The Royal Academy have removed Jess' work from their shop due to a handful of complaints that she's 'transphobic'. If you want to support Jess her website is here.

So sick of these utterly craven organisations. I hope she has a legal case against them for discrimination.

I’ve also ordered from Jess’ online shop as a result of this cancellation. I’m so pissed off at the relish TRAs take in trying to destroy someone’s livelihood. Hoping Jess is buoyed up by the increase in her sales and supportive messages.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 19/06/2021 08:44

I can’t believe the reactions of some of her ‘friends’ in the Times articles. What a shower of shallow sh*s. I hope they realise what a load of utter sh**s they are. ‘Be kind’ my arse...

NancyDrawed · 19/06/2021 08:46

Another great piece from Janice.

From the comments:

Seems to me the trouble with progressive types is they never know when they've won and they end up going too far . Then ordinary, decent folk turn away from them

Nothing progressive about this. It's just boring old misogyny.

TheElementsSong · 19/06/2021 08:53

Janice Turner gets it spot-on as usual!

The "Never trust a bitch who makes vagina art" jumped out at me. Rank misogyny.

That seems to be a common theme among 'friends' in the art community.

I mentioned an artist earlier in the threat who has faced similar behaviour, her friends and even her fiancee have been told to walk away from her or face the same treatment. She ended up producing a print to sell to raise money for cease and desist letters, but had to close the blog part of her website because it was being spammed with porn and abuse.

I cringe at the 'be kind' mantra now, it's been co-opted to just another way to try and keep women in their place.

MadameKali · 19/06/2021 09:02

I've just posted about this on my Instagram and before it went up I got a message along the lines of "this caption is very similar to one that has been reported"
They really don't like people disagreeing with them do they?

BraveBananaBadge · 19/06/2021 09:05

Thanks for the share, Janice always gives me hope.

I've also bought one of Jess's prints and sent a complaint to the RA this morning (my first too!)

midgemagneto · 19/06/2021 09:11

Thanks also for the share
Reading the comments is cheering

I've pre-ordered one of Jess's embroidered patches - it is very heartening to see how many things have sold out and are on pre-order on her website now.

SnoopyLights · 19/06/2021 09:33

I have unfollowed the RA on all social media now.

I have emailed them, and I have completed the 'contact us' section on their website.

The first thing I saw on their website were the words "Welcome Back" so I have told them that I am not welcome, as I agree with Jess de Wahls and her views which are protected in law.

I have also said that they may have heard of the campaign in Scotland where women are telling politicians "Don't expect my X if you don't respect my sex" and said that as a charity, the RA should not expect my £ if they don't respect my sex. It might not flow as well as the original slogan but I hope it gets the point across to them all the same.

BraveBananaBadge · 19/06/2021 09:38

Yes Snoopy I made the point to tell them I'd brought direct from Jess as well, probably the only language they'll understand. Unfollowing them too.

@Horizons83 that thread was glorious, thank you

Thank you! Amazingly well written and spot on article

Adichie’s essay wonders whether such vitriol is really to win compassion for trans people. Or has their cause become a legitimised outlet for baser feelings: professional jealousy, misogyny, amorphous rage? Now that shifty serotonin buzz from hurting someone you dislike comes with social cachet. What fun! You’re a good guy, for being vile.

From janice's article.

The gleeful misogyny motivating many has long been noted by women. I hope acknowledgment of it become more widespread.

GrownUpBeans · 19/06/2021 10:19

I've contacted the RA too. Since the Forstater judgement I'm much more hopeful these things might have an impact.

Annehedonia · 19/06/2021 10:24

I've bought directly from Jess's website.

All makes me think if this:
www.syfy.com/syfywire/doctor-who-the-witchfinders-in-celebration-of-foolish-women-who-talk-too-much

I'm thinking if creating a 'Women Against Witchfinders' piece... Smile

RoyalCorgi · 19/06/2021 10:24

Janice's article is superb, as always.

I'm interested in the legal side of this. I can see that, when it comes to employment, Maya's gender-critical views are protected in law. In the Uni of Essex case, the university was in breach of its statutory obligations regarding free speech, and may also have been in breach of the Equality Act in implementing a policy that indirectly discriminated against women.

But in this case? Does the Royal Academy have any kind of legal obligation when it comes to deciding what to stock in its shop? It is not in this case discriminating against an employee or refusing to provide a service to a particular individual or group. I'd be interested to know what lawyers think.

PPCD · 19/06/2021 10:32

Have the RA taken down their statement on instagram, I can't find it.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 19/06/2021 10:34

Gosh. If only there was a way of finding such things online...

YellowFish12 · 19/06/2021 10:34

@ RoyalCorgi I would hope that RA writing on Twitter that Jess had transphobic views would be libel post the MF ruling that GC views are valid and protected?

BraveBananaBadge · 19/06/2021 10:36

Suppose the shop can stock what it wants Royal, but to have withdrawn Jess's work publicly and giving such a specific reason it could be more libellous than anything?

They presumably chop and change what's available all the time without fuss, but to have called Jess's character into question in such a damaging way certainly changes things. Suppose it's whether she wants to pursue that.

If it were me, even if they backtracked and apologised I wouldn't want anything to do with them again.

RoyalCorgi · 19/06/2021 10:37

@ RoyalCorgi I would hope that RA writing on Twitter that Jess had transphobic views would be libel post the MF ruling that GC views are valid and protected?

Yes, I agree. In fact, I think it would be libel anyway, regardless of the MF ruling, as there is no evidence at all that Jess has said or written anything transphobic. So that was immensely foolish of them. But I'm not sure whether there is anything legally she can do about the decision not to stock her work.
