Just leaving this here before I go off to my lab (possibly a hate crime soon):

Bumping.

I think English, Welsh and Irish MNetters should also contact these MSPs.
We are still one United Kingdom.

Believing and talking about reality should not be 'made illegal'. That is very bad law.

334bu · 05/03/2021 08:47

Please also ask your MSPs to REJECT Amendment 24 by Humza Yousaf which proposes to downgrade the mandatory collection of data on hate crimes by sex to data that "may" be collected. There is currently no data on how many female victims of hate crimes there are across the characteristics, compared to men. Many organisations, including FWS and Engender, have stressed how important it is to have sex-disaggregated data.

I find the above particularly worrying, especially given the Gender and Sex Data draft guidance, where it was made clear that the collection of sex disaggregated data was considered to be often not necessary. Deliberate move by SG?

Will be emailing again. I've only just heard back from my Labour MSP . The gist was 'ooh, we know some of you think civil liberties are important but really hate is vewy bad so it's importanter to stop women saying nasty things like 'sex is real'.

They are far too quick to discard protections that people worldwide have fought for. And with such a wide range of organisations shouting a warning - police, church groups, feminists, the BBC, law experts, etc. It's madness to ignore them and throw together such a shitty, arse-backwards bill. But here we are.

Babdoc · 05/03/2021 09:23

The SNP are incapable of drafting coherent laws (Named Person?) or being a competent government. I hope the latest Salmond/Sturgeon corruption debacle will finally open their deluded supporters eyes to exactly what they are voting for. If we could get them out of office in May, we need never fear this Orwellian dystopia again.

ArabellaScott · 05/03/2021 09:28

we need never fear this Orwellian dystopia again

The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.

And I'm afraid I have little faith in the Westminster government protecting our rights, nor the Tory government that has brought us the whole self ID debacle.

They want who to stop saying what? Biology teachers must be looking their pants...

If anyone is writing to the Greens (and I hope Patrick Harvie is swamped with emails Grin) it might be worth mentioning that not only did Bracadale recommend adding sex to the Bill - but the inclusion of sex in hate crime laws was first proposed by Robin Harper, Green MSP, some 18 years ago. So you'd think they should support it now.

334bu · 08/03/2021 18:06

Just got a reply from Labour MSP and it seems Labour might support the inclusion of sex in the Bill

Hm, my reply from Labour MSP seemed to lean far more towards 'sex is bigotry' - paraphrasing.
334bu · 10/03/2021 10:32

Interesting Arabella. Wonder if I'll get a different slant if my other super woke Lab MSP deigns to reply.

Magic, Manderley, ta. I'm trying to transcribe on here as I go but MBM and FWS will know more of what they speak!

malloo · 10/03/2021 17:13

Amendment defeated Shock We are really up against it here in Scotland

Manderleyagain · 10/03/2021 17:29

Yes defeated so sex won't be an aggravator in the hate crime bill.

Now they are debating an ammendment on the dwelling defence - ie to create a free speech defence if the alleged hate speech was spoken at home. Being tweeted by @_freetodisagree
They don't thread their tweets so just go to the account.

Liquorishtoffee · 11/03/2021 08:07

Why am not seeing this/hearing this in the media? R4 has been reporting - extensively - and I interviewing people - on the back of the ‘conversion therapy’ hooha. But this - that will really cause a lot of fear and is incredibly anti woman... nada. They haven’t reported (that I have heard) on R4 about the ONS s-storm either.

ArabellaScott · 11/03/2021 08:28

The final vote is today, Liquorishtoffee, maybe it will be reported after that. But it is incredible that this Bill, the most divisive and unpopular in the history of the Scottish Parliament, is not being reported on as it progressses. The Times has a piece, linked to in the other thread.

UppityPuppity · 11/03/2021 08:34

Yes defeated so sex won't be an aggravator in the hate crime bill.

Is it likely that this bunch of sorry #### will do any self reflection today - with the emphasis in the media this morning about crimes against women because we are women - that aggression based on sex (I.e femicide) should be have been voted as an aggravating factor.

  • women are physically weaker than men. That in itself should have been a clincher.

The damage that the Scots Gov has just inflicted on women - because we are women- should be headlining the news in the current circumstances.

Liquorishtoffee · 11/03/2021 08:36

Thank you. I am so raged about this. That snickering wee git and his ‘oh well could be categorised hate if a woman is mistaken for trans woman...’ Actually making a joke?? 😡

Yes I had a wee dig - you wouldn’t necessarily find it unless you were purposely looking.
