The Guardian covers Hubbard. You'll be surprised

The Guardian says you shouldn't conflate sex and gender and Hubbard's place in the Olympics is unfair. I know, right?

Read it linked on the other thread. It's very good. Has Kath Viner gone on holiday? Or has a GC journo locked her in a cupboard, and started identifying as the editor of the Guardian?

Great!

But wait, wasn't it the Guardian who have been pushing this nonsense for years? Are we finally going to get our apology here?

JoodyBlue · 22/06/2021 18:14

I suspect Maya's result has something to do with this slight change of heart

bellinisurge · 22/06/2021 18:16

I didn't pick it out on the other thread - too much scrolling and getting distracted, sorry.

Still, it's very good, isn't it? Somebody decided to be more courageous today than they were yesterday.

Impressive. Lots of easy to understand statistics. A bit Hmm at There is just no proof that reducing testosterone takes away the advantage of muscle mass, strength, lean body mass, muscle size or bone density. Would have been great to read it as "there IS proof that reducing testosterone DOESN'T..." but for the Guardian it's more than I'd ever normally hope for.

Faffertea · 22/06/2021 18:17

Was just coming here to post this article. I kept waiting for the but…most oppressed, be kind, women should try harder etc and it never came.

Thoroughly disconcerting.

TedImgoingmad · 22/06/2021 18:17

I think following Maya's case, they may have realised they are on the wrong side of history. They have actively suppressed women's voices, both in print and in the work environment, and seen the exit of a renowned and popular journalist, Suzanne Moore, based on complaints from someone who had already resigned their position.

But ultimately, yes, sport is the paramount area of focus coming up to the Olympics. Forget women raped by Karen White, what if one of our sporting heroes doesn't get a medal, and it's because of a trans woman, and we (the Guardian) never said a thing? How angry will our readers be? How foolish will we look? It's damage limitation, but too little too late, as they have already supported the societal environment that has allowed this to happen. The Guardian is complicit, and a couple of GC articles about sport won't change that.

stumbledin · 22/06/2021 18:20

I think this is a bit like when they had the writer whose main job was fashion and every now and again she was allowed to write a few gender critical articles. Sorry I am so bad at names Blush - and in fact in thinks she was eased out of her job.

ie in Guardianland sport and fashion are just side issues, in the real world of politics TWAW is still the standard.

334bu · 22/06/2021 18:20

Wow a balanced, fair article in the Guardian.

CatNamedEaster · 22/06/2021 18:20

Totally agree @Wearywithteens. But my hope is that people might read it and think more about other situations that are also impacted. It feels like sport is almost an 'easy' in for the brain cogs to start turning for people who haven't really cared/thought about it much before beyond "be kind."

PaleGreenGhost · 22/06/2021 18:20

@Wearywithteens

It’s interesting to me that the line in the sand is sport. There have been few shits given about changing rooms, toilets, hospital wards, prisons, schools, rape centres and refuges. Vulnerable women and children being told to STFU and deal with it. But when it’s sport, suddenly the unfairness and disparity becomes glaringly obvious. I wonder if the challenge on this will translate?
I really hope it's not just because men watch sport.
TedImgoingmad · 22/06/2021 18:21

I'll also add that GB News is showing up all mainstream media for their one sided, anti-fact/anti-science coverage of this issue.

WotgunShedding · 22/06/2021 18:22

Hadley Freedman, Oliver Burke and Suzanne Moore (although not longer at the guardian) are voices that don’t toe the women’s-rights-are-transphobic line

LadyFuHao · 22/06/2021 18:23

It's definitely because men care about sport.

FrankButchersDickieBow · 22/06/2021 18:26

My flabber is well and truly gasted!!!

CatChant · 22/06/2021 18:27

Intriguing reverse ferret there. I imagine it's provoked a hell of a row in-house when one considers Suzanne Moore's courageous and intelligent gender critical article prompted a petition by 'colleagues' to have her sacked.

I'll be watching developments with interest.

TedImgoingmad · 22/06/2021 18:27

Stumbledin Hadley Freeman. .

Mollyollydolly · 22/06/2021 18:27

It was always going to be sport wasn't it, something men give a shit about. Anyway nice to see a Guardian article without Peter Tatchell quoted in the conclusion for no reason whatsoever.

Sport is an area where Guardian writers' families are more likely to be affected, I suppose. They can shop around for schools and medical care, their workplace loos are self-contained units and there's security on the front door, and they're unlikely to need a refuge or go to prison.
ninetynineAu · 22/06/2021 18:37

A lot of money in sports bets too...

GroggyLegs · 22/06/2021 18:37

But above all, there needs to be a realisation that you can’t always have it all. Just as women and trans men can’t dominate in men’s sports; and men can’t enter women’s sport; trans women shouldn’t be able to push open a door that was locked for a reason. It isn’t fair.

THIS.

bellinisurge · 22/06/2021 18:43

Was expecting some Tatchell shit "for balance " but, no. Nothing. Gobsmacked

OP posts:
copperpotsalot · 22/06/2021 18:46

The Hubbard issue is low hanging fruit isn't it. A man I know who is regularly sexist and chauvinist on social media posted today about how unfair it is on sports women etc etc... like he's ever been bothered before

littlbrowndog · 22/06/2021 18:47

Oh yeah was forgetting the money in sports betting

Bet a few will be taking a punt on Hubbard winning
