No no - Nazanin another year??

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe had been given another year for 'propaganda against the regime' - supposedly she attended a rally in London 12 years ago.

Why has the regime got it in for her so very badly? What is there to gain? My heart is aching for poor Gabrielle.

I can't believe that Iran got elected to the UN's Commission on the Status of Women this week.

They didn't even release Nazanin to get it.

AssassinatedBeauty · 26/04/2021 15:57

It's not about her specifically, it's about the fact that she is a bargaining tool to use against the UK to put pressure on the govt. I fear she may simply face another invented charge at the end of the 1 year period, even if she is released. The fact that they are requiring her to stay in Iran for a year after this next sentence gives them plenty of time to come up with something else to charge her with. Poor Nazanin, and her husband and daughter.

Fnib · 26/04/2021 15:58

Poor, poor woman!

ErrolTheDragon · 26/04/2021 15:58

Bloody hell. Poor woman, and poor child and husband.

As far as I can make out, what they have to gain is the refund for the military equipment they paid for but didn't get... which as far as I can make out is an acknowledged debt which the U.K. government would be a lot more likely to pay if the Iranian government wasn't playing this bloody stupid game of effectively holding her hostage. Maybe I'm missing something or oversimplifying but that's what seems to be happening.

The UN is an absolute joke.

This is disgusting. I think you might be right, AssassinatedBeauty.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 26/04/2021 16:10

I know they are owed hundreds of millions (and this was with the Shah regime so not exactly recently) - but god help us, she is a pawn.

This is more likely to make the government dig in its heels rather than lay back to debt. Iran is on its knees with the pandemic and sanctions but its seriously lost its face with this (and other things I can’t even begin to think about right now).

This is shocking and cruel news. This just keeps going on and on. I cannot believe they are forcing the issue after it was perceived that she was so close to freedom.

WTAF?

BraveBananaBadge · 26/04/2021 16:18

I really fear for her this time. The poor woman has been through so much.

ArabellaScott · 26/04/2021 16:19

I can't believe that Iran got elected to the UN's Commission on the Status of Women this week.

Fuck. This is so awful.

ValancyRedfern · 26/04/2021 16:23

I don't believe they will ever let her go. There will always be a new charge. I can't bear to think of it.

ArabellaScott · 26/04/2021 16:26

Surely to god the govt can put pressure on them to release her?

ArabellaScott · 26/04/2021 16:28

She is quite likely to kill herself in prison. Then they lose their pawn. And a child loses her mother.

How can they think this is a good strategy? Or is it just that they think a woman is disposable? It just seems calculated, callous cruelty to me.

thirdfiddle · 26/04/2021 16:33

Not surprising but so upsetting.

Gunpowder · 26/04/2021 16:37

Sad I was so sad to read this. It’s outrageous. Poor family.

AssassinatedBeauty · 26/04/2021 16:44

I wonder if there is any hope that this might be house arrest rather than being sent back to prison? It really is such an inhuman act.

Tiredmum100 · 26/04/2021 16:46

I have been following her story for years. Its absolutely heart breaking how she's been treated. I feel so sorry for her husband and daughter. I dont know why the British government are doing more to get her home?

persistentwoman · 26/04/2021 16:48

It feels so hopeless for her doesn't it?

Gunpowder · 26/04/2021 16:51

I understand diplomacy isn’t simple but they should absolutely do more, particularly given it’s partly Johnson’s fault she’s there (or still there).

porridgecake · 26/04/2021 16:52

It is sheer cruelty. I remember reading that she wanted to have another child. That won't happen now. It is an extra punishment, just out of vindictiveness. Stupid Boris Johnson made everything much worse for her.
Poor family.

CatChant · 26/04/2021 17:07

I am so, so sorry for Nazanin, her little girl and her husband. She is nothing but a helpless pawn in a spiteful political game and the government doesn't seem to care at all.

andyoldlabour · 26/04/2021 17:10

It is a horrible situation for Nazanin and her family to be in, but I really believe that if we pay back the money we have stolen from Iran then they will release her and others. Even people in Iran who do not like the regime want to see the UK pay this debt.

Me too, she needs very badly to come home and be cared for. She needs therapy for the trauma she has already endured. I do hope the year travel ban doesn't mean after the sentence is completed.
toffeebutterpopcorn · 26/04/2021 18:09

I am really hoping they don’t call her back to jail and say ‘go and never return!’ (as is she ever would). Sad as it means she probably won’t ever see her family in Iran face to face again

I think it's pathetic that we constantly come up with excuses for not paying the debt that we acknowledge we owe. There's £400m at stake here, so Iran will happily play games for as long as it takes. We're claiming that we can't pay the debt because it would breach trade sanctions, so the regime constantly comes up with excuses for not releasing Nazanin. We wrote the sanctions - why we can't re-write them to exclude historical debts is beyond me. Yes, we don't want to signal support for the regime, but we cannot acquire a reputation for not paying legitimate debts.
