What's with the infantilising of women's nightwear?

I was just looking for a nightdress (peri menopausal and completely unable to wear pyjamas any more because I'm so bloody hot at night Sad) on M and S (never again). I was struck by all the Disney bloody characters? I'm not 5yrs old, I don't want to wear Disney characters. Out of interest I had a look at the men's. No Disney, no cutesie stuff, just very normal (if boring) pyjamas. So what's that all about?

It is in men's clothes too. So many mens PJ's with Disney or other cartoon characters on. What a turn off.

So take it off before yo have sex 😉

I should be so lucky as to have an offer from a man dressed up as a marvel superhero for the night.

Grin Turn the light off lol

Cath Kidston is a young teen brand. Most people I know buy stuff from there for kids or teens.
It really isn’t!
PurpleDaisies · 08/04/2021 22:55

Having tried to find nightwear recently, I’m genuinely a bit aghast at the ‘I don’t understand why you can’t just wear Frozen nightshirts’ argument. I’m a grown woman with zero interest in cartoons.

People aren’t saying that. People are disputing that all you can buy is Disney nightwear.

It’s like when I want to buy running shoes and every fucking pair of women’s trainers are pink or lilac. It’s needless feminisation of products and I hate it.

You need to get better at google.

Helias · 08/04/2021 22:58

Amazing responses here for a board that is supposed to be for "feminist topics", e.g. Because it’s seen as more feminine and more females tend to buy them? I’m happy to wear stuff with bambi or dumbo characters, my oh wouldn’t though. It’s not hard to figure out. Hmm

On a practical note, OP, I'm not sure why you got so many recs for/comments about pyjamas when you specifically said you can't wear them. I was looking for above-the-knee-but-not-indecent sleeveless plain white or pastel cotton nightdresses for my mother - like you, she was thinking M&S because her threadbare standbys were from them, but even their plain options for the most part had uncomfortable trim and embroidery. We found what we needed at John Lewis.

ChrissyPlummer · 08/04/2021 23:02

I got some nice lemon-print pj’s with shorts & leggings from Sainsbury’s last year. Also got blue shorts with rainbows on. You can buy separates in Asda too. They have plenty of other designs that aren’t cartoons.

Cath Kidston is absolutely not a young teen brand. I've got several Cath Kidston pyjamas. I'm 61. Cath Kidston also do nice 1940s and 50s style dresses for women.

Agreed re needing to get better at Google. Why do posters post such patent nonsense?

NiceGerbil · 08/04/2021 23:10

Helias often people don't look at which board it is before contributing.

Also got to say that if most women think OP is not talking sense then why shouldn't they say so?

I'm more than happy to discuss with OP and others and have put a few thoughts down.

I've mentioned the difference between boys and girls sleep shorts a few times, but no one's really engaged with that.

Marguerite2000 · 08/04/2021 23:10

I don't like Disney myself, but don't care if others do. Nightclothes are for wearing in the privacy of the home in front of family, that's probably why there's so much choice. People don't have to worry about looking silly or scruffy or whatever when they're relaxing in their own homes, they can wear whatever they want.

LibertyMole · 08/04/2021 23:11

Why is that an amazing response? Feminists are not unaware that masculinity and femininity exist, or that women are more likely to choose feminine options and men masculine ones.

Are you amazed every time you go outside and find that men usually wear trousers?

EloquentlyBrash · 08/04/2021 23:12

Oh please get a grip. Some people like Disney and it is not infantilising... if you don’t like it find something else.

NiceGerbil · 08/04/2021 23:14

Dunno about the Google thing

I spend ages hunting and often not much luck

The thing that I also don't like (Amazon) is that when you put in girls sleepwear or knickers or whatever there's always 'sexy' grown up stuff in there. I know it's because the seller has included certain keywords etc but your sitting there with your 8yo googling clothes for them and there's hyprrsexualised pics coming up. This is particularly bad when looking for female superhero costumes!

Troyhelena · 08/04/2021 23:15

Yabu to make it a feminist issue but yanbu for having your own taste in pjs.
Personally I only want ‘childish’ pyjamas- I love the cartoons and colours and slogans! I don’t own any that are just plain with nothing Disney on

HopeClearwater · 08/04/2021 23:17

if you don’t like it find something else

That’s the point of the OP. There’s sweet FA else. As a pp said so eloquently, it’s Disney, granny or flammable.

PurpleDaisies · 08/04/2021 23:17

Were you looking for running trainers too or are you talking about nightwear?

PurpleDaisies · 08/04/2021 23:18

But that’s just nonsense.

PurpleDaisies · 08/04/2021 23:19

Have I missed something and all these Disney nightclothes are made of pure cotton?

NiceGerbil · 08/04/2021 23:20

Oh general stuff for the girls mainly. And me as well. Clothes. It was a passing comment.

HopeClearwater · 08/04/2021 23:20

Ha. Women’s clothes marketed to girls and girls’ clothes marketed to women. It most definitely is a feminist issue.

Quaagars · 08/04/2021 23:23

As a pp said so eloquently, it’s Disney, granny or flammable.

That's not true, there's plenty of choice out there if you look.
I've got a lovely purple striped nightie.
Neither Disney, or granny, and 100% cotton as my skin doesn't cope with anything that's not cotton.
Yes, there's lots of Disney stuff too but that's because a lot of adults like Disney.

PurpleDaisies · 08/04/2021 23:24

@NiceGerbil

I agree that gendered children’s clothing is an issue. Also children’s toys, books etc... This thread is talking about adult clothing.

There are plenty of non-pink, non-slogan options for women’s clothing.

NiceGerbil · 08/04/2021 23:24

I've mentioned a few times but I really don't understand why with girls clothes they are often so skimpy even for ages like 8. Also not as good quality as the boys stuff.

Mine had a mix of boys and girls stuff.

I've mentioned shorts about 6 times on this thread so why not mention it again!

LibertyMole · 08/04/2021 23:28

M&S do sell skimpy pj shorts for men. I bought them for my dad after his thigh operation.

I agree though about men’s shorts being longer. I think they are ugly though.
