I would love to hear some recommendations. In normal times I go to quite a lot of spoken word events.

Have you come across @Aja02537920 on Twitter? Amazing.

houseonthehill · 08/04/2021 21:32

A great place to start would be to get the anthology 'Hallelujah for 50 foot Women' (Bloodaxe), and then follow up poets you like. There's also the #MeToo anthology (Fairacre Press) and Bloody Amazing (Yaffle Press, I think) and do the same.

Adrienne Rich, Diving into the Wreck, was magnificent

Carol Ann Duffy - especially her book The World's Wife

Maybe some of these are not especially 'feminist' poets, but they often centre the female experience.

Good point Arabella, one of my favourites locally is a softly spoken lesbian in her late 50s/60s ish. Not obviously feminist but definitely centring the female experience.

I have Carole Ann Duffy’s book Feminine Gospels obv written rather then spoken but it’s a nice one to dip into and then ponder awhile

JellySlice · 08/04/2021 21:57

Jenny Lindsay and Hollie McNish's performed poems are fabulous! I've not come across them before. For me a spoken poem has to be performed. I cannot listen to someone just reading a poem, even if it is the author herself. The experience of the poem has to enhance it, otherwise I'd rather read it myself.

PineappleCakes · 08/04/2021 22:06

Thank you all for the suggestions, poetry on FWR has made my day.

Another recommendation for Jenny Lindsay - fab poet and wonderful person!

Floisme · 08/04/2021 22:28

Maybe we could start an ABC of our favourite women poets:
Maya Angelou
Pam Ayres....

Terranean · 08/04/2021 22:29

loveyouradvice · 08/04/2021 22:34

Carol Ann Duffy - especially her book The World's Wife so agree

And big fan of Aja since this morning.... loved listening to her and reading her words, loved her youth and vitality, being black lesbian and out there.

loveyouradvice · 08/04/2021 22:36

Aja's poem so strong and deeply moving - worth just two minutes of your life - do find on twitter above.

Cowbells · 08/04/2021 22:45

Maya Angelou. Still I Rise is a black feminist poem which is so powerful that every time I hear it or read it, it gives me goosebumps. It's so brilliant. Hearing her read it is even better. It's like an injection of power.
