young women who are driving and enforcing these linguistic changes -- without any appreciation of just how much they are colluding with some of the most timeless misogyny about what women are thought and represented to be.
These and your other comments hit the nail on the head for me. I find this aspect the most depressing. I know it is a long-standing issue, from young women I knew in the '80s who were in roles only open to them by the action of feminists yet refusing to even acknowledge the fact and were anti- women's rights, to women who believed that if a man hit you it showed he cared... it's so frustrating when you see who is helping throw women's rights under the bus!

If their product is not for post-surgery transwomen with neovaginas (inverted penises) they need to make that clear, I think. The biome of flora in a neovagina will be nothing like that in a woman's vagina. I understand that constant effort is needed to keep the neovagina clean and smelling fresh and there is always a risk of necrosis (tissue dying). 😨

As for man/woman male/female no longer being the default terms, the fact that a mere 5% of users don't identify as women suggests they very much still are the default!

If 95% are using them, that's default enough for me.

"Menstruators" is inaccurate because even women who have periods aren't having them permanently, are they?! If a woman lives to be 85 having her first period at 15 and her last at 50, that's less than 400 weeks or just about 4 years actually spent menstruating. Less if she has a couple of pregnancies or more.

95% or more of that woman's life is menstruation-free. Deep joy! Don't call us menstruators.
