London Mayor: Khan vs Bailey

Ok, so I know most of ‘us’ are probably going to vote for Count Binface as our first choice because the whole mayoral candidate field is just so, so dismal (few notable exceptions but not realistic prospects), and there are other threads to discuss different options. I want to ask one specific question here.

Realistically either we’ll get Khan again, or Bailey. So - women of FWR - generally a naturally left leaning bunch but perpetually frustrated by so-called “progressive” parties reifying gender identity over the reality of biological sex - if you had to, if you had to, gun to your head/they’ve got your puppy held hostage and won’t release her until you answer, if you had to vote either Khan or Bailey, and you know your vote is the deciding factor, and who you vote for will definitely be the mayor for the next four years...which one? Neither is not an option, the puppy gets it.

And if Bailey (and you’re not a natural Tory) how do you feel about that?

For full disclosure am wavering over my second choice vote!

I haven't quite decided in real life but in your scenario I would go for Bailey - from his blurb he sounds like a decent bloke, he has an interesting, well rounded background and good specific policies. I am not usually a tory voter although i did vote for Thatcher in 1979 but never again since. I do feel a bit squeamish about it but I live in Islington and basically Labour need a kick up the arse and it is not good for one party to dominate in any scenario (am seriously considering v oting Con for local councillor)

flashbac · 03/05/2021 09:50

Wow, this Bailey:

www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/9-excuses-tory-candidate-shaun-13947190

Is better for women how exactly?

JackieWeaverFever · 03/05/2021 10:01

While poorly phrased he was a youth worker trying to get kids to use contraception.
Its still Shaun Bailey for me.

Sadiq is a fucking disgrace. His primary concern is his ego.
He should have spent less time wading into international politics and spending a fortune on his PR machine.

JackieWeaverFever · 03/05/2021 10:02

Also agree that London labour need a kick up the arse!

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 03/05/2021 10:05

Bailey.

Khan didn't keep his green manifesto promises and has caused nothing but chaos. Congestion charge in Central London now with shops and hospitality needing footfall?

TFL is a fucking disgrace as well.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 03/05/2021 10:06

Oh sorry, I see this is in FWR.

Ignore me.

persistentwoman · 03/05/2021 10:10

Grin ChardonnaysPetDragon

The dire state of our politicians and the myriad of reasons why is a constant source of grim fascination on FWR

blueangel19 · 03/05/2021 10:12

Bailey.

London has suffered under Khan. There is not excuses to keep him in.

sashagabadon · 03/05/2021 12:42

I think Bailey for me as I think Khan is a doom muppet but Khan will win. My young female colleague who spends a lot of time on social media is a big fan of Brian rose so he must be having some impact on Facebook etc.
My daughter is a big fan of some YouTuber called niko I think who rides around London on a bus inviting people to hop on for pizza and sets up Restuarants on the tube while live streaming. To be fair he is quite funny and seems nice.

IsadoraQuagmire · 03/05/2021 12:48

I'm voting for Shaun Bailey. I wouldn't vote Conservative (or for any of the other main parties) normally, but this seems like a two horse race, and I loathe Khan.

jay55 · 03/05/2021 14:51

I had a leaflet through from Bailey and his whole platform was a better deal for car drivers. I don't own a car and I'm not opposed to the ulez.

Cwenthryth · 03/05/2021 15:17

@ChardonnaysPetDragon don’t worry we can discuss issues other than women’s rights! Just obviously for many posters on this board women’s sex-based rights are a deal breaker.

I’m really wavering on this because I have never voted Tory, I do think Khan has failed on so many fronts. I’m still massively bummed Rory Stewart withdrew his campaign.

But voting for no-chance-of-winning candidates for both first and second choice? Yes these votes indicate to the next mayor what issues matter to voters. It also feels like abdicating the real decision....maybe it doesn’t bloody matter and both Khan and Bailey are as bad as each other.

Khan has no respect for women's sex based rights. None. And neither do Labour with the occasional individual exception.

Montygone · 03/05/2021 16:12

My plan is to spoil my ballot paper with a note that wanted to vote Labour but can’t because they don’t support women.

Cwenthryth · 03/05/2021 16:29

For the premise of the OP that’s not allowed Monty!! Khan or Bailey, or the puppy gets it!

(Obvs IRL I 100% support your plan, perhaps draw a “vote for women’s sex based rights” banner as well, and maybe a pair of tits).

Thank you. I might not touching on feminist issues here, so didn

What really gets my goat now is the promise to abolish the weekend cognition charge presented as something he will do for London after he himself introduced it. It's sheer demagoguing the issue, the way he did with the fare freeze.

Where are the trees he promised? Ha!

VladmirsPoutine · 03/05/2021 18:53

Bailey seems to me an interesting notion. He is not at all supported by his tory colleagues and is very much trying if I'd add too hard to be like them. Nothing about him is tory and I don't think the tories at large really give too many fucks currently about the London mayoral elections. Ultimately Khan will win - of course Labour need to do so much more not least for affordable housing in London. But I suspect the competition may as well have been Khan versus an empty skittles wrapper.

Walkingtheplank · 03/05/2021 18:54

Well Khan's going to win but I'm voting for Shaun Bailey. I think his experience working with young people and having had things tough himself (I think he was homeless or sofa-surfing for a while) shows that he wants to make a difference for the sake of making a difference, not just for self- promotion.

I liked his party political broadcast (cant believe I've said that!) a few weeks ago where he was sat against a sofa with a small pile of coins - what he would have had left over when he was younger. Some of that was his bus fair, some was his lunch money. Increasing the Mayors part of the council tax took away the coins that paid for his lunch. That's real life for a lot of people. I thought to myself that he really gets it.

On the other hand Khan promised trees, housing, a fares freeze - what came of those promises? I believe he would sell his own grandmother to win, and if his woke friends required it, he'd say that his grandpa was grandma now anyway.

No thanks. I think my family, especially my daughter, would be safer with Shaun Bailey.

persistentwoman · 03/05/2021 18:54

Khan is exasperating. Listening to him during the pandemic trying to answer every question in a way that blames the government and absolves him of every responsibility - even for things that he was directly responsible for. And I voted for the bloody man last time.

VladmirsPoutine · 03/05/2021 18:55

I'm no tory but I do feel very sorry for Bailey on occasion. Sort of like when toddlers try to behave like their older siblings.

persistentwoman · 03/05/2021 18:57

I've just watched Shaun Bailey's latest political broadcast and it was actually very good.

Cwenthryth · 03/05/2021 19:09

Just saw a PPB from Shaun Bailey as well (the one about crime and police numbers?). He does come across well doesn’t he.

How is he the Conservative candidate if the party doesn’t support him? How did that happen?

Just read how the supplementary voting system works - unless your second choice vote is one of the top two, it doesn’t make any actual difference.

OP posts:
ChardonnaysPetDragon · 03/05/2021 19:12

I suppose they do support him, but not too vocally, because they know he will lose and they don't want to be associated with a loss.

They did support Goldsmith last time and that didn't go well.

Porridgecake · 03/05/2021 19:14

Khan is full on TWAW and has no intention of, or interest in women's rights.

Porridgecake · 03/05/2021 19:15

Protecting women's rights that should have said.
