For those who can't see the link:

Safe Schools Alliance
@SafeSchools_UK
This is KS1 (ages 5-7) maths from
@JustLikeUsUK
for #SchoolDiversityWeek. What teaching/child development qualifications did the author have? This is political indoctrination & in breach of the 1996 Education Act.
Parents ask to see see resources & complain!

It's just awful and confusing. Verbal reasoning in maths is about picking out the important maths bits not filtering out political statements.

ChakaDakotaRegina · 22/06/2021 02:55

Please tell me this isn’t real and hasn’t actually been used to teach maths to 5-7 year olds?

DdraigGoch · 22/06/2021 05:04

This has got to be a parody.

Stop the Earth, I want to get off!

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 22/06/2021 05:57

This can't be a real maths problem that has been given to children; it looks nothing like any material I've ever used in school during my entire career in teaching. Maths questions are crafted really carefully in ks1 to make sure the operation and quantities involved are signposted clearly. This question is worded in such a fluffy way, you'd have to give it to year 2 (unless you were reading aloud to year 1). However, the maths itself is quite basic, so not year 2 level.
We do teach children to use highlighter pens to select important maths information, though - I guess this could be an example of a question where the maths problem itself is quite oblique and you have to siphon out the info from a lot of extraneous information that isn't important?

ScreamingMeMe · 22/06/2021 07:29

That looks like a parody Shock

Leafstamp · 22/06/2021 07:48

Another example:

aliasundercover · 22/06/2021 07:57

The maths answer is ‘10 bottles’.* If a student wrote ‘she needs to buy 10 bottles’ would they be marked as correct or incorrect?

  • I think. It’s early.
Leafstamp · 22/06/2021 08:23

alias — This has got so ridiculous that I wouldn’t be surprised if they would be marked wrong, or at least a correction made if full marks awarded.

I despair at times.

Childrenofthestones · 22/06/2021 08:34

Even if it's a mock up lets be honest, it's only a matter of time until it's a reality.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 22/06/2021 08:49

I saw that and couldn't quite believ just how unsubtle the indoctrination was!

MrsOvertonsWindow · 22/06/2021 08:57

This is what happens when you give political activists free reign in schools. Indoctrination, a shambolic curriculum with nothing centring the needs and rights of children.

Leafstamp · 22/06/2021 09:17

Discussions on Twitter indicated that these are absolutely genuine materials. Lots of good people are fighting against it, led by Safe Schools Alliance. Every parent should be aware of this fantastic organisation IMO.

FemaleAndLearning · 22/06/2021 09:35

Leafstamp and every parent should make their schools aware of Safe Schools Alliance.

Surely it depends on the sex of the child answering the question? Anything written by a girl gets 0 marks as we don't need to hear from them... But if it is a boy identifying as a girl then obviously they always get full marks.
GreenWhiteViolet · 22/06/2021 11:23

The second paragraph is completely unnecessary.

The third paragraph is also very odd. There isn't much discussion to be had about 25-15, so is the instruction to talk to your partner for three minutes really an instruction to use the pronouns?

I used to work in primary schools. I'm glad that I no longer do, because I'd refuse to use this sort of resource with children.

LazyHorizon · 22/06/2021 11:40

The National Curriculum has been bollocks ever since Gove and Cummings got their hands on it, but this takes it to a new level.

Guessing it wouldn’t comply with DfE requirements either?

TomatoesAreFruit · 22/06/2021 12:10

My child struggles hugely with maths and reading and would not be able to access this at all. My child is in KS2.

It concerns me that so called inclusion ends up with children like mine being excluded.

NellieEllie · 22/06/2021 12:45

I think Harley needs more than 10 bottles.
Because Harley clearly needs to drink some water and lay off whatever it is Harley has been imbibing up to this point.

ScrollingLeaves · 22/06/2021 13:08

It is indoctrination. Harley’s gender identities has nothing to do with the maths.

It is like saying “Hayley, who is wearing a pink dress, has 15 bottles of water…..”

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 22/06/2021 13:16

Much though I would love for this to be a parody or a mock up, it doesn't appear to be.
And yes, it's ridiculous having that whole second paragraph - what the everloving fuck does ANY of that have to do with actual maths? Plenty of little kids have trouble working out how to do "word maths" problems as it is, without throwing in spurious and irrelevant material in the middle.

Maybe the very fact of whether they can do the maths or not will be a useful indicator of the child's true gender. Grrrrr

Hazycoffeek · 22/06/2021 13:34

I’m not on Twitter but surely the MPs endorsing this should be picked up on this.

WinterTrees · 22/06/2021 13:37

Very disappointed that Just Like Us have used a maths example about handing out bottled water to runners, without including an additional paragraph explaining the environmental damage caused by single use plastic. This is something that should be right at the forefront of the minds of 5-7 year olds as they struggle to get to grips with basic maths. (I would have thought someone as progressive as Harley would be more aware, frankly.)

Floisme · 22/06/2021 13:40

You have three minutes Shock It would take five minutes just to read and digest the question.
Is the answer 'Never put Kool-Aid in a water bottle'?
