I don't watch drag race but I saw it mentioned elsewhere and had a google and its true

uk.news.yahoo.com/drag-race-star-keria-c-135126278.html

"She continued: “But now I have re-transitioned to living my life as a guy.

“But as you know, I had my body done so the bottom half of me is very feminine shaped.

“It’s that ass almighty, girl. Some people are infatuated by it, but they’re not sexually attracted to it.”

Drag Race All Stars 6 didn’t air A’keria’s full story

A’keria, who first appeared on Drag Race season 11, elaborated on Twitter, telling fans All Stars “didn’t air all” of the conversation about Kiki.

She explained “part of the reason” she thought she was trans is because she was “trying to fill [a] void of being love and accepted”.

“I would always get a false sense of love when I was on stage, and the children lived for A’keria so I thought maybe if I keep A’keria on I would constantly hear the applause and I would keep feeling ‘loved or wanted’,” she wrote."

Another rôle-model bites the dust. I wonder why they didn't air all of the conversation?

GNCQ · 17/07/2021 04:22

It's interesting when you listen to detransitioners and their journey, how there is such a myriad of reasons as to why someone would want to try to present as the opposite sex.

"Gender dysphoria" is given as a reason with almost no analysis in most cases.

Therapists really need to catch up with delving into exactly why someone might feel a sex/gender mismatch rather than ushering everyone onto the $$ affirmative medical intervention path.

JellySlice · 17/07/2021 05:18

But now I have re-transitioned to living my life as a guy.

So why is male, this self-declared guy, being referred to by feminine pronouns?

fibeee · 17/07/2021 05:48

PP - the queens on DR typically refer to each other by their drag character names rather than first names. And they also use feminine pronouns for their character.

EdgeOfACoin · 17/07/2021 05:50

Slightly off topic, but there's an interesting AMA by a detransitioner in the correct place on Mumsnet.

As for the present thread:

So why is male, this self-declared guy, being referred to by feminine pronouns?
Good question... Maybe it goes against the prevailing narrative and the media is struggling with how to report it?

BraveBananaBadge · 17/07/2021 07:26

I was really interested to hear A'Keria say this. She (speaking in the drag character) made a passing comment as to surgery as well.

What is never brought up is that Eureka is also detrans. He spoke on a BBC radio documentary a while back about it as one of several people to feature. It seemed to totally fly under the radar.

With two now trans contestants on All Stars too it's interesting to see how the modern drag scene is reflected in the line up.

BraveBananaBadge · 17/07/2021 07:33

Sorry I've just properly read the additional comments from A'Keria. I like him. He comes across well and hope he's happy, but what a lot to have gone through so young. In the States it must have cost a hell of a lot as well, you can see how the medicalised pathway is all about the dollar.

I was thinking that too?
orangejuicer · 17/07/2021 07:42

Drag queens refer to their drag personas generally as she, or she for the benefit of the programme.

They do refer to their male selves quite frequently.

Valeriekat · 17/07/2021 07:51

Yes in costume they are "she". Interestingly most of the queens on this (I find disarmingly charming) show are gay men with their female alter ego.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 17/07/2021 08:00

It’s confusing! I read an article about an actor (who I later realised is ‘they’). They do this and they think that...

Absolutely.

Oh lord, now I’m terminally confused. Can women be drag queens? While he was transitioned, was he a drag queen or a drag king?

Because drag queens are always referred to as 'she'.
BraveBananaBadge · 17/07/2021 08:13

There is such a thing as female drag queens ('bio queens'), afaik they have a bit of a hard time breaking through and being accepted on the scene.

They certainly wouldn't be allowed to compete on Drag Race at this point for example, although they never used to let out trans women on either.

whistlers · 17/07/2021 08:15

Gottmik is a biological female, has 'transitioned' to a man, and is a 'man' who does drag.

So gottmik in drag is called 'she' and out of drag is called 'he'.

I'm surprised that's not cited as literal violence

BraveBananaBadge · 17/07/2021 08:15

Although what the arguable difference between a bio queen and any overly made up cabaret/ burlesque act would be, I couldn't really tell you Grin

Theses a trans man who is a drag Queen. It’s all just cartoon performance - just drop the sex/gender and get on with it.
JellySlice · 17/07/2021 08:19

Because drag queens are always referred to as 'she'.

Why?

He's talking about how his previous choices affect his life as a man, not as a drag artiste.

whistlers · 17/07/2021 08:19

RuPaul seems to have bent to the pressure. He's changed catchphrases a couple of times:

One from 'You got she-Mail' to 'she done already done had herses'

One from 'gentleman, start your engines and may the best woman win!' To 'racers start your engines and may the best drag queen win'

The amount of time it's taken to RuPaul to bend however does make me think that he thinks it's all bollocks. He knows he's a man, and proud of it.

It's a non-issue
2Rebecca · 17/07/2021 08:33

If drag stops being male bodied people impersonating women then it becomes a different type of entertainment. Males with modified bodies to look more feminine on oestrogen and people born female dressing up as women does seem to be changing what drag is. The contrast between the normal persona and drag persona is part of it. If I put on a fancy frock and lip sync it's not the same.

I haven't watched drag race but I always liked Ru Paul before all of that. I don't believe for a second he buys into the trans stuff. He couldn't, he of all people is so aware of what it all actually is.
JellySlice · 17/07/2021 08:40

It perpetuates the myth that performing a stereotype makes you a woman.

Referring to the character as 'she' - fair enough. "Widow Twanky is angry at her son, she wants Aladdin to help." But he's not referring to his drag character. He is referring to his sexed reality.

Language matters.

It would seem that RuPaul understands this.

Yes he's definitely got his feet in reality. He's just had to move with the times unfortunately. Annoying because I would have preferred for the production company to just ride the storm but I suppose they've gone for the easier route.
