What are they trying to do here with the photo of ‘Jennie’ and her friend on the bed? Makes me extremely uncomfortable.

That is truly as creepy AF

PrincessNutella · 03/07/2021 05:09

Scaredy is wearing a diaper? Excuse me while I vomit.
Actually just started watching this film by Watson and she nails the issues with this mermaid page within the first 5 mins (it's much longer)
Pronoun Punters made me chuckle 🤭

Sinead is awesome isn't she, so eloquent and hits every nail on every head.

FreeBritnee · 03/07/2021 07:57

I hate to talk out of turn but has she detransitioned and if so from which sex back into which sex? I genuinely couldn’t work it out. I think it was the voice.

Cwenthryth · 03/07/2021 08:12

Sinead (@ImWatson91 on Twitter) is as she says a detransitioned woman. She lived for several years as a transman and had medical treatment to transition, and then desisted. She’s campaigning to support detransitioners and for better care and therapy for young people with gender dysphoria.

BreatheAndFocus · 03/07/2021 08:25

I look at that and see a number of children who would have probably grown up to be gay. This is such old-fashioned crap - and damaging too.

Mermaids IMO are desperate for validation. They hook up with a big commercial sponsor like Starbucks and write drivel like this, then hope Starbucks will repay them by legitimising them.

I never go into a Starbucks now but when I did I never gave them my real name anyway. It’s just cringeworthy. The child here ‘finding out’ their name from a social media poll says it all. Hate yourself, re-invent yourself, get hooked on validation from social media. That’s not being your authentic self at all, is it?

Ghislainedefeligonde · 03/07/2021 08:57

freebritnee if you watch the video Sinead talks about having testosterone injections and double mastectomy. She also mentions that people do often mistake her for a man and that she doesn’t blame them for this or correct them which is very gracious of her. It’s worth watching it all

God that’s just so bloody sad that we’re encouraging our young people to take such drastic steps whilst growing. Things that can’t be undone 😪

I tried to say the same thing on another thread but felt id get massive pushback so didn’t. I too think a lot of these children would have gone in to be gay and found a wonderful community having made that decision. Unfortunately the T is getting them first and before they know it they’re sucked into medication and procedures.
Soontobe60 · 03/07/2021 09:09

I am a 60 year old grandma. I’m going to go to Starbucks as often as I can and tell them my name is Bruce or Frank or some typical male name, then loudly proclaim I’m NB whilst chatting to the staff. I can bet that they won’t be so matey with me and will probably think I’m bonkers. Then I’ll take photos of me with my cup to post on their SM pages.

NonHypotheticalLurkingParent · 03/07/2021 09:42

It’s just a bizarre photo. As it’s in an advertorial puff piece it would’ve been signed off by Starbucks as well as Mermaids. The photo was probably supplied by the family as an example of Jennie enjoying herself as an average 11 year old girl.

It again highlights the lack of safeguarding. Anyone pointing out that this photo wasn’t appropriate would be cast out as a transphobic bigot.

It’s such a shame we can’t talk about this in plain language.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 03/07/2021 09:46

My kid used to dress up as Spider-Man or a power ranger. I didn’t spend loads of my time and efforts (as this child parents must be doing) to expose him to the adult world and manage his costumes.

merrymouse · 03/07/2021 10:03

Agree. There is pressure to be ‘sex positive’, but also to sanitise anything connected with sex.

‘Don’t be a prude, but how dare you imply that there is anything odd about interviewing people in a bathrobe’. It’s the Harvey Weinstein charter.

WarriorN · 03/07/2021 10:29

There's a lot of money to be made in the area of blurring boundaries.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 03/07/2021 10:32

Yup. We’ve seen it all before. Old as time. And they never bloody learn.
