Jo Bartosch reports on the first ever Detransition Awareness Day and asks Keira Bell why it is so important people hear destransitioners’ stories and experiences.

I thought this was very apt to post here.

It's sad. We can't go 1 day without them trying to silence us, can we? Well that survey they all love quoting? It came specifically from polling trans people and those under trans care, of course the only ones who will respond are temporarily detransitioned.

Nevermind that they're trying to overshadow us with re-transitioners or with comics and selective articles of those who detransitioned due to lack of acceptance.

There are those who feel mutilated, neutral, or even happy but we all were still "failed."

Helleofabore · 13/03/2021 09:18

Just want to highlight this part for those who have attempted this on this very thread.

zzizzer · 13/03/2021 09:28

Indeed. Those indoctrinated in the cult cannot fathom unbelievers leaving and having a life away from it. I'm glad they've been ignored on this thread.

WarriorN · 13/03/2021 09:58

Bloody hell @lionheart

You feel it's important to only listen to the stories of one type of detransitioner on detransition awareness day?

Personally, I feel we should hear all their stories - how can we help to prevent people arriving in this position if we don't have the big picture?

NotBadConsidering · 13/03/2021 10:18

You started a thread that is still active where people have questioned how “conversion therapy” is meant to be measured in the setting of the many, many detransitioners who wish they’d had their thoughts challenged, and you’ve been asked about whether they should just be ignored. You ignored those questions, yet here you are saying you want to hear from all people. Maybe you should return to the thread you started and explain how you think detransitioners fit into the concerns around “conversion therapy”.

HermitsLife · 13/03/2021 10:18

how can we help to prevent people arriving in this position

By not dressing up watch and wait or symathetic psycotherapy as Coversion Therapy and demanding it be banned.

Cailleach · 13/03/2021 10:22

We really really really really really really really really need better and earlier diagnosis of autism in young people.

REALLY.

zzizzer · 13/03/2021 11:00

Better diagnoses and also we need to stop the pornification of society. God knows how but women are being more sexualised than ever before in history, and men are getting more entitled. I'd want to identify out of it too.

Watching and waiting isn't conversion therapy - that's actually the whole reason puberty blockers are used - to extend the period during which you can watch and wait.

Sympathetic psycotherapy isn't conversion therapy - it's a very useful resource for many transitioners.

Conversion therapy is any attempt to force someone's gender identity to change. That is known to be harmful to trans people, hence the push for a ban.

Again, "having your thoughts challenged" isn't necessarily conversion therapy (though it could be used in the context of conversion therapy).

Conversion therapy is any attempt to force a person's gender identity to change. It is known to be harmful to trans people.

We also need to stop treating autistic people as idiots who who don't know who they are.
YetAnotherSpartacus · 13/03/2021 11:38

Back to transitioners ...

AdHominemNonSequitur · 13/03/2021 11:46

@Shizuku

It's very important to hear the stories of detransitioners - by understanding what went wrong for them that we can refine treatment protocols and get treatment to trans kids even sooner.

It is at least good to know how rare detransition is.

Unfortunately, a lot of detransitioners detransition, not because they aren't trans, but because they can't live with the relentless transphobia of the society they live in. Again, we need to hear their stories and tackle transphobia head on.

Utter bollocks. Gas lighting, inconvenient truth denying unadulterated bollocks.
HermitsLife · 13/03/2021 11:52

Putting a physically healthy child on puberty blockers is not watching and waiting. Its a medical intervention that stunts the child's development.

Detransitioners need to be listened to and taken seriously and gender clinics need to start recording and analysing detransition rates properly rather than just handwaving them away.

Xoxoxoxoxoxox · 13/03/2021 12:07

BBC article about de-transitioning:

Debrah Cohen

Transtioned F to M aged 44 and has now trasitionied back aged 61.

Charlie Evans

She has since set up a support network for detransitioners and said she had been contacted by about 300 people, including some who had surgically transitioned. She admitted she could not verify all their stories.
"Most of us are same-sex attracted," she told BBC News. "Most of us identify as either lesbian or bisexual and a lot of us are autistic."
Charlie said many of these women felt at the time they had sought treatment, "they were not in a state that they were able to give consent [to medically transition] because they felt so unwell with eating disorders or depression
".

I don’t.

I also don’t feel the need to qualify their experience with ‘but whatabout’.

HermitsLife · 13/03/2021 12:31

This is from a while ago but the blasé attitude of the Tavistock spokesperson alarmed me

Helleofabore · 13/03/2021 12:34

And using puberty blockers is not watch and wait. Three high court judges were involved in sorting out that misconception being pushed by those who wish to ignore the health effects on females in particular of using those drugs.

Well known if you look at the group action that is collecting in the US for one of those drugs used in precocious puberty.

Helleofabore · 13/03/2021 13:08

What struck me was the degree of harm wrought on the bodies of some of those female transitioners. And sometimes after only a short time on testosterone. And with or without puberty blockers.

Kidney failure, mini strokes, total hysterectomies, mastectomies going wrong.

This cannot be ignored or downplayed as ‘just a few’. Not when you read of the complications of transition on transmen’s bodies that haven’t detransitioned.

I think there is so much not being talked about about female health here. I would like to have some robust facts and stats about the true safety of these treatments.

Erkrie · 13/03/2021 13:11

I think it's so useful to have this thread here, bringing together people's stories. And it's so telling when some try to derail it.

FindTheTruth · 14/03/2021 14:11

video about a new guide for people thinking about detransition in English, French, German and Dutch

WarriorN · 14/03/2021 14:11

Fab thanks for that!

CardinalLolzy · 14/03/2021 15:12

It's eye-opening really how much a lot of the stories that are told are about bodies and feeling distraught because their bodies aren't like other bodies.
