Well done to J. K. Rowling for winning a Nibbie (British Book Awards, organised by The Bookseller) - Troubled Blood has been voted Book of the Year - Crime & Thrillers.

I've just read the entire series of Strike books and watched the first four BBC adaptations. Loved them. Delighted to see this recognition.

I'm posting here, as this feels like a brave decision, in a year when JKR has stood up for women's rights and suffered dog's abuse as a result. Additionally, I thought Troubled Blood contained a lot of interesting insights into women's lives, both in the 1970s and now. The dinner party was excruciating but I was cheering Strike on, as just one example.

Ooo yay!

It was a bloody big book

I often read in the bath and that would have drowned me

But thats great news

I was going to hang on for the paperback, but when I saw how long it was I decided to splash out on the hardback. (Don't have a Kindle.)

Oh that’s brilliant!! 😃😃

Ive no doubt the booksellers ritual cancelling is being arranged already 😆

WallaceinAnderland · 13/05/2021 17:51

I've just finished it. Absolutely great read and well deserved prize.

All the hoo-ha at the time is a load of nonsense and obviously raised by people who had not read the book. Embarrassing really, I'm glad she's won.

On a side note, I've just started Richard Osman's Thursday Murder Club so I'm on a roll here.

SirSamuelVimes · 13/05/2021 17:53

Yay! I bloody loved that book. I have an unhealthy level of crush on Cormoran too.

TwistedEyeOfHorus · 13/05/2021 17:56

Excellent news! It was a brilliant read. And fantastic to read this on the same day JK has announced a 6 figure sum from the sale of The Ickabog has gone to India for Covid aid. What a great lady!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 13/05/2021 17:57

Me too. I loved the depiction of his relationship with his Aunt Joan and his Uncle Ted.

Robin is wonderful too.

Hopeful there will be another one later this year! Given how long they are, she seems to write very fast.

I am the same but pre-ordered the hard back when “everything happened”, took one look at it and bought it on kindle too Grin
Abhannmor · 13/05/2021 18:04

Yay! Bloody good book. Bit long mind ...I read the first 4 HP books to the kids. Around Order of the phoenix I thought...she needs an editor. But who's gonna tell her Grin

Hopeishere52 · 13/05/2021 18:04

That’s excellent news , I am enjoying reading Troubled Blood at the moment. Also we will enjoy our purchase of the Ickabog even more knowing that JKR has made this donation for COVID aid. Such a generous, thoughtful woman.

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 13/05/2021 18:05

Brilliant! I love the Strike books: much better than most crime fiction out there.

NothingIsWrong · 13/05/2021 18:06

Having a crush on Cormoran is never unhealthy.

Futile though as he's all mine. MINE I TELL YOU...

Sophoclesthefox · 13/05/2021 18:17

That’s amazing, many congratulations to her! It’s very well deserved. I only went to buy the books as an act of solidarity when the witch-hunt took off, then got completely hooked, blasted through them, then gobbled up the tv series too.

I luffs Cormoran and Robin. Luffs, luffs luffs them 😍 this book was amazing, and I was rooting for Cormoran at the dinner party too. I think she picked up the topics for it from here Wink

For any passing scoldy types, I am going to point out that there is nothing at all transphobic in the books, she is not transphobic, and she didn’t name herself after some obscure doctor. She is a great storyteller, an amazing philanthropist and an all round good egg, and she deserves this.

persistentwoman · 13/05/2021 18:23

That's such good news. I really enjoyed the book - a real tour de force. Each one of the Strike novels improved with this one being outstanding.

WhereYouLeftIt · 13/05/2021 18:32

Brilliant news!

It just goes to show what a truly excellent writer she is, switching between the genres and being successful again and again. I can but hope she decides to branch out into sci-fi, my life would then be completeGrin.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 13/05/2021 19:09

Only on the second in the series, but it they have got me back into reading fiction and it feels great. Finished the first one, tried to start something different but had to instead pick up the Silkworm as I was already too invested in the characters...

Lordamighty · 13/05/2021 19:14

I’ve just finished reading this, was saving it for a holiday read but couldn’t wait any longer. It was a riveting read, she is a great storyteller & I am so pleased she is writing crime novels as that is my favourite genre.

FlyPassed · 13/05/2021 19:16

Well done JKR! I never bothered with the Potter books but devoured all the Strike books in a few weeks last year. Troubled Blood was my favourite. It's an absolute page-turner.

CakeWarrior · 13/05/2021 19:17

I love the strike novels. And this deserved to win in reams! So talented, so well written. I am going to restart from the beginning i think x

RedDogsBeg · 13/05/2021 19:23

Excellent, well deserved JKR.

No doubt there will be a-weeping, a-wailing, gnashing of teeth and rending of garments in the usual crowd.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 13/05/2021 19:25

Cool! I am listening to it right now! I read it when it came out and really enjoyed it. I like to listen to a good murder when I’m cooking.

Daughterofmabel · 13/05/2021 19:26

Yay! Fabulous novel

Whatstheweatherlike · 13/05/2021 19:29

Yay, this has made me so happy 😊. Such an amazing series of books, I've really enjoyed following the relationship between Robin and Strike. Troubled Blood had some very interesting feminist strands running through too. Yes, the dinner party was an excruciating read!

parentalhelpline · 13/05/2021 19:31

Here's a spoiler-ful thread about the Strike books which has gone a bit quiet lately if anyone wants to revive it:

BoreOfWhabylon · 13/05/2021 19:32

Oh, I'm so pleased!

I haven't read any of the Strike series. Can Imread TB as a stand alone or should I read the others first?
