5 times she reported him before he murdered her, and they gave her a fine. I have no words.

What a horrible example of structural sexism, misogyny, masculine strength and male violence against women all coming together.

How can we not be consumed with rage?

AssassinatedBeauty · 23/03/2021 11:25

This is my local police force. Every time I see a post on Fb from them about domestic violence or harassment/stalking I will post about this so that people don't forget. It was horrific.

Usagi12 · 23/03/2021 11:28

I'd not come across this page before. It's horrifying, she was 19 and let down so horribly. All these cases are awful but this one gets me. This could have been any of our daughters.

That's outrageous. That poor young woman and her family. I'm glad they named the police officer.

adviceseekingnamechanger · 23/03/2021 11:33

This is utterly horrifying

NiceGerbil · 23/03/2021 11:34

I was going to say not again but I think (am hoping) this is the same case as a while ago where s woman was fined for this

Ereshkigalangcleg · 23/03/2021 11:35

The Shana Grice case is horrible. That police force was asked about it in some chat I saw and they still maintained they were right to fine her. Complete lack of empathy or regret that she died, even if they were just following procedures.

annonymousse · 23/03/2021 11:35

This is sickening. That poor poor girl

justanotherneighinparadise · 23/03/2021 11:38

God that made my cry. That poor girl.

Usagi12 · 23/03/2021 11:39

I wonder what happened with the officers
PCC John Milne was found guilty of gross misconduct so presumably would have been dismissed but PC Godfrey was found guilty of misconduct so probably kept his job. Pricks.

Also my local police force.

He had done things like let himself into her house and watched her sleep. Yet every time he got let off with a warning or told to stay away from her.

After he physically assaulted her, she called the police but didn't disclose that they'd previously been in a short relationship. I assume she thought they might take it more seriously than they had previously if they thought it was random attack.

He got away with a warning and she got fined for wasting police time for not disclosing the relationship (I don't believe she lied about the relationship, she just wasn't asked and didn't say).

It's horrific.

Then after it all, it came out that 13 other women had come forward to report him for stalking.

abstractzebra · 23/03/2021 11:42

This was my local police force and it is one of the most upsetting stories I have ever seen.
I remember when it happened.
Sussex Police have got a pretty poor track record but not sure how it compares to others.
We had our own nightmare with an antisocial neighbour and myself, my two children and other neighbours were regularly at risk of injury or death with absolutely no support whatsoever.
I will never forgive them for how they treated my family and neighbours.
They even had the cheek to send me a letter after 6 years of hell to say that they probably should have done better.
I would have liked to think they had learnt something from their previous mistakes but I have a female relation who is currently being harassed by her male neighbour including a nasty assault and they have done nothing except give him a number of friendly warnings and they come away believing everything he says despite there being CCTV which they won't even look at. Nothing ever changes!

CardinalLolzy · 23/03/2021 11:45

Yes, this case is from 2016 but is so horrific I think there is so much to be learnt from it. I just feel so sick.

The police and justice system need proper funding but they also need to recognise how to avoid this and to do their jobs.

FourWordsImMuNiTy · 23/03/2021 11:47

The Sun story is illegible on my phone. Does it talk about the killer’s long history of harassment of other girls and young women?
The failure to join the dots is a repeated hallmark of these cases.

LibertyMole · 23/03/2021 11:49

This is absolutely horrendous. She was so young as well, making dealing with the police even more difficult.

RB68 · 23/03/2021 11:49

This is widespread amongst Police FOrces we have had several cases local to me in midle=ands including a friend of mine who was stalked by her exH including phones, email hacking and car trackers. NOTHING done and when she phoned from the marked house no repsonse

thosetalesofunexpected · 23/03/2021 11:55

An people wonder why some people like myself are Protesting on uk streets about women's safety and about uk Gov Control on the possibility of passing a bill to ban Any Protests !

Are some people Just Stupid thick as Shit Not understanding this or What !

Datun · 23/03/2021 12:05

Bloody hell.

Mr Justice Green criticised Sussex Police saying: “Tragically, when she sought help from the police, she received none.”

Not just received no help. The police were complicit. They are morally implicated.

Jesus.

memberofthewedding · 23/03/2021 12:11

I was stalked by a male neighbour for years. There was no "relationship! between us other than the one in his head. He was a local taxi driver who lived 5 minutes walk away. I had been in his cab a couple of time and he knew I lived alone. He used to come and bang on my door at anti social hours (anything from midnight to 6 am) and make weird noises. Never tried to break in or physically approached me but it was scary enough. The police were no use - they just said get cctv evidence. I never responded to his knocking or answered. One would think he would have got tired as it went on for years. Eventually he moved away.

CardinalLolzy · 23/03/2021 12:39

Bloody hell member that must have been terrifying!

abstractzebra · 23/03/2021 13:00

@memberofthewedding that is awful.
The police have a number of weapons in their arsenal to deal with situations like this but they just don't seem to want to use them.
Even if anyone is 'lucky' enough for their stalker/harasser to at least be warned and they don't heed the warnings, it is supposed to be taken further but it's virtually impossible to get that done.
Also, people are given incorrect information like, for instance with harassment, 'well nobody else has complained'
There is no law anywhere which says that multiple people have to complain, yet it is used regularly as a tactic to avoid taking action and to undermine the victim and make them lose confidence.
From my own experience and getting involved in other situations, the police seem to spend so much time trying to avoid taking action, and dealing with the subsequent complaints and negative comments which follow, it would be cheaper and easier to just take affirmative action in the first place to make the perpetrator understand they mean business.
I think most people just want to see actions being taken within their communities to make them feel safe and represented properly, whether it be low level or a serious assault.
The harasser I mentioned previously, damaged the property of their victim, again on CCTV and done deliberately.
The police said that although it definitely was criminal damage (so covered by the law), it was not in the public's interest to prosecute!!! So the victim is not 'the public'?

Usagi12 · 23/03/2021 13:06

It's truly terrifying. I have to say I have one personal experience and it was with the Met ironically given what's been happening recently. A man I had worked with starting stalking me, letters, emails, constant calls and following me when I was out. For example if I went for a drink with friends he'd turn up at the pub and sit at another table and watch us. It went on for about a month before I contacted the police. They took a statement and said they'd go speak to him and to get back in touch if I had further problems. We'll I've no idea what they said to him but I never heard from or saw him again. As it should be!

Every time I hear about another woman being murdered and failures of the police and justice system I think I can no longer be shocked and then 8 read something like this and am shocked all over again.

I have no words.
