reusable sanitary protection for people

I sometimes think I'm getting oversensitised to this issue but, on radio 5 this afternoon, there was a lovely story about a young woman who has started making reusable sanitary protection. Great. But you know the word they didn't say once? Women.
Both the young woman and the presenter talked of people who need it. Why not just say women?

OP posts:

Ummm, in the interest of equality can't men have periods too? 🤔

Howzaboutye · 06/05/2021 22:32

Because they have been brainwashed.

Lotsofwishes · 06/05/2021 22:44

I am a maker of reusable sanitary wear and have had HUGE backlash over these. People sending abuse, trying to ruin our business etc all because we said ‘women’ and not people

Utterly ridiculous!!!
Voice0fReason · 06/05/2021 22:48

It's tiresome isn't it. Because some women want to deny their biology, women are no longer allowed to talk about being women.

So there’s your answer, OP, heavy and aggressive pressure from those who hate the word woman.
Rhannion · 06/05/2021 22:52

I heard that interview on BBC Scotland and was shocked that Kaye Adams who is normally a good presenter didn’t pick up on that, but then it is the BBC.

That’s shocking and terrible and I hope your business is doing well in spite of that bullshit.

tedsletterofthelaw · 06/05/2021 22:59

Was it specifically period products? As incontinence pads/underwear fall under the sanitary products heading.

I was in Primark and noticed that the Maternity clothes section was named ‘ Parents’ or ‘ Parenthood’ it made me want to pull the signs down

Ridiculous!!

It's so depressing that the lobbying of this kind of thing always seems to be led by trans woman allies who say it makes trans women feel 'othered', rather than allies of trans men who feel that. Either way, decent and kind people would agree that using the word woman doesn't other anyone. My trans friends hate the lobbying and aggressive accusatory tone people use to erase the word women as it makes their lives harder. Those complaining about the word women don't speak on behalf of the majority of trans people IMO.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 07/05/2021 07:22

I was reading yesterday on Facebook a about how ‘people’ get gynaecological cancer. From an organisation that is supposed to focus on women. The word woman was not used at all. That and the Fawcett Society...

It’s getting bloody silly now.

I am so sorry to hear this. You should be able to communicate to your customers using the words women and girls. What a ridiculous era we live in.

As a sanitary product maker, would you mind clarifying whether the products are only for period use or can they be used for urinary issues as well.

My question is, I guess, are the same products multi purpose. I would assume they would require not only different wicking ability, but also wicking in different zones. So I am more checking my thinking here if you wouldn’t mind sharing your expertise.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 07/05/2021 07:40

But you have to remember who is buying this stuff. If you bleed you need - simple as that. Keyboard warriors are generally agitating for kicks and hardly the type of customers who would be loyal anyway.

Stick with saying ‘women’ and women will buy.

Helleofabore · 07/05/2021 07:50

I think there will be enough buying products ‘because’ the product or communication says ‘women’.

Either deliberately or because of language / comprehension.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 07/05/2021 07:53

I make a point.

If someone trying to sell me something expects me to cheer on the fact that ‘woman’ is deliberately not used and sometimes language hideously mangled in an attempt to be ‘inclusive’ of people who aren’t users or need to get a life (however ‘men’ is never removed from packaging is it?) - they can get lost.

Helleofabore · 07/05/2021 07:59

I do too toffee. For instance, I support Bodyform because of their wonderful video and ... because the ‘always’ packaging change.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 07/05/2021 08:04

I’m using Rael now (‘ Designed for women by women’). They are expensive but I need industrial strength ones - these are very good! I hope to god the they don’t go over to the dark side...

Whatwouldscullydo · 07/05/2021 08:20

This stuff upsets me alot tbh.

I love reusable. Finally we had something that appeared to actually be designed fir women..you can custom make them any design size fabric etc you want. Finally something not made to make us feel disgusting and that we need to whip it all away and dispose of ir completely. No perfumes or adverts telling women and girls how discreet you need to be and how our vaginas are so gross we need to risk.yeast infections to smell like car air freshners.

You can even have a bit of fun with it and pick from.all.sorts of designs. Bees, whales, cats, zombies... what a lovely message to girls...

Amd then you see the Web site and girl is a word that just never be.mentioned. takes you straight back to teaching them just how unimportant you are..

Why.

Sparklywolf · 07/05/2021 08:34

Helleofabore I couldn't say about reusable products but even a heavy duty sanitary pad will be oversaturated by a single bout of urinary incontinence. While a good size continence pad doesn't always properly absorb the thicker more viscous period blood.

I've been a carer for over 20 years and have yet to encounter reusable continence products, maybe it could be the next big thing? But there are definately different shaped disposable pads for men and women.....cos different shaped bodies and genitalia!

Helleofabore · 07/05/2021 08:36

takes you straight back to teaching them just how unimportant you are..

Most definitely whatwouldScullydo. I remember saying this to my teen back when Always changed the packaging. We had just made progress and then wham!.. now we are shamed again for being even called women.

Whatwouldscullydo · 07/05/2021 09:16

Some even have support groups/forums too which is great. Great until you see someone thrown out for not following the rules . Those rules being dont mention only women and girls have periods. We are naturally very wary of discussing particularly young children and a female only closed group allowing woman to gather advice fir dealing with their children as well as their own issues would be lovely, except you then have no idea who it is you are talking to because it's "inclusive"

How do we teach our girls how to make good decisions re whatever self care they choose and about environmental and health impacts of all their choices if there is no where left they can discuss ir purchase from that even recognises who they are.

Ironically so many contribute products or offer large discounts to period poverty projects and/or are active in providing products to girls in other countries where they are forced ti drop out of school when they start their periods. Something that cannot be identified out of. So they know. They really know. Makes you feel they are happy to lie to you and wonder what else are they lying about.

Such a shame.because I.love the idea of supporting small businesses/wahms and making a difference to those less fortunate by doing so. Said makers/providers were a god send in.lock.down no 1am hour long waits in virtual queues hoping to grab the last box of tampax.

That is utterly unbelievable. Don't people have better things to do with their lives?

I know you probably won't want to put links, but I would happily support you if I could.
