I don’t know anything about Page - I’ve only seen the name in the context of being trans, but this article contains several worrying/misleading half truths:

  • talks about ‘top surgery’ without explaining that it = mastectomy (refers to ‘removal of breast tissue instead).
  • talks about surgery as being ‘life saving’ without explaining why.
  • says that trans children aren’t being allowed to play sport and this will lead some to die - doesn’t explain why they might die, doesn’t say that they can play sport but maybe not with the sex they’d like.

@Dontforgetyourbrolly

I'm glad this person is happy in their body now .however I was confused why someone so unhappy with their appearance would become an actor , especially as the actress as she was then was in blockbuster Hollywood movies, surely that would be unnecessary torture. One part of the Oprah interview was about collapsing in a panic attack whilst wearing a dress , don't actors need to wear costumes and wear all manor of clothes on screen? How would that work as a job .

Possibly ( pure conjecture here) they felt that if they have to pretend who they are then they may as well do it for a job?

“If trans kids aren’t allowed to play sports [with the sex they choose], they will [cause themselves to] die” sounds like inciting trans kids to self-harm. It’s a threat to those safeguarding kids, and the ultimate emotional blackmail. And this message is splashed around everywhere this issue is discussed.

When is an editor going to step in and say no, that’s not a message we want to send any kids? Where is the ethical responsibility?

from current thread discussing Guardian coverage of the interview
NiceGerbil made important points which, in my opinion need wider consideration,

"The thing that has leapt out at me for ages around this, and continues to do so. In brief.. (I'll try!)

An artful lot of things with this seem to be about breasts.
Binders/ mastectomies
For males, the surgery that seems to be the main one is implants. For those on hormones like that person in the ? Telegraph, their chest growing is inordinately exciting.

What I know is that
Growth of breasts whatever age you are is the sudden point at which men start looking at you differently. Society starts treating you differently. It's when the leering starts and the ideas like you need to cover up (unspoken, because your own growing body puts you at risk). For right or wrong, that's the message. And the breasts are the most obvious thing.
Men in our society utterly fetishise breasts. That what would you do if you were opposite sex for the day, the first thing lots of men would do is play with their tits.
Breasts are to feed babies but that's really gross to much of society because they're for show for men, not for feeding.
Loads of girls have forever tried to hide their chest shape to stop the way it means they are treated.
Breast ironing is a horrendous thing that is done with the aim of holding off the behaviour of men towards girls once their bodies start developing.

So we have.
Girls especially when breasts start growing and through maybe secondary school age actively wishing they would go away.
From a practical pov even if larger they are a PITA. if you are into sport gymnastics etc they get in the way.
In general one way or another many girls and women are not keen. Ambivalent. Would be comfier in many ways without them.
Meanwhile males who are non binary/trans this seems to be a common number 1 wishlist item.

That puts it in a different context. Where do you want to be in the sex class order? Looker or lookee? Able to walk down the high street with no attention or with eyes subtly or not so subtly up and down up and down? That sort of thing.

And of course implants can be removed. A double mastectomy is a much larger operation removing healthy tissue permanently.

Finally. Why is it seen as not a big deal for girls/ women? Is it because society is used to girls and women trying to alter their bodies to fit in with the male gaze? And girls and women understanding that as they live in society too? Restrictive clothes, uncomfortable shoes. In the past foot binding tight corsetry. Having pubic hair ripped out and the idea of an appt at beautician is 'pampering'. (Yes I know some men do it too).

If you don't want the attention discomfort unpleasant things to do with breasts that happen because, men will be men. Then have them cut off.

Yes obviously some people have sex dysphoria.

This focus on the breasts for both male and female without any analysis or attempt to understand if there's something going on. It's obvious to me.

I suppose it's easier not to think about it too much?"

I can think of several lesbian friends of mine who would also have a panic attack if they had to wear a dress at all, let alone in front of millions of people. I left a job when it became apparent I was expected to wear makeup and a suit every day. The idea that kids or parents could take from this interview tha these are signs of being "born in the wrong body" is appalling

Transitioning surgery seems the same as image enhancement or weight loss surgery: for some people it will be everything they hoped, and I am always happy for them if that’s the case; however (and this is my experience from knowing people who have had such surgeries), for others it doesn’t solve the much more serious problems in their head. So while they might initially be happier following the surgery, eventually those long-term habits/behaviours and much more difficult to treat mental health problems resurface.

