Jo Bartosch reports on the first ever Detransition Awareness Day and asks Keira Bell why it is so important people hear destransitioners’ stories and experiences.

On detransition awareness day, it is important to remember when talking to detransitioners that they are not necessarily at the end of their journey as many go on to retransition. It's important for them to always have options before them, and not to have people try to fix them in position.

It's OK to transition if you feel it's right for you.

It's OK to detransition if you feel it's right for you.

It's also OK to retransition if you feel it's right for you.

Iamhangingin · 12/03/2021 15:55

Just watched Sineads video. I can't imagine how it must feel to detransition and get absolutely no medical care from your gender clinic. It must feel like you are totally abandoned and the only information would be from other detransitioners who often face bullying for speaking about their experiences.

highame · 12/03/2021 16:10

Flowers Flowers Flowers Flowers Flowers

nothingcomestonothing · 12/03/2021 16:34

Flowers to all detransitioners, wishing you all the support and care you need and deserve.

[/quote] She was hanging out with a friend enjoying life and didn't have time to watch anti-feminist videos. And she moved from the 'Right anti-feminist' to the left.
AfternoonToffee · 12/03/2021 16:49

The video from Sinead was very powerful. Why is the call for better treatment from the outset so taboo?

FindTheTruth · 12/03/2021 16:54

a collection of detrans stories from female detransitioners and desisters

WarriorN · 12/03/2021 17:39

I've been watching these videos during the day and gosh, how difficult and traumatising it is for these young people.

I'm angry there's no real support from professionals on their behalf. I'm angry about the fanfare trans gets but how detrans gets pushed aside and denied by organisations who drive the fanfare.

I'm also struck by how eloquently they talk about their experiences and grateful that they are; I'm sure it helps others who are thinking this was not the right choice. Thanks for all

This is good:

YetAnotherSpartacus · 12/03/2021 23:41

Yes, keep this on track.

It is good to have a thread that amplifies the voices of this very silenced and marginalised but also very brave group.

lionheart · 13/03/2021 01:44

@christophelston

'I just got attacked by about 7 people. Punched multiple times. Signs smashed. Bodycam gone. Forearm might be broken. Police are on the way.'

WarriorN · 13/03/2021 07:01

@lionheart is that on the right thread?

WarriorN · 13/03/2021 07:02

This is what's anger inducing.

Gosh that is good.

*Lesson learned, younger me. Don’t let the pushy, glitzy Instagram “before and after” photos fool you- a mastectomy is ALWAYS a big deal.

I felt like I might be crazy having this kind of reaction to the surgery. I had binged on smiling, triumphant pictures of post-op trans men. The gore and the pain and sadness were not what I had expected.

I posted on the ftm reddit about feeling a strange sense of grief at the surgery, and asked if anyone felt the same. Many other members of the forum came out of the woodwork to agree. Even if they were happy with the end results, they still felt loss and pain.

Not only that, but my feelings of gender dysphoria increased. My obsession migrated to my hips, my voice, and my very mannerisms. The top half of my body looked okay, but what was I going to do about my hips? The way I moved? I was more obsessed than ever before with monitoring myself. I told myself I was being liberated, but really it felt like I was stacking the bricks to my own prison walls.*

WarriorN · 13/03/2021 07:25

And just horrifically sad.

Evarish · 13/03/2021 07:56

I've listened to numerous detransitioners and find it difficult to amplify voices without furthering the fear many have that their stories are only used to either limit people's access to transgender health care, or for them to feel tokenized.

At the same time, hearing of some detransition groups which refuse to allow their members to even mention the name of the group to anyone other than a possible new member rings massive red flags (especially given their vulnerable state), but I don't even know if safer groups exist. They should, as should gender identity clinics be trained in handling detransitioning rather than solely transitioning for those who want access- given the amount of overlap, depending on the steps a detransitioner took in their previous transitioning.

Helleofabore · 13/03/2021 08:23

I've listened to numerous detransitioners and find it difficult to amplify voices without furthering the fear many have that their stories are only used to either limit people's access to transgender health care, or for them to feel tokenized.

And yet, if everyone let these detransitioners talk and talk freely then better levels of care and support can be achieved. I find that line of ‘limiting people’s access to transgender health care’ is only pushed by activists seeking to discredit this group.

The reality is that line has come from the court case that should have shocked everyone to the core. That the Tavistock offered (and still likely does) poor quality care and didn’t even keep sufficient records or follow up to check despite their own staff raising flags.

Not only that, but the same activists call anyone who advocates for a tailored care plan that does not fit their narrow definition of affirming only care, a bigot.

Sadly. The message will only be listened to by some if the detransitioner is the ‘right type’ of detransitioner. Just like the trans people who we are constantly told are the ‘wrong type’ of trans person because they have a viewpoint that is different to the activists.

The message is clear. Detransitioners want changes made on all parts of the process and it is now time for everyone to listen without ascribing ill intent to their views in any way.

Everyone.

FindTheTruth · 13/03/2021 08:41

Detransitioners want changes made on all parts of the process and it is now time for everyone to listen

Their voices and ideas will help everyone, including trans. So I hope they can get support to write to their MPs and respond to calls for evidence.

These brave women need to be heard by MPs and represented in the House of Commons and Scottish Parliament when debating things they have unique insight into, such as trans healthcare, conversion therapy, gender recognition act reform. And to be heard by the Care Quality Commission CQC, Women's and Equalities Committee WESC, Government Equalities Office GEO. And in the house of Lords.

Outoftheshadow · 13/03/2021 08:44

A man walks into the doctors and says “doc I’m ill what can you do for me I feel like I’m going go die”

Doc takes a ‘quick’ look and says
“aah well if you dont get treatment you’ll most likely die, but there’s a new treatment drug available that seems to get results faster than others. It’s not been properly tested, there’s no real data on its efficacy and we don’t know if there will be as we’re not following up on its success. What we do know is that you’ll most probably be left infertile and it does mean surgery to amputate your leg - shall I write out a prescription? ”

Man - “well sounds good doc. Appreciate it seems to get results fast, but I’m concerned about the effects on my body can you tell me a bit more about other treatments”

Now substitute the word ‘man’ with ‘unaccompanied adolescent who believes they are trapped in the wrong body’ and ask how different the conversation and outcome is likely to be?

Thank god for The Royal Courts of Justice in

Yes Out. Yes.

Dozer · 13/03/2021 08:56

Evarish what healthcare are you concerned about being restricted? Why do you think people discussing experiences/detransitioning could affect availability?

Access to mental healthcare is inadequate across the board in the UK, for example.
