The Royal Academy have removed Jess' work from their shop due to a handful of complaints that she's 'transphobic'. If you want to support Jess her website is here.

So sick of these utterly craven organisations. I hope she has a legal case against them for discrimination.

@ScreamingMeMe

I see from the comments that there is a petition about this. (Easily found by googling key words.)
Oh sorry Errol, didn't see your post!
JRKismyhero · 18/06/2021 14:33

I've followed Jess for a long time. I cannot believe they just fucking rolled over over absolutely fuck all. The world has gone mad.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 18/06/2021 14:34

While we're doing the purity review, the RA stocks items by Allen Jones in its shop. The same shop that no longer stocks Jess's products.

Allen Jones is famous for the piece Hatstand, Table and Chair.

Hatstand,TableandChairare a group of threeeroticsculptures by Britishpop artistAllen Jones, created in 1969 and first exhibited in 1970. They have been described in retrospect as "emblematic of the spirit of the 1960s"[1]and an "international sensation."[2]At the time they were met with angry protests, particularly fromfeministswho saw them as anobjectification of women.

Or as I would put it, three statues of women placed in demeaning positions as they are used as furniture, including a woman on all fours acting as the base for a table.

You can look at them here. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hatstand,_Table_and_Chair

The Andrew Neil/Andrew Doyle segment on GB News about Jess was brilliant. This is why I'm an advocate for GB News .. this would never have been covered by Sky, the BBC, ITV or Channel 4. And it deserves coverage because it's just plain wrong what's been done to Jess.

@CuntAmongstThePigeons

Well I've emailed a complaint. Sat for 40mins on hold but can't get through and will keep trying.

I have managed to purchase some of the beautiful designs from Jess's website.

I feel sorry for the staff, but that's very interesting. Wonder how easy it is to get through usually?

So if 8 people emailed the RA (eight apparently is the magic number) they would remove the Allan Wall postcards ?

Almost worth testing isn’t it, although “ I am an MN Feminist Viper and my feelingz are hurt” probably doesn’t have the same clout as “I am a Stonewall snowflake and my feelingz are hurt.”

teawamutu · 18/06/2021 14:51

I note also that RA's daily doodle challenge hasn't been updated since the 16th.

DysmalRadius · 18/06/2021 15:08

To be fair, if the 'bigger mob' has to be 'all the women in the world who are tired of getting fucked over by men' then they simply shouldn't have blundered into that fight by being part of the problem!

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 18/06/2021 15:11

Something tells me you wouldn't meet with success, viques.

Which is odd, because Mumsnet is widely stereotyped as extremely middle-class and populated by women who can afford Boden clothes, i.e. the kind of people the RAA would target for advertising. People who can also afford to go up to London to see an art exhibition!

In the social media discussions of this, it looks to me like multiple feminists on social media take an interest in art, and at least eight of the people on Jess's side had Friends of the Royal Academy memberships, which they've now cancelled.

In comparison, the people organising the campaign to get the RAA (and other museums!) to drop Jess do not seem to be people who were ever going to go to any of the museums, galleries and businesses they were telling each other to tag into their denunciations. They'd never heard of these institutions before, which is not surprising as they didn't live in the UK. I doubt I could name anything in America, beyond the Met!

merrymouse · 18/06/2021 15:19

So at least some of the 8 tweets were from the US??????

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 18/06/2021 15:28

Probably of those things where you'd recognise a lot of names if someone mentioned them?

Smithsonian
Guggenheim
Getty (several)
MoMA (several) etc. etc.

Borka · 18/06/2021 15:31

The women's rights are not a crime stickers and the heretic stickers and patches that were out of stock in Jess's shop are now available to pre-order.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 18/06/2021 15:31

I don't know who actually got off their arses and sent the emails. It could be that the eight people who did the emailing were UK-based, but the people chanting burn the witch "I think your partnership with Jess De Wahls is inappropriate" on Insta and twitter certainly weren't all from the UK. L

It just seems like they think if they shout the loudest then it makes it true.

And people will blindly follow this instruction without actually asking what about her belief is hateful.

"Why do you think JdW's view is hateful?"

"Because it is."

"But why though?"

"It just is, okay?!"

Cwenthryth · 18/06/2021 15:43

Andrew Doyle says to Andrew Neil on the GB News segment that the complaint originated from a US-based embroiderer (he named them), and other complaints followed from that.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 18/06/2021 15:46

This is one of the instigating posts. As you can see, the embroidery artist has listed all the places they can find. The artist is based in... Minnesota.

The replies include another America-based embroiderer, and the likes come from fellow etsy sellers (customers are getting ripped-off, I tell you) based in New York, California, Belgium. I don't believe any of them were in danger of going to see the Wallace collection in the first place. Grin

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 18/06/2021 15:50

Beginning to wonder if I should create an Etsy account, tbh. I've just seen that one person is charging nearly 30 quid to stitch customers a little rainbow. I have been sewing, knitting and building flat-pack furniture since I was 11 (they're really very similar) and it's the kind of thing I would frame and hang up on my wall if my kid did it. I wouldn't pay someone to do it for me!

MarianneUnfaithful · 18/06/2021 15:58

Arts institutions should think very very carefully before engaging in censorship.

The comparisons with artists of a spectrum of views is one thing and demonstrated the hypocrisy the engage in when embarking on censorship of this kind, but for me, it is the intellectual dereliction of an arts organisation giving in to censorship that is the real issue.

Hey Ho. I will buy Jess’s patches etc direct from her website and cut out the middle man. (Oh yes, bound to be a man).

Am I right in thinking that I am not allowed to link to the petition?

Tesla73 · 18/06/2021 16:02

I went on the RA site and made my feelings known via the Contact Us section

hopefully i'm one of thousands flooding the site telling them what they think of this sinister censorship - just like with Twitter etc paedophiles have more rights that women

I hope that person isn't an artist and relying on it to make a living, because their work is fucking shit.

I am so sick of people casually accusing others of 'misinformation' and in particular of 'hate' when the people they are so gleefully taking down and so aggressively threatening have shown zero signs of hatred to anyone. This is yet more Taming of the Shrew style 'say the moon is the sun or I will torture you' bullying where the bully accuses their innocent victim of what they are actually doing in plain sight.

I don't know if this has previously been mentioned (sorry - I should be working so don't have time to scroll back and check) but I've just discovered that Jess De Wahls has a Patreon account, which seems like a good and affordable way of supporting her.

Link in a separate post, as I'm not sure if it's allowed
