reusable sanitary protection for people

I sometimes think I'm getting oversensitised to this issue but, on radio 5 this afternoon, there was a lovely story about a young woman who has started making reusable sanitary protection. Great. But you know the word they didn't say once? Women.
Both the young woman and the presenter talked of people who need it. Why not just say women?

Sparklywolf

That was my thinking too Sparklywolf. Thanks.

So, the reality is that there is no reason at all not to mention women in the OP rather than 'people'.

@Lotsofwishes

I am a maker of reusable sanitary wear and have had HUGE backlash over these. People sending abuse, trying to ruin our business etc all because we said ‘women’ and not people
Change it to females then? They can’t own that can they it’s not possible because only females have wombs which can menstruate. Honestly I am getting to the point (didn’t take long) to be happy to relinquish the label ‘woman’ and just be a referred to as ‘ female’. That’s because I am not happy to remain a ‘woman’ if that can also include ‘man with penis’. I can’t help thinking of the bible and how Eve was created from the rib of Adam, like we are just a side shoot creation from men. Which is precisely what they are declaring when they say anyone can be a woman. Expect this may infuriate some feminists to hear me say this but honestly it’s just how I’m feeling right now 😩
BreatheAndFocus · 08/05/2021 09:57

Wrong. Some TW are already saying they’re female. Conceding the word ‘woman’ is wrong - and this is one of the reasons why. If we retreat into ‘female’, they’ll want that word too. That’s the whole point.

I won’t buy anything that erases the word ‘woman’. I’m sick to f**kery of this whole crap. Sick for women, but also sick for the many trans people who are being harmed by this lunacy and just want to get on with their lives in peace.

Whatwouldscullydo · 08/05/2021 10:04

I also don't believe that it's helpful to indulge the notion that anyone is giving a crap what you are buying. Check out staff and the makers of reusable products don't know or don't care why you are buying them. Dads would buy them for their dds. Husbands for their wives etc. No one cares.

Well righty ho then, I'll just leave it as I would like to use a resuable sanitary product company that knows what a woman is and isn't afraid to use the word woman.

Woman, adult human female, is not offensive. Menstruator is.

Totally agree @BreatheAndFocus

Name and shame. We want details of who and what. Its a two way street, if your man enough to bully your man enough to do it publically surely, they will be happy you out them here.

I should imagine the business do care if people are buying their merchendise.
Whatwouldscullydo · 08/05/2021 12:00

They are not making judgements or assumptions based on your purchases though. Confused

The idea that purchasing something is a statement you are trying to.make or invalidating somehow is rather self absorbed.

Were you deliberately trying to put non-binary people and trans men off using the product, or was it just a slip?

Will you pm the link (if you feel comfortable doing that). Would prefer to buy from a company who knows what a woman is.
MummBraTheEverLeaking · 08/05/2021 15:11

Using the word women when you're selling sanitary products must be just a slip now, better get on your knees and grovel! Otherwise you're deliberately a horrible person. For goodness sake Hmm

If woman offends so much just find another company that uses language you like, I'm sure there's lots of them about.

Whatwouldscullydo · 08/05/2021 15:13

Why would it put them off? Non binary people clearly believe in biological.sex or they wouldn't use it to define themselves against. I'm.sure trans men are also very aware of their sex given that still.have a use for the products. Decoupling the word woman /girl from their biological reality has dire consequences. Men kept women ignorant of their bodies to control them. removing the words women and girls from information about their health products feeds straight back.into this. Those words ensure that women and girls are aware that they need these products and why. It is nothing to do with wanting to attack a people..but thank you for proving my point about it not being healthy to allow people to assume everything is about you.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 08/05/2021 15:17

Sanpro is based on sex not gender.

Thank you Whatwouldscullydo.

When people accuse women of ‘slipping’ up in using the words to describe themselves, they seem to forget the deep history of why the words are vitally important.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 08/05/2021 15:50

@youvegottenminuteslynn

It's so depressing that the lobbying of this kind of thing always seems to be led by trans woman allies who say it makes trans women feel 'othered', rather than allies of trans men who feel that. Either way, decent and kind people would agree that using the word woman doesn't other anyone. My trans friends hate the lobbying and aggressive accusatory tone people use to erase the word women as it makes their lives harder. Those complaining about the word women don't speak on behalf of the majority of trans people IMO.
I read a young transman saying that he felt he could more easily distance himself from the word 'woman' than words like 'menstruator' or 'bleeder' or 'uterus haver'; so 'woman' is actually much less triggering of his dyspohoria & he would prefer it to be used for products.

These are some of the people who should be listened to, not the screaming allies & woke cookie hunters.

AuroraBor · 08/05/2021 16:32

I find this really strange.
Products are marketed to different demographics all the time. Both men and women use razors but no one is calling Gillette bigots for selling razors "for men". So even under the gender ideology, what exactly is the problem with a company making sanitary products for women only?

If anything it even feels a tad bit transphobic to implie that men and non-binary people who menstruate will automatically want to use a product designed and aimed at women and will have exactly the same requirements for the product as women. It's almost as if the complainers believe that women and other people who menstruate are the same Shock

SirVixofVixHall · 09/05/2021 00:16

Pumpkin
Everyone is “non binary” .

I know I'm dragging this up, but I really have been looking for a reusable pad company that knows who women are and aren't afraid to say it. I've looked through a few but trouble is they're quite vague and there's loads of companies like this about.

If anyone could recommend, by PM if you want to avoid them being targeted that'd be great Smile

Pyewackect · 13/05/2021 09:18

Infuriating woke bollocks.

Makes you wonder why companies spend millions on marketing campaigns, branding, etc Hmm
Helleofabore · 13/05/2021 10:21

To be fair Tibtom I think when it comes to generic san pro from the supermarket, it is quite a reach to think that these companies are aiming for creating genuine 'high involvement' in their products outside of confidence that they work and price.
