Gender Recognition Certificate for a fiver

Very surprised by this as I thought the GRA inquiry was still ongoing. I think this is disappointing. So now you can change a few documents, 'live as a woman (man), pay a fiver and voila you are recognised as the opposite sex.

A step in the wrong direction. I am wondering whats happening with the inquiry, the oral evidence of the women's groups due in April is no longer listed.

I think this is a good idea. It demonstrates that the government listens to both sides. It won't cost the country much money, even if we say 1000 GRCs a year they only lose £135,000 which is miniscule in the context of the UK finances. It was means tested anyway. But the process still remains, which protects women's spaces (or it would, if people understood the law......)

nauticant · 08/04/2021 13:57

I agree, it means that TRAs will have to shift their campaigning onto what they really want, that is the removal of all medical gatekeeping, rather than doing pretendy campaigning about how there's a financial obstacle many are unable to overcome.

Fine, campaign on the basis of medical gatekeeping and see whether that will get the public on side.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 08/04/2021 14:44

Yes I agree. There is nothing to hide behind. Let the public see what they are demanding.

MichelleofzeResistance · 08/04/2021 14:49

If the govt are prepared to cover the admin fee, fine. It's better than most people get with average legal docs, passports etc.

Hand them out like smarties for all I care, just protect and insist everyone respects the single sex spaces and exemptions for the females who need them and there's no problem.

Albeit, if the GRC hadn't been created in the first place as a homophobic response to a separate problem, female people wouldn't now be having to struggle to be heard and have their needs met in a society where all respect for single sex needs and spaces has been lost because a woman is anyone who chooses the label.

Fantastic response from Lachlan Stewart.

twitter.com/Lachlan_Edi/status/1380050839629406209?s=20

Citizen Naturalisation £1330
Indefinite Leave to Remain £2389
Settlement Visa £1523
Leave to Remain £1033
Visitor Extension £993
Priority Service £800

But a free update to driving license, £40 for a deed poll and £5 to change legal sex is a significant barrier, eh Nancy?

If you're newly bemoaning the administrative fees now payable for gender recognition but still not saying anything about fees paid by immigrants and their families, including L,G,B & T immigrants, then I get to call you what you are: entitled and maybe a bit racist, Nancy.

To get a job you need to prove you have the right to work in UK. That usually means a passport costing £75.50 or a Certificate of Entitlement costing £388.

The principle of charging fees to uphold civil or administrative rights is arguable but please let's keep it proportionate.

To put the new gender recognition administration fee in its proper context.

It's half of what people pay for life saving prescription medication, with more or le the same means tested exemptions.

Youd have thought that would be welcomed, but no.

PotholeHellhole · 08/04/2021 15:18

Lachlan's not wrong.

We have children born in the UK, who'd spent their whole lives here, who were having to pay over a thousand pounds to access their legal right (on account of being born here and living their lives here) to British citizenship. And they were finding this out as part of preparing for school trips.

@Changemusthappe

My very reliable source tell me the oral evidence is still being heard on 21st. The event and invitees will be published on 13th.

happydappy2 · 08/04/2021 16:44

It is indefensible that the government are giving males, legal classification of females.....give them legal status as trans women! (Or something else that I can't put here.)

This sexist bullshit cannot last much longer. Why does society have such a problem with effeminate men?

MrsSteveMcDonald · 08/04/2021 16:57

Trans people already go through a much less traumatic process to get a GRC than disabled people do to get their PIP. Added to that, trans people only need to do this once but people with permanent disabilities have to keep going through the process over and over throughout their lives to prove to the government that they haven't suddenly had a magical cure.

Changemusthappen · 08/04/2021 17:08

Thanks @Leafstamp, I must admit I was concerned when I saw it had gone as I was sure it had the names of those participating too. I'll keep a look out for it.

Less than the cost of a flat white, avocado toast and a pot of beard glitter.

But as it is a such a nominal fee, they may as well have no fee at all. Makes no sense.

Fallingirl · 08/04/2021 17:16

Aren't penises just magical? Swing your dick about over women’s rights and “poof”, they are all gone. Magic. Yours for a fiver.

that's a relief. Keep us posted if you can Leafstamp - just keeping everything crossed they choose actual feminist groups that speak for actual women.

Apparently they have people within the GEO currently doing end user research/requirements gathering to look at how they are going to improve things and how trans people want it to work. They do seem to be keen to move this forward. Some twitterers are saying that they want a refund for GRCs already issued.

Alex2112 · 08/04/2021 17:28

Just insane that anyone can getting a GRC thinks they have a right to use female only spaces.

A piece of paper does not change biological sex.
I am intersex, and took my driving test at age of 17, when I was living as female, my original driving licence stated female.

I lived as male from age 19, changed licence to male, easily, (was 1970's) recently changed address, and got new driving licence from DVLA, new one arrived with Female on, now they state I require a GRC to get it changed. I have switched biological sex for records at age 9, and 19. this stuff should record biological sex, NOT a feeling. and Should reflect birth sex, OR in intersex instances the sex they live as with medical assistance et cetera.

It is not for healthy men to invade female only spaces, however they dress. Surely common sense should prevail.

GRC is not a play thing for "trans women" to use to try to validate their belief that they are women.

The world is going even more mad than before.

FACTS :

  • Biological sex change is impossible
  • A XY male, born with testes and penis, cannot become a biological female.
  • ANY amount of legislation or paperwork does not magically change peoples biological gender.
  • ALL humans have equal rights.

an admin fee for any such documentation makes sense. BUT crazy for this as the "certificate" is meaningless and a joke.

A birth certificate IS a copy of the registration of a live human birth and records the biological sex. In the past it could an amended cert was available for intersex conditions.
