Males using female products

londongirl12 · 03/05/2021 19:51

I follow Clinique on Instagram as I use their products. They have posted quite a lot recently of men using the "female" products, not the ones advertised to men. It really annoys me for a few reasons:
Can we not have our own products any more?
Are the men products actually then the same as the women's ones anyway, so it's al just a clever marketing ploy and it's all the same stuff.

This is really not a hill worth dying on, all products are the same and loads of men are really into skincare and makeup.

Trixie78 · 03/05/2021 19:56

I'm not too fussed about this. I'd have thought the smell would put most men off but whatever floats their boat.

DoYouRememberTheInnMiranda · 03/05/2021 20:00

Are you actually upset about this? There is no reason why skincare needs to be sex specific. Frankly it gives me more confidence in the products being worth using if everyone finds them helpful.
I think you're likely to be right about the marketing, perhaps with the exception of different scents for products designed for men and women, but does it really matter? Buy whichever you feel comfortable using.

Yorkterrier · 03/05/2021 20:03

WTF?

MiddleClassMother · 03/05/2021 20:04

Why does it bother you?

CorvusPurpureus · 03/05/2021 20:08

No, I think it's fine.

I just buy stuff that works & smells nice. I generally prefer deodorants marketed for men, because I like less cloying scents.

As an old goth, I'm also very accustomed to my male friends buying hair dye & make up marketed for women.

This isn't the hill to die or indeed dye on!

HandInGlove85 · 03/05/2021 20:13

DH gets bothered that I've started using some Bulldog products that he also uses (eg moisturiser) which are aimed at men. They seemed good and I thought it would be easier if we just shared the same product to minimise bathroom clutter.

His annoyance is not because I'm hogging the products - I'm the one who buys them and make sure we have enough. Rather, he seems to think that me using them will somehow make them less manly and then when he uses them maybe his bollocks will drop off or something...

altforvarmt · 03/05/2021 20:13

The daft thing was that products were considered to be "feminine", such that companies made (largely identical) products in grey packaging and marketed them as "manly".

They're just products. I'd rather men felt free to use whichever products interested them than only feel able to pick up those in grey / black / khaki packaging.

CardinalLolzy · 03/05/2021 20:15

I'm not a big fan of gendering anything unnecessarily - skincare and make up included! They're marketed towards the people who use them and who they think they can convince to use them.
I don't really care if they're male/female or masculine/feminine.

hobbyiscodefordogging · 03/05/2021 20:15

I think it's a silly thing to get annoyed about. I was using "men's" shaving foam for my legs decades ago and would have laughed if a man got annoyed and said "can't we have our own products any more"

MissBarbary · 03/05/2021 20:15

I always buy "men's" unscented anti- perspirant on the assumption (a) it's stronger and (b) I don't want my actual , very expensive perfume swamped by a £2.99 deodorant.

justawoman · 03/05/2021 20:16

I really couldn’t care less

Meh, isn't it just the same as women using men's products? Eg, I used to use men's deodorant all the time because a magazine once told me it was more effective than womens Grin

Unless you're talking about using sanitary wear then I wouldn't even blink.

brushlaptop · 03/05/2021 20:17

I think the men's stuff is generally cheaper so if they want to pay more for the women's stuff then why not but don't know why they would!

OverByYer · 03/05/2021 20:18

I really wouldn’t bother spending time thinking this one over

LadyBuffOfBuffdonia · 03/05/2021 20:23

I like the bulldog stuff too, but I find the range is a bit more limited than those aimed at women. They're not tested on animals either which is a bonus.
I get a bit miffed when DH nicks my discountinued body shop facial sunscreen. He just has no idea how much he needs and slops out a big chunk, whilst I am mentally totting up how much he's wasted.
We've also struggled to find vegan friendly products for men, so DH has started buying duplicates of things like my deodorant. Which is interesting as they obviously don't think men care about it. DH is vegan so it's important to him.
I'm fine with him sharing my things as long as he doesn't run out the bubble bath!

LadyBuffOfBuffdonia · 03/05/2021 20:26

Are men's razors actually any good? I've never got one unless you count the 19p cheap orange ones.

I'm in the market for a reusable, eco friendly one I can use without shaving foam.

Howyoudoingirl · 03/05/2021 20:27

Who really has the energy to be bothered about this?. My Son's have been using my face wash & moisturiser for years, who cares.

Sithee · 03/05/2021 20:29

I don't see the issue to be honest Confused

whensmynexthol1day · 03/05/2021 20:30

My husband wanted to buy some of the men's Clinique moisturiser in the airport and they had none. The Clinique rep told us the women's stuff was exactly the same just in different packaging (and cheaper) so it's clearly all in the marketing.

daisyjgrey · 03/05/2021 20:31

Oh my god you are being ridiculous. Fucking hell, find a better hill to die on.

SnugglySnerd · 03/05/2021 20:32

I use DH's shaving foam on my legs, he uses my hand cream. Why does it matter? It's better than having 2 lots of stuff cluttering up the bathroom.

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 03/05/2021 20:33

I've got a dollar shave club one which is good. No idea if it's eco friendly though.

Thanks, I will look into it.
