Degendered underwear - or just gendered underwear for those not same sex/gender 🤔

I may be reading this wrong, I was expecting some new style that suited all but extreams, however uf I have read it right it's the same old gendered fashion for those who feel different from their sex with added bits to help replace those you don't have.
I may have missed the point but gender free to me doesn't mean breast packs for those without or genital pouches. It means walking into a shop and the same piece of clothing being available in all shapes and sizes for all people. Maybe I am being overly simplistic though.

So sex-free underwear, but plenty of gender.

EachDubh · 08/05/2021 23:16

Much better headline 🤔🙂

Now available in X, Y and Gen Z fronts.

Hmmm, can't really see the point of bras for people with no boobs. The whole thing with bras seems to be about hoiking them up & presenting them like some form of titty treat to mankind. (Light sports bra for me anytime.)
Gender neutral pants? Can recommend silk boxers or French knickers if you're feeling fancy.

I like gendered clothing. The last thing I want is the sort of shop you describe.

Having said that I'm not quite sure the OP and the pair behind this are so far apart. The article below is full of self- aggrandising, sanctimonious waffle about the pretty mundane achievement of producing a very limited range of underwear , all of which has been done before but ends with this:-

“In an ideal world, you’d walk into a store and there’s no men’s or women’s section,” said Graham. “You’d simply choose what makes you feel great, affirms your identity, and allows you to express yourself without a brand boxing you in. We’re a part of this movement.”

The Sunday Times has this. I see Louis Vuitton and Burberry are both trying to flog men's skirts

The article the OP posted referred to a designer called Art School. I'm not seeing anything particularly ground breaking here- it's over priced slogan t- shirts. There are a couple of dresses which would be nice if they weren't sludge- coloured. The dresses are cut for a female body shape with breasts, a waist and hips

This is bollocks, because male and female bodies are different. Differently shaped, differently sized. It's all well and good having tailored shirts beside dresses, but for one, you'd have to entirely change the sizing system- a men's S is worlds away from a women's S! I can actually see why they think this would be a good idea, but it's pretty impractical.

I agree it's impractical and it's not something I would want but the OP also seems keen on some new style that suited all but extreams
Buckingafout · 09/05/2021 02:27

I have moved over completely to wearing men's underpants. The wide elastic band is SO much more comfortable.

MonkeyNotOrgangrinder · 09/05/2021 06:59

In the The Cut article linked to above, it shows Alok V Menon wearing the underwear in an Instagram post, and the company thanking Alok and saying they're honoured.
Presumably the same Alok V Menon of 'little girls can be kinky' fame? Unless there's another transactivist with the same name?

Packingsoapandwater · 09/05/2021 07:44

I had a look at the products they sell. Their market is pretty narrow, as they seem to be catering to an extremely small slice of the population. There's nothing, for example, for someone with a bust.

They seem to be chasing what we used to call the "mythic i-D market": that elusive group of young people under 30 who have a lot of disposable income, are model slim, and are very subcultural. In truth, the numbers of people who hit all three of these in the UK are minuscule.

It may be different in the US though.

LongPauseNoAnswer · 09/05/2021 07:47

It won’t be long before we’re all in red capes.

I’m so sick of this gender shite, made up bullshit.

bageljam · 09/05/2021 07:56

I don't understand why e.g. a woman who considers herself 'gender free' or 'gender neutral' would want to wear pants that make it look like she's got a penis. Surely that's wanting to positively look like a man?

Temp023 · 09/05/2021 07:59

Meh, it’s a fad!
It’s all a fad, can’t get too excited over any of it.

Whythesadface · 09/05/2021 08:03

Just read this op to DP.
He put on a Thong.
I dearly wish I could send you the photo.
He wants to know if castrating his boy parts is supposed to be sexy.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 09/05/2021 08:17

I agree with OP. Wearing clothes padded to imitate breasts or penis is the opposite of gender-free.

FFSFFSFFS · 09/05/2021 09:38

Well......as someone with breasts that do need actual support I am totally and utterly excluded from this. It's almost like the default body type is male.

lazylinguist · 09/05/2021 10:03

Yes, they might as well call them transpants, since the point of them appears not to be to wear something that is suitable for your body, but to wear something that makes you look as if you have a different body than you actually have. Gender-free? Nope. Inclusive and suitable for all? Nope. Suitable for a tiny minority of people.

I had the same thought when I saw that picture. Not someone who most companies would want to be associated with their products, surely.

Also in the article in The Cut:

One of Abrams’s early memories is sneaking into their brother’s room to steal his briefs — a treasured item that felt more natural to wear, but one they’d have to hide. Growing up in the Midwest, Abrams knew that buying boys’ underwear was never going to be allowed. Still, they gravitated toward underwear and clothing that society said were not for them.

Once again someone who grew up in an environment where stereotypes were pushed to extremes decides the only way to live is to be trans.

MonkeyNotOrgangrinder · 09/05/2021 10:23

Yy if a "cishet" man said that they would be cancelled immediately. But apparently twitter are deleting and banning anyone who mentions Alok's thoughts on little girls. I don't see the difference tbh, apart from clothing choices, between a cis man and Alok?
Maybe the underwear company don't know about it or something?

MonkeyNotOrgangrinder · 09/05/2021 10:25

Yes, this seems to happen a lot doesn't it? Almost as if trans is not innate, but a product of the enforcement of gendered stereotypes 🤔

BruteForce · 09/05/2021 16:28

My first post!

I've just seen Bluebella's new ad (underwear company that seems to cater for women only) and I'm speechless.

The two stars are Tayce and A'Whora, stars of RuPaul's Drag Race. It's being done for Pride Week.

I have no idea if my post belongs here but I saw this thread and thought I'd ask you what do you think.

As I said, I was left speechless. Why on earth a company is dressing drag artists in underwear when I'd assume their sales are primarily from women or men buying for us I have no idea.

As for degendered underwear, well, I'm an old fart that still buys her (comfortable) knickers and sports bras from M&S. I don't suppose they can help that they have a large amount of reviews from men that say they wear their lace knickers but I am miffed about their changing room policy.

trancepants · 09/05/2021 16:51

I have moved over completely to wearing men's underpants. The wide elastic band is SO much more comfortable.
Same. Wide comfy waist, no vpl, no wedgies, better quality cotton, better sweat absorption and overall more comfortable during sports due to the longer legs. The extra material at the front stretches over the hips. Better than any women’s underwear but not better than similar pants designed for women would be.

(My username and underwear choices are a coincidence.)

Nellodee · 09/05/2021 16:59

Slightly off topic, but we used to often buy our girls knickers from Canada when we visited there. They had a couple of really nice brands that were not itchy or uncomfortable at all. One positive effect of it being a woke capital is that the girl’s knickers are really cute and cool, with dinosaurs, comic book patterns and bright coloured stripes. Far better than the endless Elsa knickers we have here (though I am not knocking Elsa!) I’d be very pleased if we could get some less gendered girl’s knickers on this side of the Atlantic - though preferably not with front stuffing in them.
