Worth sharing with any detransitioners in your life.

There's a pattern to what caused them to id as trans:

  1. Talia: the online trans
    community, who enabled my
    feelings of self-hatred and led
    me to believe that transitioning
was the cure to all my
    problems.

  2. Brit: Society said I needed to be
XYZ in order to be a woman,
and I was none of those things

  3. Carol: At school
kids made fun of me for acting
like a boy. I was told the way
I was wrong, that I needed to
    behave like a girl.

  4. . Keira: I was
    missing role models and a
    sense of community as a
    gender nonconforming girl. I
    was missing education about
    my female body.

  5. my dysphoria
    stemmed from trauma and
    internalised homophobia

.....
common factors:

a) homophobia / lesbophobia online, in school and society
b) harmful gender stereotypes and roles combined with a lack of education
c) online trans community leading gender non conforming kids to believe they are trans
d) Absence of lesbian / gender non conforming community

in the 70's, 80's and 90's there were communities for young people to turn to but in the 00's and 10's they have been dismantled and replaced by male owned online platforms who de-platform women. Gender non conforming girls are led to believe they are trans online, bullied at school and have no female owned community tell them that it's ok, it's normal, we have always existed.

Excellent post find.

Detransitioning because of transphobia is a straw man argument. The reasons for transitioning in the first place are the issue.

We live in a really heterosexual and also sexist world.

I watched Sense8 a number of years ago and the overriding memory of the lesbians in it are either a very pretty, gender conforming semi heroine (her sexy, clever at IT tech trans partner is 'more' in the story,) or her butch friends who don't accept her trans partner and are depicted briefly as boring and inconsequential.

On lesbian visibility day even lesbians haven't been allowed 'to lesbian' without adding lgbtq+ and nb as well.

Which might mean going deeper than XX and XY.

I know understand this comment better after seeing this same poster state on another thread that they believe trans will be declared a DSD in the future. It puts a great deal of their posts on DSDs into perspective.

After seeing a few other things floating around, I wouldn't be surprised.

There is a pattern that emerges sometimes, where the discrimination against young female transitioners becomes apparent. This booklet is good at highlighting that.

This discrimination shows in the lack of concern, or even acknowledgement, of the significant health risks that female transitioners experience vs those of males. (This booklet does touch on those I notice).

It shows in the lack of being able to acknowledge the differences in the past cohorts of transitioners and the cohort today which for young people has a skew towards the majority being female.

It shows in the lack of questions being asked and thoroughly studied as to why this change in demographic is occurring. And it shows in the lack of discussion and research, whether forced lack or simply the lack through lax procedures.

The discrimination against female transitioners is appalling when you see it. But it is so clear when you start reading widely. Everyone perpetuating the ‘most vulnerable’ mantras actually miss the fact that again young women and girls are again forgotten. They are the ‘invisible women’ in that health sector.

That is why mantras like this don’t work.

The mantras are hiding the sexist discrimination of females that exists within the community itself.

Changing the language definitions has the effect of hiding their needs by grouping these females needs with the males they identify with. But with all the focus being on the transwomen, who is fighting for the needs of these females? I rarely see a post by a male that highlights the plight of transmen with any real understanding or empathy.

So true. Misogyny runs deep.

Great posts Helleofabore & FindTheTruth
It's hard to watch what is happening to many girls and young woman as they struggle to navigate our sexist and sexualised world. Getting caught up in an ideology where so much harm is done to their bodies Sad

Helleofabore · 29/04/2021 08:25

Unfortunately, posters with agendas that are biased in the support of male transition/detransitioners seem to have a tendency to minimize the female transition/detransition stories. As you would expect, they are heavily invested in their own experience and making sense of it.

However, it is always important to acknowledge this and if you are talking about the wider group, understand your biases.

Enough4me · 29/04/2021 23:07

I haven't heard about transmen (genetic females) threatening to physically hurt women (genetic females) who express the view that women are genetic females either.

I believe that GNC female girls and teens are facing unprecedented discrimination; online, in school, by society, by MSM and most of all by "LGBT*" groups. And are there any butch girls who haven't been told they're trans online, at school and especially in an LGBT group? I wonder if the people doing this can be challenged legally under the EA . . .

rogdmum has just posted some really interesting survey results .

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4232623-Survey-on-Detransitioners-by-Post-Trans?watched=1&msgid=106945251#106945251

the article is here:

www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/00918369.2021.1919479

Although it is a very small survey and international, so a wide focus, the results do tend to back up some of the points in this booklet too.

I hope that this will lead to more research being invested in.

What is very apparent though, and as expected with the recentness of the huge increases in young females transitioning, a couple of points from this survey confirm that the survey from 2015 is really not appropriate to use as a description tool for the current cohort of detransitioners.

a) the vast majority of those who answered the survey were female detransitioners
b) the average transition duration was only 4.55 years for these females.

Therefore, as this questionnaire was in 2019, I doubt that the study posted upthread is very relevant at all to do with the majority of the detransitioners of the past few years. They both are important, but it is vital to acknowledge that the demographic of detransitioners in the UK is most likely significantly different.

To continue with the narrative being pushed by some posters based on data from US surveys now 6 years old is harmful to those detransitioning right now and in the near future.

WarriorN · 30/04/2021 18:42

Thanks Helle, was about to link too.

WarriorN · 30/04/2021 18:44

Helle, it's feels like these are the beginnings of detrans of the wave of ROGD among girls.

Agree @Helleofabore

On a more positive note, there are noises for indepth research, support, an established care model and a desire to make the world a better place for detransitioned people. At the moment it all seems to be grass roots. I wonder if the Cass review will lead to some UK support.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 30/04/2021 19:02

i bought this, just because I was interested to hear the stories and to support the authors. I am glad I did.

Just reading this beautiful thread by Watson who says she could have avoided transition regret if the gender clinic hadn't affirmed her
