Ethical Superstore - very disappointed

And yet another one bites the dust - although the comments (albeit very few) are quite heartening.

Their Facebook feed has the following:

It isn't just people who identify as females who have a period and more education is needed to recognise this!

Trans men and non-binary people can have periods as well as those who identify as female and it is important to raise awareness and acknowledge this 🩸

As part of our language and Inclusivity week, we are taking the steps to educate ourselves that periods should not be labelled as 'female' and should be inclusive for all! 🙌

Join our campaign and donate to help end the stigma and beat period poverty!

Well that’s another shop that doesn’t want my cash.

MissSeventies · 18/06/2021 11:15

'Periods should not be labelled as female', sorry are there men having periods of which I am unaware? On another note a lot of shame around periods is it is because it is something that happens to women and girls and men have labelled it as disgusting/ something that shouldn't be spoken about. I recall girls at school being mercilessly teased because a pad fell put of her bag. Boys acting like to touch it (Unused!) was like touching something radioactive and they would immediately be struck ill. I don't know how we can begin to address these attitudes if we pretend it is not something that happens to women and girls.

acatcalledjohn · 18/06/2021 13:18

I don't identify as anything but I am female and have periods because of that.

Do I have to identify as female (or anything for that matter) for the periods to be a real thing?

Because that's essentially what they are saying.

JellySlice · 18/06/2021 14:48

'Female' is the most inclusive word possible when it comes to periods. 'Female' is inclusive of transmen and OFAB NBs.

You don't have a choice about whether or not you are female, however you feel. But you may not feel feminine, and you do have a choice whether you identify with femininity - ie feminine stereotypes associated with being female - or even whether you identify as feminine.

Periods, though, are not feminine in the sense of stereotypes like long hair and daintiness. Periods are feminine because they are 100% associated with the female sex. There is nothing un-feminine about feeling dysphoric about your period. It is so common, especially among teenagers, that I would say that feeling dysphoric about your periods is a distinctly feminine trait.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 18/06/2021 15:05

Yes, I unsubscribed from their email.
"Periods should be inclusive for all" - if anyone wants mine they're bloody welcome.

NonnyMouse1337 · 18/06/2021 15:06

Ugh I like shopping at the Ethical Superstore. FFS.

firstimemamma · 18/06/2021 15:07

Ffs women have periods! Inclusivity my arse. I have periods because I am a young woman and no amount of bs will change that.

MossRock · 18/06/2021 15:12

This infuriated me too earlier this week. I couldn’t bear to click through and read the website.

I was hoping the wouldn’t lose their brains because they do do sell some woman focussed books etc and I’ve not seen that much wokeness but now this huge move.

Identifying as female??? Labelled as female??? 😡😡😡The absolute incoherent and harmful fuckwits.

NancyDrawed · 18/06/2021 15:22

Trans men and non-binary people can have periods as well as those who identify as female

When I read 'identify as' I silently add (but is/are not)

Therefore if they are promoting to people who are identifying as but are not female, any bleeding from their nether regions is not a period and they need to seek medical help

Beamur · 18/06/2021 17:40

The bandwagon must be groaning with all these semantically challenged companies.

Letsgetreadytocrumble · 18/06/2021 17:47

'Periods.... should be inclusive for all'???.

Yeah, um, that's not how this works...

highame · 18/06/2021 17:49

The virtuous are outbidding each other whilst somewhere in the background those who chose to stay out of this madness will reap the benefits. Probably when the virtuous have swallowed each other whole and realised that a trans shopping basket wont buy you that fabulous mansion

PicsInRed · 18/06/2021 17:58

Indeed. They could have put this at the start and saved everyone some precious time.

Their self congratulatory bulge missed this self back patting fave 💃

*bilge... Grin

littlbrowndog · 18/06/2021 18:05

Oh they can just fuck right off now

Fed up with the sanctimonious bull shite they peddle.

Imagine they wrote that on a tv advert

They wouldn’t because they would be laughed and mocked unmerciful y

Whatwouldscullydo · 18/06/2021 18:21

Its not going down well though is it..

TooTiredForToday · 18/06/2021 18:27

It doesn't seem to be on that link from the OP. There's no mention of women anywhere but they've removed all the other stuff and just have a bit saying language is important.

StillWeRise · 18/06/2021 18:31

yup, I'm in their target audience and even had a gift voucher for them (from a green energy company) actually, so far I had failed to use it as a lot of their stuff struck me as overpriced or greenwashed.
But now they have definitely lost me as a customer.

Yes! You have put this PERFECTLY
SheldonesqueTheBstard · 18/06/2021 18:41

I don’t identify as female.

I don’t have to.

Because of that biology malarkey.

And again, because of that pesky biology, I’m menopausal. Nowadays I’m grateful because it would be like a feckin red rag to see products labelled for people who bleed or uterus haters or female identifiers on it.

Another shop who can have me identifying as a customer who won’t be returning.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 18/06/2021 18:41

And language is really important.

They can have two very fitting words from me.

WarOnWoman · 18/06/2021 18:43

I would love for a company (or 100s) to come right out and say "virtue signalling? Nah, not us. We just care about our products. Here, buy some."

Paraphrasing from journalist on Telegraph today but are we going to have companies who just cater to the left and other companies who just cater for the right, for example? You can't shop with us, you're not good enough? People (ie me) are sick of this, I just want to buy products I like without politics rammed in my face. I DONT CARE.

(deep breath).

RadandMad · 18/06/2021 18:44

@SirVixofVixHall

Well that’s another shop that doesn’t want my cash.
Just what I was thinking.
MaudTheInvincible · 18/06/2021 19:04

I saw a 'people who menstruate' advert on FB today. Checked the why I saw this ad and found this. They know exactly whose money they're after.

Ethical Superstore - very disappointed

Join our campaign and donate to help end the stigma ...

They are making the words 'female' and 'woman' something to be ashamed of.
Everyone who has ever had a period is a female. There should be no stigma attached to that simple fact.Angry
