I have just pre-ordered this. It looks really interesting and is endorsed by Jenni Murray amongst others. I think there is also the chance of a fund to try to get copies out to MPs etc. I am certain it will be worth a read. It would also be good if people could try to order it via libraries so that there are copies bought into local branches.

Helen Joyce talks to Andrew Doyle on the Free Speech Nation podcast.

Have bought and just reading David Aaronovitch review - have learnt that this from review and blood is boiling already.

“‘A level playing field is a fallacy,’ says Dr Myron Genel, Yale professor emeritus of pediatric endocrinology. He is a member of the International Olympic Committee’s medical commission on issues regarding gender identity in athletics. “There’s so many other factors that may provide a competitive advantage,” Genel says. “It’s very hard to single out sex as the only one.” Look at the stats, Myron, for heaven’s sake."

Googled Dr Myron Genel and he looks like an arrogant Commander from Gilead. Slow hand clap for the man who destroyed women's sports. Angry

Review

David A is getting some abuse on Twitter for this review. Well done him for speaking out.

For me, it's currently showing as number 14 on the bestseller list:
www.amazon.co.uk/best-sellers-books-Amazon/zgbs/books/?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Given that everything else around it is basically summer beach reading, that's pretty phenomenal.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 17/07/2021 20:00

Hahaha do not mess with Helen. She will sue

I’m going to get mine from my local Waterstones I think. I want them to see that people are buying it.

And Troubled Blood is (still) at number 24 Grin
MrsOvertonsWindow · 17/07/2021 21:12

I've just started reading this and it is so interesting. Well written, easy to follow and I've already learnt so much about the history.
And good for Helen for threatening to sue the zealots who lie and smear and slander in order to silence women. No more!
This is a really good conversation. It's a long video but the length allows them to discuss all the main points in the book.

That’s Amazon UK. It’s doing even better in the US.
Mollyollydolly · 17/07/2021 22:09

They've sold out of hardbacks last time I looked on Amazon UK and not available in many Waterstones apparently. Whether they didn't order enough stock or it's deliberate I don't know.

Maybeone · 17/07/2021 22:12

@hoteltango

I've pre-ordered the kindle version.

If I can think of a way of donating this (and other similar books) to my local library but anonymously, I'll get a print copy as well.

Just ask them to order it in
Mollyollydolly · 17/07/2021 22:17

Also I notice the predictable trolls are already leaving one star reviews on Amazon. If you've read it and enjoyed it please leave a positive review. I don't always bother but when someone is being deliberately trolled I always do.

Mollyollydolly · 17/07/2021 22:21

I wish Andrew Doyle was on a more mainstream channel with more viewers. Free Speech Nation is so good. If GB News goes down the tube I hope the BBC find the balls to commission it. That's where it should be.

PermanentTemporary · 17/07/2021 22:24

Re more books giving the more pro gender side

Whipping Girl by Julia Serano is often recommended and I've read about half of it.

Out of the Shadows by Christine Burns ought to be interesting

The Dialectic of Sex by Shulamith Firestone because she is often quoted as the origin of the view that women's liberation meant moving on to a point where sex was irrelevant.

PermanentTemporary · 17/07/2021 22:28

Argh sorry Trans Britain by Christine Burns

You can report fake reviews, I think.

Also you can click on the reviewer's name and read their other reviews, which are often an odd little glimpse into their lives.

Mollyollydolly · 17/07/2021 22:41

I have reported some. I think I may return for a glimpse into their lives!

ValancyRedfern · 18/07/2021 10:14

Excellent review by Kathleen Stock. I also highly recommend her book Material Girls.
Guardian review.

www.theguardian.com/books/2021/jul/18/trans-by-helen-joyce-material-girls-by-kathleen-stock-reviews
Quote from the Guardian review:

"Instead, we get an exasperated polemic accusing activists of so aggressively overreaching themselves as to provoke “a backlash that will harm ordinary trans people who simply want safety and social acceptance”. They’d be better off focusing on improving trans healthcare, Joyce argues, not demanding access to women-only spaces or puberty blockers for teenagers. But what if being able to use women’s changing rooms, rather than fearing violence in the men’s, is very much an issue of “safety and social acceptance” to many trans women – albeit one that may leave some women feeling less safe? Refusing to acknowledge these fundamental conflicts precludes finding solutions."

My bolding. That glorious irony of the final sentence in the paragraph will escape few, I feel...

I think Gaby Hinslif's review will turn out to be a useful one.

PermanentTemporary · 18/07/2021 13:35

I think Gaby Hinsliff's review is really useful. I've been waiting for a thoughtful review from the broadly non-GC viewpoint. Quite brave of her to write it.

The barrister who defended May Forstater's employer got a ton of at least verbal abuse. I hope Gaby Hinsliff doesn't.

4ammusings · 29/07/2021 08:54

Thanks for this thread. Have ordered both Helen Joyce and Kathleen Stock’s books.

AfternoonToffee · 29/07/2021 09:00

My copy is hopefully on its way to me. Managed to get it from Hive, it had gone out of stock and had come back in so worth checking periodically if still needing a copy.
