I've been inspired by another poster's inclusion of a modern day hero in a thread.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sabrina_Cohen-Hatton
I'm a teacher currently on maternity leave and would like to do a 'hero a day' when I go back. I'll put the resource on tes as well so others can share it when I have a full set.
I need 200 inspiring people for the list. I'd like it to be representative of society. Obviously at least 50 percent women. At least 20% non white ethnicity and at least 20% disabled.
Ideally I would like people still alive, as I think there are enough lists about inspiring dead people. I'd like it to be the challenge to Kardashian and influencer culture.
I figured I will get some good suggestions on the feminist board. Kardashian's need not apply.

Dr Kate Granger. She was diagnosed with cancer but campaigned for better communication by hospitals, completed her training, started the "Hello my name is" campaign, wrote two books for doctors about being on the other side of the doctor/patient divide, raised £250,000 for charity and left behind her a NHS reward for compassionate care.

WarOnWomen · 28/04/2021 20:58

@LadyBuffOfBuffdonia

I've seen upper Key Stage 2 do Talking Turkeys by Benjamin Zephaniah, so perhaps an abridged version that leaves out the crime would be ok.

Generally people have to be squeaky clean in primary though, in case the children look them up.

I thought of him too but BZ admitted to hitting his ex.

Sacagawea? She was Lewis & Clark’s guide.

Eunice Carter and Mabel Walker Willebrandt whose work actually put Al Capone in jail.

Floella Benjamin for everything she has done.

Josephine Baker is a great story. I've been listening to the You're Dead To Me podcast on bbc sounds and there's some really interesting stuff.

HopeClearwater · 28/04/2021 23:23

Baroness Amos

Diane Abbott - no kidding here, you have to be seriously intelligent to do what she’s done.

Vera Brittain

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 28/04/2021 23:32

Onjali Rauf, children's author and founder of a women's charity

But it's possible that the focus of her charity would be a bit too heavy for the age group you're teaching.

WarProf · 29/04/2021 09:23

Jade Statt, co-founder of StreetVet, the charity that provides medical care for homeless people's pets www.cambridge-news.co.uk/news/cambridge-news/street-vet-homeless-peoples-dogs-14069167

For schools, Maggie Aderin Pocock is brilliant because she is quite dyslexic and has achieved so much. My dyslexic DD found her quite inspiring.