I hope that’s not the case here and wish Elliot Page all the best

It is rather irresponsible the way that news sources are reporting this story: i.e. having major surgery and an immensely personal and enormous decision has been flippantly reduced to a few positive soundbites. To take one such quote as an example, having major surgery carries risks that can lead to death, I am less sure about the evidence behind deaths due to trans children not being allowed to play sport; though happy to be challenged on that if someone can point me in the direction of a peer-reviewed paper on the subject.

Children identified as 'trans' are not being disallowed from playing sport. Policies are being re-established which separate some sporting opportunities for children by sex, as they were previously.

"If you're not gonna allow trans kids to play sports, children will die,"

This is what pissed me off. There is obviously a debate to be had about trans participation in sport but just shouting ‘they will die’ shuts down any discussion and refuses to accept there might be another side to the argument. It’s overly dramatic and a bullying tactic.

Binders would create more of a barrier to sports than playing in the correct sex team would.

So if trans kids don’t play sport they will die? That’s a leap

This. There are children all around the world who don’t play sport. Because they live in poverty, because their parents don’t facilitate it, because they just don’t get the opportunity, because they never find that sport they enjoy.

Yet I don’t see people worried about them dying through lack of access to sport. Nobody is setting up charities to make sure every child has access to sport and halt the death rates...

If children don’t eat, have heat, light and a home they will die. Playing sport is not an essential.

Nothing to do with being trans. It’s a fucking ridiculous statement to say children will die if they don’t play sport.

One thought I had was about the series Umbrella Academy. In that he plays a female character, what would happen in a further series?

I am going to assume the role will be recast. A transman shouldn't play the part of a woman, just as a woman shouldn't play the part of a transman or a transwoman the part of a woman or a man the part of a transwoman. Right?

It also glossed over the fact that in order to be their 'true self' Elliot Page is now going to be a lifelong medical patient.

I agree that Page did not come across as someone who has been 'liberated at last'.

Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.

Oh, bullshit. Whatever your views on trans rights, trans people aren't making a bid for world domination.

It's a tactic of narcissistic abuse to tell someone that if you don't do X, Y and Z, they'll kill themselves.

Obviously Page can't abuse a whole Oprah audience but the parallel struck me.

Incidentally, the plot of Juno, for which Page was nominated for an Oscar, entirely revolves around Page being female. It's about a teenage girl who becomes pregnant in a casual relationship, gives the baby up for adoption and then gets together properly the baby's father.

When Angelina Jolie had a double mastectomy for health reasons it was made abundantly clear to the public that this was a major operation that she needed significant recovery from. Brad Pitt, as her then partner, was cited as doing a lot to help if I recall correctly.

That bbc article is appallingly irresponsible! Oprah is an interviewer but the BBC is (or it is meant to a) a news channel. Their job is to provide facts. So include what “top surgery is”, describe what trans actually means, say there’s no evidence that any trans children have died because they were unable to play sport with the opposite sex not just just vacuously repeat unsubstantiated claims

I agree that Page did not come across as someone who has been 'liberated at last'.

Who says someone "liberated" has to be shiny and bouncy and joyous? Do people not usually emerge from massive upheaval a bit delicate and nervous?

They did address it at the end of the interview when Oprah uses the term "in progress". And I think what we were seeing felt real rather than PR'd to shit. I mean if you really listen the the life-long trauma he describes about feeling like a stranger in his own body, then factor in the fact he's making this change in the public eye, and factor in how sensitive a lot of artists/actors are anyway (even the veteran ones, I speak from experience on this) I think it's totally understandable we didn't see a "finished product" so to speak. It makes sense to me. It's a huge, huge thing - not something most of us can properly imagine. I think the issue of trans people in sports and ages of treatment and women's spaces etc are a very real issues btw but on a basic humanity level Im really glad Elliott has done the right thing for him. I was really quite shocked at the level of pain he'd obviously carried for so long. Sad I'm going to reach out to my trans friend today and check in with them. They always present everything as being smiley and sunny but I bet it isn't all the time.

It can. But that tends to stem from the abuse transgender people face. But I'm sure he is having help alongside his transition

I suggest that most of this" abuse" that you say transgender people suffer from is actually just the simple fact of people recognising the reality of sex that lies beneath all presentations, or simply questioning the trans narrative.

When everything that is not totally affirmative is translated as " abuse" it is suggestive of a very fragile ego structure. That so many fragile young people are now being presented with a narrative that includes hormones and surgery as a solution for suffering, is a deeply disturbing and concerning trend.

And if someone's mental health is totally reliant on people going along with things they know not to be true where on earth does that lead? People can be whoever they feel they are in their own minds, but the wider world of people and social life is a negotiation.
