Help me write to school about this LGBT+inclusion homework

I've just been checking through my year 7 daughter's homework and found this survey. It's optional. I am really passed off about it as the possible answers are not even correct in some cases. Dd had to ask Alexa the answers so god knows what ages answered but essentially she didn't understand what she was being asked. She's very scientific minded and as GC as a 12 year old can be I think. Her 14 year old sister doesn't get it either. I'm not sure I can attach all the screenshots so might have to put them in a collage.

I’d tick other. No such thing. Or I don’t know don’t care. But I’m not 12. So just I don’t know.

Tibtom · 25/04/2021 09:46

Question 4 is other: someone with a variations in their sexual characteristics (DSD) - they are all either male or female though it may take additional testing to determine this.

Aprilfoolaround · 25/04/2021 09:47

They have lgbt+ month every year so ticking other is likely to get them to step up their "education."

  1. Socially constructed roles.
Sittinonthesand · 25/04/2021 09:49

It looks like a (quite literally) box ticking task so that the school can say they’ve ‘done’ it. Quickly prepared and with little thought. Just tick I don’t know.

Tibtom · 25/04/2021 09:49

May be include a link to eg DSD families?

AssassinatedBeauty · 25/04/2021 09:50

What an odd set of questions to ask about the "LGBT+ community". It seems all about the T with a couple of questions about the B and absolutely nothing to do with being L or G.

Sittinonthesand · 25/04/2021 09:51

Good idea to use ‘other’ - is it anonymous?

Sittinonthesand · 25/04/2021 09:51

Whe I was that age I’d have written ‘why are we being taught this’ or deliberately written stupid answers.

VoluminousVagina · 25/04/2021 09:53

Oh dear - the available answers for Q. 1 are soo far off the mark it is quite horrifying that the school is using this resource.

Do you know which organisation has provided this material? From what you’ve shared I’m guessing that none of it is in line with the government policy regarding RSE content and providers.

I would write to the governors and Head and express your concerns that they are using a provider that doesn’t confirm to the DoE guidelines. Safe Schools Alliance has more help on how to do this.

Aprilfoolaround · 25/04/2021 10:04

Good point about the lack of L and G in this. So many students are saying they are Bi and from age 11 too. Why does everyone have to be labelled so young these days? I've overheard some interesting conversations and it's like they feel they have to choose from a menu and hope they've chosen the right one. Children are under so much pressure as it is, just let them come to their own conclusions as they mature and share if they want to.

This is not 'homework' though is it
If it's optional I would think the best thing to do is ignore it altogether

Leafstamp · 25/04/2021 10:20

It’s a homework task. No homework tasks are legally enforceable. The fact that it’s been set as a task by school means the content should be accurate, and not exclude the more commonly found categories of LGBT.
Woofsaidtheladybird · 25/04/2021 10:21

Ggrrr 'Intersex' (and calling it that is another movement altogether) categorically does NOT belong in the LGBTQ discussion. Wrong terminology. DSD or VSD.
If it was me I'd email the school, but only because I'm involved in the support group mentioned above.
If it's optional, I wouldn't do it.

murmurflation · 25/04/2021 10:25

Does this have correct answers? Or is the idea to find out the kids' current knowledge, to base future lessons on? Because best case scenario, the answer to the above questions is 'other' and further discussion in class.

GNCQ · 25/04/2021 10:26

Yeah intersex has nothing to do with
a) gender, or b)LGBT.
I'd ignore it and explain why in an email to the head (conflation of terms/safeguarding reasons).

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 25/04/2021 10:31

Safe Schools Alliance have a pile of templates you may be able to adapt?

safeschoolsallianceuk.net/resources-2/letter-templates/

GNCQ · 25/04/2021 10:32

^Sorry I only mentioned the intersex question because that is most infuriating, but asking an 11 year old about "pansexuality" and genders etc is basically assuming they adhere to gender ideology, which they might not.

It's like asking a non-religious person if they love Jesus and to rate how much, without a "non-religious" option.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 25/04/2021 10:33

I’d tick other and elaborate. Oh yes, I’d elaborate like a good un.

ValancyRedfern · 25/04/2021 10:39

This is awful. The questions contradict each other as well. I assume the 'correct' answer to the gender question is 'socially constructed roles/identity' but then a later question talks about 'gender at birth'. I think this is being used as a baseline assessment. They will then teach the kids all about the wonderful world of gender identity and get them to repeat the survey at the end, to show they have been 'educated'. I'd complain. Has your dad's school done a parent rse consultation yet? Every school needs to do one before Sept.

WarriorN · 25/04/2021 10:43

I bet they're starting a quality mark of some sort and are surveying "understanding" among the school community.

Ffs.

I'd definitely query this.
