Daily acts of feminism - a thread for ideas

teawamutu · 14/03/2021 10:14

Pinched the idea shamelessly from another thread after an hour of speechless rage reading the papers and Twatter. I need to DO something.

I pledge to do something positive every day to stand up for women. Deeds not words.

Today was taken care of for me - a subscription to The Radical Notion for Mother's Day. I'm also going to fill out the VAWG consultation.

Thought might be good to share anything else we come across here, so anyone in need of ideas could check?

@TheRabbitOfCaerbannog

Buy books for DC by Onjali Rauf as previously mentioned, Gillian Philips and Rachel Rooney.

Thanks for the book recommendations! Love RR's my body is me, so do my girls. Can anyone recommend the best Gillian Philip book to start with? I know she writes YA books - are any suitable for an 8 year old?

Looks like it. You can separate by age range here and she seems to have books across all age ranges, from learning to read to YA, and there are results for the range you're looking for.

Okay, this is a bit bizarre. There seems to be a series there, in which book 2 has been set as age 5-8 and book 1 as age 9-12! Well, that can't be right. Grin

Anyway, this is book 1 and it might be what you're looking for.

Amazing, thanks Pothole!

PotholeParadies those Scarf Monkey items are brilliant, I’ve just ordered the Courage Calls T-shirt for myself and one for my niece.

CaveMum · 15/03/2021 08:28

I had another thought, and sorry if it’s already been mentioned:

“Sex Matters” has recently been set up and as well as asking for donations they are asking for people to volunteer their time and skills to help out. sex-matters.org/

They’ve got a big push today as the Domestic Violence Bill is in the HoL for an amendment which has been Stonewalled. References to sex are being removed and replaced with gender.

Great links in this thread. Am going to donate to local Women's Aid shortly, have meant to do this for a long time.

Just joined up with Sex Matters thanks CaveMum.

Need to reply to the excellent guest post

Last hour of Ann Sinnotts's allotment funder.

Her garden is also still open. An extremely important court case.

donated - I think I have done it before but happy to do it again as this is so important.

When I wrote to inform the local hospital trust that they were quoting the law at me with a completely false understanding they obviously ignored me because who am I to know more about the law than they do or their dodgy Stonewall advice?

I hope the EHRC are forced to do this properly.

I don't have much money spare and am committed to two small charities that I have personal connections with (both include work supporting women and children).
At work I try to challenge attitudes like 'boys will be boys' and encourage all children to treat each other kindly/gently. I never say we're sending clothes home for Mummy to wash and if dads look helpless I give them washing instructions! I also try to buy books with strong female characters.

DoorhandlesUnited · 15/03/2021 11:55

Ooh - my comment was deleted.
It was just saying some people don't know if a transwoman is born male - so make sure to tell them - 'educate them' you could say.

PandorasMailbox · 15/03/2021 12:06

@tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz

Pandora I love that. And you've lovely handwriting Wink
Thank you. That was my 5th attempt at making it legible Grin
marplemead · 15/03/2021 14:01

I feel really rubbish in comparison to you amazing women, but I filled in the VAWG consultation today. I was so angry that I ended up writing loads in the comment boxes. I've also requested a paper copy of the census, and printed off the template letter to enclose.

Thank you all for the practical suggestions. They are great for someone like me who gets overwhelmed by how much work there is to do, and that often leads to doing nothing.

highame · 15/03/2021 14:21

I refuse to apologise when it's not my fault and even when it is, I'm still not going to!

334bu · 15/03/2021 14:30

Just read the guest post about book "Pregnant then screwed..." Maybe get libraries to buy it or buy one and give to somebody who might need the advice?

MangoBiscuit · 15/03/2021 16:19

@sashh As a female student who studied computer science, and had an awesome female teacher who also seated the girls together, thank you! It made a real difference to my confidence levels in class, and I stuck with it. Which worked out well, because I'm now a software developer.

Leafstamp · 15/03/2021 16:31

Waitwhat23 · 15/03/2021 16:32

@sashh no, I'm not on Twitter, I think I got some ideas from Offbeat Bride

HighFemme · 15/03/2021 19:21

@Happinessisawarmcervix

Start playing Patriarchy Chicken.

The rules are simple - stop moving aside for men. You probably don’t even realise you’re doing it. Pavements, footpaths, supermarket aisles.

Be prepared for them to get very, very angry when you don’t immediately clear a path for The Mighty Penis.

“I suppose I’ll move then” muttered the male jogger when I didn’t.

“One of us has to, might as well be you.”

But he clearly expected me to clear the way for him.

Love this game, used to play it with the manspreaders on the tube in ye olde days before social distancing Grin

On a more serious note - this is a lovely thread, thanks all for the suggestions and resources Thanks

MaudTheInvincible · 15/03/2021 20:15

Yes I used to womanspread on the tube too Grin competitive space-hogging.
