Akeira from Rupauls Drag Race has come out as detrans

I don't watch drag race but I saw it mentioned elsewhere and had a google and its true

uk.news.yahoo.com/drag-race-star-keria-c-135126278.html

"She continued: “But now I have re-transitioned to living my life as a guy.

“But as you know, I had my body done so the bottom half of me is very feminine shaped.

“It’s that ass almighty, girl. Some people are infatuated by it, but they’re not sexually attracted to it.”

Drag Race All Stars 6 didn’t air A’keria’s full story

A’keria, who first appeared on Drag Race season 11, elaborated on Twitter, telling fans All Stars “didn’t air all” of the conversation about Kiki.

She explained “part of the reason” she thought she was trans is because she was “trying to fill [a] void of being love and accepted”.

“I would always get a false sense of love when I was on stage, and the children lived for A’keria so I thought maybe if I keep A’keria on I would constantly hear the applause and I would keep feeling ‘loved or wanted’,” she wrote."

Drag Race has been forced to change with the times a bit with the generational shift. Eg 'She-male' evolved from being a campy pun to a slur, some contestants voiced their unhappiness with it for a while before it changed. (There was a joke in Arrested Development about it that wouldn't fly now, iirc)

But RuPaul definitely knows what's what.

Despite the fact that I find drag race offensive, I also find it very entertaining.

I'm a baaad feminist!

But, it's mainly because rupaul and Ross and Carson et al all know what a man is.

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 17/07/2021 09:10

I like Rupaul a lot, and I really don’t think its fair that the show allowed transwomen (who may have started down the hormone and surgery route) to complete

I don’t watch the show much but ds1 and partner watch it when they are here and rewatch some, dd enjoys it as well

I’m glad that Akeria is being allowed to talk about detransitioning while on the show…brave of Akeria and the show at this point in time

I suppose it's fair their competed. The transwomen that have competed never really won anything.

Gia Gunn was an awful character and you can see rupaul running out of patience with him

I don’t think so

If its all transwomen are women then this is another example of ‘ except when its suits someone’

Pre transition I’d have less of an issue, but after hormones, facial feminisation and boob creating surgery I honestly don’t think its fair

And if they don’t generally win .( because of transitioning do you think?)…then that’s not fair either

I feel like im whining 😀 ive got a real tone in my typing 😀

Thats what i enjoy (when its on the telly) the transformation of the makeup

My dad was very confused the other day when he came round and it was on the telly…kept thinking random queens were women, it was the very good fake boobs which threw him

Somethingvague · 17/07/2021 09:25

Yes Eureka is also detrans. Interesting interview with them here:

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 17/07/2021 09:25

Actually I wouldn’t have any issue pre transition

AngelicInnocent · 17/07/2021 09:57

RuPaul definitely did not want transwomen on drag race but came under quite a bit of pressure after he said so.

I'm not sure how I feel about it as quite a lot of the queens have had plastic surgery to improve their looks for their act despite being firmly male.

Plastic surgery is fine I suppose but RuPaul wanted to draw a line. Unfortunately that line has been blurred!

That's a really interesting interview, thanks.

Their experience as men (who admittedly live a very 'gender fluid' life anyway) is so markedly different to female detransitioners. The language around it varies too ('retransing')

Not that it's any of my or anyone's else's business of course but can't help wondering what impact surgery has had on A'Kiera (if indeed she was referencing full surgery rather than say bum implants or something). It really isn't often these days you get to hear about anyone taking it that far.

Some men improve their looks with surgery but i think most gay men still want to look like a man…just a very pretty one 😀

FrogWaa · 17/07/2021 10:52

I don't understand how it's not transphobic to have trans women be drag queens. Stonewall should be livid with the idea.

Unless 'cis' women are allowed on and I've missed that?

BatmansBat · 17/07/2021 11:00

Maybe I am thick here, but why aren’t biological women allowed?

We are constantly told that TWAW and that they should have access to every single safe space for biological women, including prisons and sports. The should welcome biological women into this. I am a sure biological women could do an amazing job with the costumes.

Maybe even win? As opposed to in sports.

They are. Gottmik won recently.
estornudar · 17/07/2021 11:37

Rumour has it that Victoria Scone (biological woman) is participating in UK Season 3.

CardinalLolzy · 17/07/2021 12:52

Interesting, thanks. Hope they are happy however they identify themselves. I find the line between drag and trans woman difficult to understand in some cases (not all! Not at all saying that one is equated with the other) - presumably it's just that drag is knowingly and deliberately an exaggerated caricature of 'femininity' (not woman-ness) and with TW it's 'real'?

SionnachRua · 17/07/2021 13:15

I don't think A'keria was ever known to be trans by the fandom so it's not a case of an idol biting the dust or whatever. She was male presenting afair on season 11 (and the season running now, I think).

And Gottmik didn't win, Symone did. But Mik was a huge fan favourite so she's done well out of it. It'll be interesting to see if Drag Race brings in bio queens and drag kings over the next few years.

Some drag queens do the pageant look (very stereotypically feminine) but a lot of popular Drag Racers aren't in that lane. Gottmik, Milk, Nina Bonina Brown, Aquaria spring to mind for me. Bit like Ru back in his early days, that certainly wasn't full glamazon mode.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 17/07/2021 14:52

As soon at it becomes a thing that born women who identify as women start competing, it won’t be ‘cool’ anymore.

Never seen or heard of Dragula then, I take it. They have a drag king winner already and the show is still seen as very cool.
toffeebutterpopcorn · 17/07/2021 15:45

Little knows fact - my sister was in a drag show (a king). The kings were just not as popular as the queens.

SionnachRua · 17/07/2021 16:27

There's kings and kings, though. Check out that winner - Landon Cider could hold his own against most queens. I do think that the first king on would have to be exceptional, a bit like how Gottmik had extra expectations to deal with as the first trans man on the show. Or else have DR run a spinoff show for drag kings. But it'll happen at some stage, just maybe not in the next few seasons.
