I would love to hear some recommendations. In normal times I go to quite a lot of spoken word events.

Oooh I came on to say The World's Wife, we studied it at A Level and I loved it, glad it's already been mentioned

RabbitOfCaerbannog · 08/04/2021 23:39

Dorothy Parker

ErrolTheDragon · 08/04/2021 23:40

Thanks for this thread, I didn't bring my headphones to bed so will have to wait to listen to most of these.

I'd been thinking of starting a 'poetry corner' but in the quieter backwater of Feminist Book Club.

felulageller · 09/04/2021 16:43

I loved a poetry book I read by Erica Jong.

OhDear2200 · 09/04/2021 17:09

@Cowbells wow! Fabulous

IDontOnlyLikeJazzFunk · 09/04/2021 17:18

Rachel Rooney has got a new teen coming of age book that will be published in August. It is a collection of poems called 'Hey Girl'.

She is also the author of 'My Body is Me' aimed at smaller children and has been 'cancelled' and heaped with abuse for her lovely work about kids being happy in themselves.

Isn't she magnificent?

ArabellaScott · 09/04/2021 17:23

Oh, fab, IDontOnly. Loved her kids' book 'a patch of black', too.

Errol, I'll be there if you start one!

@loveyouradvice

Aja's poem so strong and deeply moving - worth just two minutes of your life - do find on twitter above.
Give it a miss - two tedious minutes of grotesque transphobia, in which she associates trans women with sexual predators and abusers (yawn), then goes on to mock trans women for their appearance (hardly feminist is it - mocking people based on their appearance?)

If you want to hear some really powerful, truly feminist poetry, try Kae Tempest - one of the greatest poets of their generation, here reciting the profound story of a woman who stands up against a sexual assault.

CAUTION, THIS POEM CONTAINS GRAPHIC DESCRIPTIONS OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE:

Another vote for Aja. I can't stop watching it.

This is powerful. 'I think she was a she' by Leyla Josephine.

NRCS · 09/04/2021 21:16

I loved Aja's poem. really sums up how I feel now after years of TRA abuse and c and t slurs. Such a shame as originally I was completely on board with the be kind to old school transexuals thing. Great to see.

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 09/04/2021 21:17

Aja utterly rocks.

ArabellaScott · 09/04/2021 21:29

Aja is fab. I hope she writes more.

HermitsLife · 09/04/2021 21:35

Thanks for this great thread, I'm not usually interested in poetry but some of these seem really interesting and I always have time for Maya Angelou.

I will give them a listen tomorrow.

MenopausalCrone · 09/04/2021 22:29

This always gives me chills (and thrills)

Suzanne Moore tweeted this poem recently.

That Tishani Doshi poem is phenomenal. Thanks, SirVix.

NonnyMouse1337 · 10/04/2021 04:23

Cowbells that poem really comes to life by Maya Angelou. Thanks for sharing.

Aja's poem was amazing. Wonderfully direct and unapologetic. ❤️

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/04/2021 09:14

Aja is fab. I hope she writes more.

If you visit her on Twitter she posted another amazing poem late last year.

A friend commented that Aja reminds her a bit of Magdalen Berns. I can definitely see that.
MsMcWibble · 10/04/2021 12:48

Love Aja's poem.
This one by Irischild is an absolute classic.
'Menstruator and other words that rhyme with hate her'
irischild.blogspot.com/2018/03/menstruator-and-other-words-that-rhyme.html?m=1

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 10/04/2021 12:56

How could I have forgotten Irischild?

ArabellaScott · 10/04/2021 14:30

I just found my poster from 'A Radical Notion' that is that very Iris Child poem!
