Degendered underwear - or just gendered underwear for those not same sex/gender 🤔

www.theguardian.com/fashion/2021/may/08/urbody-gender-free-underwear-fashion-industry

I may be reading this wrong, I was expecting some new style that suited all but extreams, however uf I have read it right it's the same old gendered fashion for those who feel different from their sex with added bits to help replace those you don't have.
I may have missed the point but gender free to me doesn't mean breast packs for those without or genital pouches. It means walking into a shop and the same piece of clothing being available in all shapes and sizes for all people. Maybe I am being overly simplistic though.

I’d be very pleased if we could get some less gendered girl’s knickers on this side of the Atlantic - though preferably not with front stuffing in them

Just a wild guess- but any supermarket, M&S, Next or John Lewis. They all have colourful, stripy, tie- die or plain black and white knickers for girls. There are pink and Disney but it's a wild exaggeration to suggest that's the only choices.

“MonkeyNotOrgangrinder

In the The Cut article linked to above, it shows Alok V Menon wearing the underwear in an Instagram post, and the company thanking Alok and saying they're honoured.
Presumably the same Alok V Menon of 'little girls can be kinky' fame? Unless there's another transactivist with the same name?
www.google.com/amp/s/www.sausageroll.com.au/tech/twitter-defends-gross-little-girls-are-kinky-tweet-by-alok-vaid-menon/%3famp”

When looking at the photos of him in the Cut article about the ‘degendered’ underwear, I was wondering skeptically, but a little willing to be wrong, is someone like him actually perfectly benign ( apropos shared private spaces)?

Then I saw your post and read the full Twitter post he’d written. He absolutely is not.

Women's bodies are shaped differently. Hence clothes marketed at women. I'm not interested in clothes that fit everyone, but in actual fact fit no one. Or just a select few. Clothing that actually fits women properly will always be a thing. Business models like this suit very few and will be out of business in no time.

Those who wear men’s underwear: which brands?

Defaultname · 09/05/2021 19:18

I'm waiting for a unisex codpiece.

Just regular Primark/Supermarket hipster shorts that are fully stitched (ie no opening to pee through) at the front.
MonkeyNotOrgangrinder · 09/05/2021 19:48

Yes ScrollingLeaves it was a very odd thing that he said, to say the least. His motivation for saying it can only be guessed at Hmm

Can I ask if the men's underwear bulges at the front or lies flat?

I'm sick of buying women's pants and the elastic not lasting very long.

I don't think my boobs, hips, waist and bum would look good in these all gender clothes but I would be happy for both men and women to experiment with styles.

I don't know where some of you shop that you have so much trouble finding clothes. I've got pure cotton, big knickers from Sainsbury's and Asda some of which I remember, for a particular reason, buying are coming up 6 years old.

In my experience the material stretches flat and that helps make the room my hips need. And if anything it possibly makes the legs a tiny bit longer, which is a big plus to me as I specifically buy men’s underwear for the longer leg as I find it so, so much more comfortable when my underwear ends on my thighs rather than somewhere across my bum.

I thought it was going to be about Oddballs who sell underpants that are the same for both men and women. They look really comfy.

I’ve also seen gender neutral shirts. They have 4 styles and you buy the style that suits your body shape. I really like that idea.
but there was a poster on the Facebook add who said that they should be cheaper as non binary people earn less

EachDubh · 10/05/2021 02:42

Sorry, not had time to come back.
My op is possibly misleading - I personally am not suggesting 1 clothing type sized to fit all, it's just the idea that came into my head when reading the article. I feel wear what you want, but there's no need for a big song and dance. I grew up wearing boxers, so much better than stupid girls pants that I otherwise had. It wasn't a big deal though, they were just clothes. (they did not contain any bulges either).

Why are girls' pants "stupid"?

Seriously- why is the need for this doing down of everything made for women or girls? As I said goodness knows where some of you shop that everything made for men is so much better?

They sell underwear in the same patterns for men and women- not the same style. The men's versions clearly have extra material for male genitals.

We have ‘unisex’ scrubs to wear at work. But they’re not. They’re designed for men and I found them really uncomfortable to wear especially the trousers.

I work 8am-8pm and need to be comfortable. So I ended up buying my own scrubs to wear.

sleepyhead · 10/05/2021 18:00

Girls wearing boxers was a teen thing in the 80s, particularly the patterned ones with snoopy or love hearts etc. Same with wearing 501s - they weren't really cut for us but we wore them anyway.

Ds1 and Dh both wear jersey briefs and they look really comfy. Love a pant with a bit of give and cover in it.

Women's cotton underwear always cuts across your bum instead of fully covering it and finishing on the thigh. Even women's 'shorts style knickers cut off about 2/3s down the bum. This means they move about and you get wedgies, especially if you do a lot of vigorous sport and exercise. You can get women's shorts that actually finish around the thigh but those are almost always "shapewear" they are not made of cotton and they press your abdomen and sometimes hips and bum into uncomfortable positions. Even if they weren't too uncomfortable for exercise, the material they made of is horribly sweaty. You can sometimes get very light material shorts but again, they are not cotton but they also have no seams, so the material ends up rolling up at at the thigh and off over the bum.

I for one have no desire to have a chunk of my underwear repeatedly gravitate into my bum cheeks, so I very much want my underwear to come down well over my thighs in a firm seam. I have no desire to be reshaped. And I like cotton so I don't end up with a manky, sweaty gusset because I'm extremely sporty. I have never found women's underwear that do all of that. Mens underwear does. I'd prefer the nice, comfy, practical pants to be made for a woman's shape but even if they are not, they are still more comfortable than anything that is currently on offer for women. If you know of some practical women's cotton undershorts that provide full coverage to the upper thigh, let me know where they are. I'd prefer them and would be delighted if they existed.

justawoman · 10/05/2021 19:59

Personally I don’t like wearing shorts or having material on my upper thigh. I also find it inconvenient when I’m menstruating as I always wear a pad which wraps around (disposable or reusable) and you can’t wear those with shorts. I also like having my stomach covered and hate having a band cutting across my hips or lower belly, so my happy place is cotton granny knickers (full briefs) from supermarkets. We’re all different, I suppose.

trancepants · 10/05/2021 20:14

I've got a pad on with my shorts right now. They work just fine. It's a reusable bamboo pad with "wings" that clip together underneath.

trancepants · 10/05/2021 20:15

However, obviously different people have their own preferences but women's underwear is rarely comfortable for heavy activity.

MissBarbary · 10/05/2021 20:48

Sounds as if you are buying it too small. There are loads of big, full covering, cotton knickers around but then you (general you) seem to so much enjoy whinging about how awful everything designed for women is.

I can't really buy them too small. Most women's underwear is far too big for me. I have a full range of different sizes that I wore all the way down when I lost weight and they all shift about and end up, up my butt. If they don't have at least an inch of inseam, they shift about. Big, "full covering" knickers still have no inseam to speak of. Women's knickers are utterly inadequate for my life. They are badly designed for my needs.

I have no problem recognising when I'm suffering from internalised misogyny. I am in fact like other girls, I love the company of women. Turns out I actually do find pink, in almost all it's shades, to be a very pleasing colour even if I don't want everything made for little girls to be that colour. My favourite 'job'/most fulfilling career is being a stay at home mother. I really enjoy knitting and crocheting. All things that 'feminist' teen me would have said the opposite of. But the standard offering of women's knickers are not remotely suitable for my needs.

justawoman · 10/05/2021 21:18

They suit me down to the ground though. We’re all different.
