They always keep their jobs - it's a closed shop union

AssassinatedBeauty · 19/03/2021 16:35

Oh my goodness. That's horrific. He shouldn't do community service because it would be difficult for him?? Consequences for your actions aren't meant to be easy. How can a serving police officer keep their job after being convicted of a violent offence??

I wonder what his actual intentions were if he had succeeded in restraining her, given the misogynistic insults he was hurling at her??

letthegrassgrow · 19/03/2021 16:39

They do always keep their jobs.

WonkyCactus · 19/03/2021 16:43

I saw a reply to Marina Hyde's tweet about this saying that disciplinary proceedings could not start until the criminal case had concluded and it's unlikely he'll be keeping his job for much longer.

RaindropsSplashRainbows · 19/03/2021 16:44

Oh my god. That poor woman.

GrammarTeacher · 19/03/2021 16:46

That reply is right. You cannot have the disciplinary until any criminal trial is complete. The story is not over yet.
However, his complete lack of actual punishment from the justice system is awful.

There's also a story in today's papers about three Met officers being given just a written warning after sending each other texts about wanting to gang rape and murder a crime victim and saying they should only allow women to report crimes in exchange for sexual favours. This comes after an officer was removed from frontline duties for sending jokey memes concerning the Sarah Everard case. There was also the case of two Met officers taking inappropriate photographs of the bodies of Bibaa Henry and Nicole Smallman.

It's obviously not a few bad apples but a massive cultural problem within the police, and I don't think any awareness course that exists could fix it. How can women come forward about being a victim when there's evidence that they even find our murders trivial and funny?

Erkrie · 19/03/2021 17:05

He's not fit to be in the police. I hope he loses his job. Misogynistic scum.

Imnobody4 · 19/03/2021 17:37

As I understand it the length of training time for police officers has been reduced.i really think the training should have a complete overhaul, it would be a time to spot men who are unfit to be officers and fail them. The police officer who sent the meme was also a probationary officer. Young porn soaked immature males are being let loose with power.

The judge needs some retraining as well, this is a violent crime not a misdemeanor.

OhHolyJesus · 19/03/2021 17:41

Jesus that's horrific. How can he be allowed to stay in his job?

Justice has always be weighted against women but it feels more now than ever before, maybe that's just me or just the recent news but its never ending.

These are the people who are going undercover to protect women

The West Midlands police deputy chief constable, Vanessa Jardine, said: “Oliver Banfield was removed from public-facing police duties after the assault and while the investigation by Warwickshire police was being carried out.
“To protect the criminal case we’ve not been able to carry out our own misconduct investigation until its conclusion.
“Now sentencing has taken place, our investigation will be carried out and PC Banfield faces allegations of gross misconduct and is currently suspended.
“We understand the strength of feeling surrounding the desperately sad death of Sarah Everard and concerns on the issue of women’s safety but it would not be appropriate for us to comment further at this stage.
“Our role is to protect the public, who should be able to trust us. We therefore hold all our officers to the highest standards and we will take appropriate action against anyone whose actions fall below what is expected.”

He won't be keeping his job.

But what an absolute disgrace.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 19/03/2021 18:20

A bloody curfew?!!!! We’re basically all under curfew in lockdown; it’s barely even a punishment.

This is just sick

GrammarTeacher · 19/03/2021 18:27

Yes, the rage should be directed at the sentence. What was the judge thinking?

Zeugma · 19/03/2021 19:09

They're running this as a lead story on Channel 4 news now.

Apparently he tried to claim that she attacked him first. Incredible.

A neighbour's CCTV filmed his attack and they just showed part of it. It just defies belief.

MercyBooth · 19/03/2021 20:33

Channel 4 news report here

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 19/03/2021 20:52

Thanks for linking Mercy that footage is awful she looks so tiny as he’s wrapped around her; he has complete bodily control.

She’s had to be so brave & persistent to force the police to do their job - how many times has a woman not have sufficient resources (of whatever kind) & it’s been swept under the carpet?

RaindropsSplashRainbows · 19/03/2021 20:55

Well he wasn't going to pick on someone his own size now was he?

alwayslucky · 19/03/2021 21:02

Look at crimebodge on youtube. (One with 27 proved offences, still in the force)

donquixotedelamancha · 19/03/2021 21:10

His lawyer argued he should not have to do community service because it would be “difficult” for him to work with criminals.

Surely that should be 'other criminals'? How the hell did he get away with just a 3 month curfew?

RaindropsSplashRainbows · 19/03/2021 21:26

It used to be said that if you had a boxing or martial arts background that the judge would take that into account and give a harsher sentence due to the training you'd had in how to hurt people.

Sounds like this guy was using his specialist training.

Saltyslug · 19/03/2021 21:40

Awful. The police need to pull their socks up
