Oh ffs..."people with uteruses"

irresistibleoverwhelm · 17/07/2021 21:31

Downloaded Flo period app after Clue went all "people who menstruate", as they seemed reasonably sensible; but today got a popup notification from them letting me know that "70% of people with uteruses get uterine fibroids" FFS.

So fricking sick of this total bollocks rubbish.

How do you explain to girls that they will start to menstruate, without using the word ‘girls’?

‘Right, young people-who-will-potentially-menstruate, you come into the hall to watch PHSE Video 1, while the people-who-will-not-ever-menstruate stay in the classroom and watch Video 2.
Jessie, what do you mean, you don’t know which room to be in?’

saleorbouy · 17/07/2021 23:02

The majority have to change their titles for the tiny minority who choose to change their gender. As 'a person with a penis'I understand your frustration its getting a bit OTT now in the media.

BessieWallisWarfield · 17/07/2021 23:03

Ah, I don't menstruate any more but I do cycle to work. Great - I'm included!

(Pretty sure there is a Victoria Wood sketch about this - something to do with cycle clips....)

Novelusername · 17/07/2021 23:17

Thanks for letting us know about this. I was using Flo and have just deleted it. It was incredibly patronising anyway, and they're probably using my data for god knows what, so I can manage perfectly well without as it's really just a calendar. I'll leave it for those happy to be called 'people with uteruses'. Doesn't it sound like a form of masochism, women who approve and try to enforce all this stuff? It seems like they think this is their path to some sort of salvation, that women will no longer be bottom of the heap if we just pretend women don't really exist. Poor cows.

Novelusername · 17/07/2021 23:24

It's strange that they repeatedly use the word 'women' on their Instagram page but not in the app: www.instagram.com/flotracker/

Runningupthecurtains · 17/07/2021 23:36

I hate being referred to by body parts and biological functions. As a woman with fertility issues it's such a kick in the teeth to constantly be reminded that my female body repeatedly failed to carry out the function it was designed for. It is so degrading.

Megasausagehead · 18/07/2021 00:04

Is nobody allowed to just feel proud or comfortable to be a woman/mother anymore. Now we are reduced to organs and functions.

NewlyGranny · 18/07/2021 00:07

The plural of uterus is uteri anyway, surely? (Gets point but gets easily distracted by etymology, too)

NewlyGranny · 18/07/2021 00:08

The world is divided by the woke into men and non-men, so we don't need the word women any more, clearly.

alkanet · 18/07/2021 00:11

It does make me feel like the next step is to refer to us as bleeders. Or just go the whole 9 yards...c#@*s.

MingeofDeath · 18/07/2021 00:39

@littlbrowndog
That's a very good point you make about not seeing this shite on telly. It's like advertisements are made with their target customers in mind.
I dont understand organisations who keep pushing this crap because it goes down so badly with people, just look at the ratios on Twitter when the latest bit of woke guff is spouted. The public dont want it shoved down their throats and frankly are sick to the death of it all

DaisiesandButtercups · 18/07/2021 00:44

Speaking of etymology

How long ago was it that the Romans were running things in the British Isles? What is it that makes Latin derived terminology acceptable but Anglo-Saxon derived terminology taboo?

Latin femina was wyf or wyfman in old English I believe and obviously woman now.

Feminine is Latin for womanly.

I don’t get why female is being used more and more likely to be deemed ok but not woman. Particularly as female doesn’t give us as much information as woman.

Woman tells us species, sex and maturity. Female refers only to sex.

These threads come up quite often, I like the FitrWoman app. I haven’t noticed any dehumanising language from them yet… they also have great recipes and information.

I heard it said on GB news the other day that if you were a misogynist and hated women, these terms referring to women as body parts and biological functions are exactly the terms you’d come up with.

DaisiesandButtercups · 18/07/2021 00:49

I think that you have a point here either we’ll go with the Latin penis people and vulva people or the Anglo-Saxon cunts and cocks. Personally I would rather stick with men and women. I don’t think that we’ll get by for long without needing words to refer to men and women in the traditional meanings of those words. It all seems a bit pointless changing the language, it doesn’t actually change material reality whatever Judith Butler would have us believe.
Danikm151 · 18/07/2021 01:21

It pisses me off so much.
The suffragettes had to fight years and years for votes for WOMEN.
Now we are being told that we aren’t women due to our reproductive organs only so as not to offend a small minority who have feel that they aren’t female but still want the ability to give birth. If they choose to do that fine, but don’t take away every other woman’s identity.

Will Shania Twain’s song be changed to Man, I feel like a person who menstruates?

DivaEx · 18/07/2021 03:28

I started using Flo because of the Clue's app's 'inclusive' language. Will unsubscribe with a message as to why.

DivaEx · 18/07/2021 03:31

At least their website is not eliminating the word 'woman' entirely:

At Flo, we aim to improve the health and wellbeing of every girl, woman, and person who menstruates worldwide.

person78 · 18/07/2021 04:45

The Vagina Museum's Twitter account tells us: "Instead of 'women's health', say 'reproductive health' or 'gynaecological health' (whatever you prefer)"

I suppose they don't know that the prefix "gyn" is Greek for "woman." Hmm

Cazzovuoi · 18/07/2021 05:16

It give me rage.

I take screenshots wherever I see dehumanising language or sex and gender conflated so I can email the company. This doozy is from Google.

Cazzovuoi · 18/07/2021 05:16

Would help if the photo attached properly…

Oh ffs..."people with uteruses"
DaisiesandButtercups · 18/07/2021 06:38

Exactly person78

What are they going to call gynaecology when they figure it out? Uterology? Even though it isn’t only about the uterus. In this brave new world where women are reduced to body parts and bodily processes it is likely to be the way it goes.

Maternity has become perinatal focusing on the process now instead of the woman becoming a mother.

And I suppose the word midwife will have to go too at some point as the “wife” bit is the old word for woman as previously mentioned. What will it be? Qualified Birth Attendant? Focusing on the process of birth again rather than the woman to whom the process belongs.

I can live with that.

As long as the word woman is still included, I can live with it

It’s when it’s completely erased and “people who menstruate” replaces it, is when it angers me

Abhannmor · 18/07/2021 06:57
We know we aren't seeing similar calls to nuance language around men

Yes, out of curiosity I looked at the Prostate Cancer Charity website. No mention of "people" there, just men.

prostatecanceruk.org/prostate-information/are-you-at-risk/
But that is coming , at least in Ireland - the new leaflets with reference to people with prostates

merrymouse · 18/07/2021 08:05

www.cgdev.org/sites/default/files/gender-social-protection-during-covid.pdf

This seems to be quite important, but who does it refer to? Does it exclude people who don't identify with the gender 'woman', whether that is because they are trans men, non-binary or reject the concept of gender identity?

It mentions sex desegregated data on page 19, so I think they are including people who don't believe they have a feminine gender identity, but who knows?

I genuinely don't know how you collect this data if references to sex are taboo.

EdgeOfACoin · 18/07/2021 08:08

I still don't like it. The wording gives credence to the idea that a woman means something other than adult human female and girl means something other than juvenile human female.

Still, I suspect I'm on the losing side of this argument.
