Murdered in broad daylight walking her dog ? Where are the vigils ? Where are the women who are 'here for all women'

Indeed.

Having said that, why don't we light candles for Julia? Nothing can bring the murdered women back, but it's symbolic, and we could do this.

I don't want to suggest anything inappropriate though.

But I feel so desperately sad and angry about this murder.

Walking her dog , like so many of us do.

I wonder whether her occupation has anything to with the silence.

A woman murdered

Because she’s not young the media haven’t pounced in it. The media and society are obsessed with murder and brutalisation of young women. Older women are murdered by men at an alarming rate but don’t attract the headlines or public outcry unfortunately.

She's not young. She was a copper. The way women's murders are reported and picked up on just reflects the society we live in. Not 'sexy' enough. It makes me sick. Sympathy for her poor family.

Yes, I wondered this, and guess it's partly because she was not 'young', and it is seen as yet another random killing of a woman by a man, nothing new.

I thought this too - but I think the case is slightly different in that she wasn’t reported missing so there was no build-up, and there is so far no clue about the perpetrator so people are not talking about male violence in the same way - though statistically it is more likely to be a male, we don’t know.

I have been really shocked by it too, poor woman.

Oh, and two days ago the Daily Mail called her 'Julia Jones' most of the day in their online header, despite knowing her name is Julia James in the main story. Pathetic. Should have been corrected in minutes.

Given she wasn't in uniform, was randomly WFH that day and walking her dog at a random time of day, I don't see how it can have been planned.

She seems like she was a lovely person and I feel incredibly sad for her family, friends, colleagues and for all the people she was helping, not to mention her poor dog. If only it could talk!

I'm not sure vigils help anyone though.

Agreed OP. I thought of her this morning when I was walking the dog alone in the forest -- and came across a lone man in full camouflage gear walking towards me .
It's hard not to be cynical about the lack of public outrage about Julia's murder - but then so many women, black teenagers and others are killed and often merit only a few paragraphs in the press.

I thought that the outrage was because a policeman (allegedly) abducted and killed her - its a very specific case. Yes this new murder is just as appalling, but possibly more of a story we've heard before, random stranger in the woods. Mind you, I bet it turns out she knows her attacker .

I agree, many people are murdered and we don’t hear about it.

Sarah everard I think had gained media traction with her disappearance, young woman, walking home, just disappeared.

That story made mainstream news, people and police out searching etc.

Then she was found, then it was a PC as suspect. All feeding into the frenzy.

A woman found dead, not such big news.

I think the fact that it was a policeman who allegedly killed Sarah was the thing that made it particularly headline hitting news.

I think a lot of women on Twitter/Instagram saw themselves in Sarah Everard, woman in her early thirties walking home in London. And social media is a big factor in getting things 'done' these days.

People are always more vocal about people they relate to aren't they?

A lot of women see themselves in Julia James. She took her dog out for a walk at 3pm.

In a poignant statement last night, Julia's family said: 'There are no words to adequately describe the void left in our lives by the death of our mum.

'She was so much to so many people; a wife, mother, daughter, nanny, sister and a friend.

'Mum was fiercely loyal, she loved with her whole heart and nothing was too much trouble for the people she cared about

Part of her work was supporting women survivors of domestic violence. I am sure I saw one paper sort of infer there might be a link.

But whoever is responsible, the idea that a woman cant take her dog for a walk in are area she is familiar with is really upsetting.

It just as bad whether it is a random stranger or some connected with her work.
