Davina McCall wouldn't walk home alone in the dark

Quite an interesting take for someone who most likely never has to walk home alone in the dark from work. Problem solved, eh?

"I wouldn’t walk home alone in the dark. And lots of men I know wouldn’t either... because there are some ( very few relatively ) bad people out there. But your response is say you view all men as a danger and I don’t think we should be spreading that message."

That is so out of touch she might as well be on the moon.

Of course she wouldn't. She'd drive (v. expensive car, bet ya) or have her chauffeur do it while she tweeted on her phone. Her male friends are going to be celebs aren't they, dripping with Rolexes? Not gonna walk home.

What the hell does that have to do with the rest of us, without her income?

NiceGerbil · 13/03/2021 01:55

This walking after dark thing is such a sack of shit.

In winter it gets dark before loads of people are home from work.

Loads of people work shifts.

To never go out after dark by yourself would be incredibly restrictive.

And she claims most men she knows wouldn't eg walk home from the tube after work if it's dark? Bollocks.

And an appeal that most men are lovely.

So which is it?

If it's a tiny minority of men, the risk is very low. So why not go out after dark?

Drivel.

MrGHardy · 13/03/2021 02:10

Yes, that part about the men she knows is a joke. I was mugged once and it made me very aware of my surroundings and probably a lot more so than the vast majority of other men, but I still walked home in the middle of the night along an empty, dark canal rather than the longer route along the lit street.

I used to work lates at a homeless hostel. No parking nearby, no bus. I used to park in a road nearby we lovingly called Crack Alley because it was the only free parking nearby. Dealing, prostitution etc.

It was very poorly paid so no chance of a cab. I was an immigrant so no other job I could do. Men would follow us and ironically the homeless men we knew would sometimes fuck them off (because they were much less scary than the drink arseholes at pub kicking out time). I was genuinely scared and in real danger a couple of times.

WTF is Davina's solution to that?

Particularly as with all 'caring' jobs, the staff were 75% female. The men were quickly promoted out of course.

Where are you getting that from her tweet you linked to Confused

  • because she's famous, she has a bodyguard?
  • because she's female, she makes her husband/boyfriend/whoever walk with her at all times?

Or something else?

I think the idea is that she can probably afford a cab @Quaagars

PotholeParadies · 13/03/2021 02:33

Oh come on. Perhaps rolexes was overstating it, but "normal"? I doubt many of them are doing the 2-10 shift in Tesco, never mind unable to afford a taxi or a car.

I think the reasonable presumption is that the celebrity tv presenter might have one of these at her disposal: 🚖🚕🚗🚘🚙

@Handsoffstrikesagain

pothole Davina is part of a wider group of my friends. That group includes teachers, childcare workers, office workers, a couple of single mums that have recently started their own businesses, two guys that have had life changing MH issues - a vast mixture. I just really wanted to clarify that point. Not looking to derail but wanted to clear up any potential assumptions.
Anyone who can't afford a cab?

@Handsoffstrikesagain

mrsterry I’m not going to get into the ins and outs of everyone’s finances but I’d say yes at various points a few that couldn’t afford cabs. Also, a few that don’t own cars and live in the ‘not so naice’ part of town.
Not really the point

The point is, it was an idiotic comment and no help at all.

@Handsoffstrikesagain Fair enough that you and Davina share the same wide circle of friends. And no of course its completely not right to call out 'all men' on female abduction/murders'... But the stastics tend to lean very heavily towards mainly men commiting most female abduction/murder? Presumably there are reasons behind that then? I'll stick my neck out on the line and state it's because of related cases linked to; sexual motivation, men being physically stronger (generally) to be able to carry out attacks, motivated by attacks on previous/current partners, power motivation, plain old opportunity, feeling imasculated by 'rejection' of a woman they've randomly approached. Yes, all of which could also be said for male on male crimes. But very rarely said for women on male crimes of the same nature. Or am I mislead to think that? It's not about 'calling out all men', it's about women recognising that statistically we're far more likely to be low level harassed by men up to the point of abduction and murder than men by women. So imho Davina is talking out her bum...

Thing is this whole debate has women check mated. It’s a choice between raising a very real issue, but in so doing spreading a lot of fear that will result in people living in that fear. Robbing them of the liberty to fully take part and engage in society. On the other hand you try to minimise the perceived threat and you’re leaving women vulnerable.

MrsOrMiss · 13/03/2021 04:11

Any woman who trots out garbage like that is victim blaming. Be it Davina McCall or Ms Boggs down the road. They need to think before opening their mouths.

Clymene · 13/03/2021 06:08

@Handsoffstrikesagain

Hi starry as I’ve said I haven’t actually read what’s been said etc and completely agree with your points. I wasn’t at any point questioning that. I literally just wanted to clarify a point about assumptions regarding Davina's friends. Nothing more to it than that. Believe me as a survivor of CSA and then long term relationship with a man who beat me up and abused me for years, I know exactly how much more vulnerable women are. I never called that into question.
Eh? It's quoted in the OP Confused

Here it is again:

"I wouldn’t walk home alone in the dark. And lots of men I know wouldn’t either... because there are some ( very few relatively ) bad people out there. But your response is say you view all men as a danger and I don’t think we should be spreading that message."

Perhaps if Davina has got loads of 'ordinary' friends, she'll stump up the cash so they don't have to walk home in the dark either. Hmm

But really the point of this is she's basically saying it's Sarah Everard's fault she was abducted and murdered. With a hefty dose of Not All Men thrown in.

Maybe you could tell her the optics aren't good next time you see her.

Xoxoxoxoxoxox · 13/03/2021 07:10

Well I have to walk home in the dark, I sometimes work late and can't park near my house, I have to park 5 or 6 streets away and walk down some very quiet roads. Should i give up my job? Should women only leave the house with a male chaperone after 9?
We don't all have the luxury of choice and I think it was an odd remark and the other part about Not All Men - we know that but we should be able to talk about it I don't think she should be leaping in to defend men at this point it would be a good time to focus on violence against women.
