An important read.

Thanks for the link. That is an excellent article.
I am Irish and I feel a real sense of despair at what is happening in Ireland.

Iseult White, who was mentioned in that article, is the granddaughter of Sean McBride, who founded Amnesty Ireland. She is also Great granddaughter of Maud Gonne and John McBride. When Self ID was introduced in Ireland she supported it. I think it was the letter that was signed by Amnesty, (and several other groups, including the National Women's Council) supporting the silencing of those that opposed it, that caused her alarm.

It is good to see that this is being reported outside of Ireland, hopefully it will become harder for the Irish media to ignore it

Because right now, they are ignoring it.

WarriorN · 28/02/2021 08:18

I'm in England and I must say I feel I know little of what's going on in Ireland.

I'm glad people are questioning this.

A horrible example. I only ever hear about this stuff via mn.

I read an article in The Times yesterday that said Amnesty had removed Alexa Navalny from their Prisoner of Conscience list under pressure from the Russian news company Russia Today. Seems in the face of it an extraordinary thing to do. They have now reversed this and reinstated him and are going to investigate the decision making process that led to it being withdrawn. Amnesty does seem to have lost its way recently.

Ah, Rod Liddell evidently hadn't heard about their reverse ferret (4th bit down)...

I suggest that the only reason Amnesty are investigating the Navalny mess up, is because it hit the headlines. A great organisation brought low because bubble mentality destroys clarity of purpose and many of these organisations suffer from this. Years of Inbreeding. Sunday Times is my afternoon paper read, so saving Rod Liddle for later

FionaMacCool · 28/02/2021 09:21

@WarriorN thank you for linking to the article, I wouldn't have seen it otherwise.

I am in Ireland and am very aware of the issues about which Julie has written here.
Iseult White (referenced in the article) has come under enormous pressure on twitter, since she took the stance against Amnesty (an organisation I stopped supporting several years ago, due to their position on sex work).

Here, Amnesty is an organisation run by and for men. In Ireland, the Executive Director is a man who overcame being abused as a child, so he is somewhat Teflon with regards to criticism.
I dont believe he has any good insight into issues affecting women, and I dont believe that he takes good account of the power dynamics in Irish society regarding the position of women here.

On another thread here, there is reference to the "woke crowd" (I think the poster is 7Days) in Ireland, who believe that they/we are better than the past.
They seem to believe that Ireland, which banned abortion and divorce and homosexuality, and which imprisoned single mothers, that this Ireland is dead and buried and they dance on it's grave to distance themselves from the mistakes.

Doing so, allows them to luxuriate in the idea that this is the "best little country in the world".

Sad to say, old Ireland is not dead.
It has put on a new dress and a bit of makeup, and it's still alive and kicking.

Jennifer O'Connell had an article in the Irish Times yesterday, praising "strong" single mothers, and postulating that there is no longer any stigma attached to single motherhood.
I beg to differ- in the past 12months, I have heard several instances where a child's behaviour is blamed on a "broken home" or "single mothers".

We, in Ireland, have a loooong way to go, before women's rights are truly protected. There will be lots of backlash "what about the men" (I heard it recently in the context of a women's business support network").
Men have the power in Ireland- they can sort out men's mental health (ref Mitchelstown), physical health, access to business supports etc etc.

Men in Ireland really have no clue about the level of discrimination and silencing that women here continue to experience.

Ron Liddell is actually the highlight of my week. He talks so much sense.

I have supported Amnesty financially for 25 years. I am disgusted by them

Has anyone cancelled their subscription and told them why?

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 28/02/2021 09:53

@Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow

Has anyone cancelled their subscription and told them why?
Several of us here did because of their lack of support for women.

They bid us good riddance - I don't think they cared if the door hit us on the way out.

Some people received letters that in summary stated they didn't want the money from people with attitudes they ascribed to us and others, iirc, had the phone put down on them when they called to discuss it. Must have been 3 or 4 years ago.

Mendingfences · 28/02/2021 09:54

They rang me and asked me to increase my direct debit. I said no and told the guy on the phone why. He was flumoxed that i thought biology was important and made it clear i was wrong.......

BraveBananaBadge · 28/02/2021 10:33

I did cancel my subscription but wasn't confident to tell them why at the time. I would now. Colm O'Gorman is a disgrace.

MadamBatty · 28/02/2021 10:37

I told them why & got a very sneering condescending attitude from them.

@CrazyNeighbour

Amnesty lost any credibility with me when they sided with the Pimps and the Johns ahead of trafficked women and children (and men too). Just another example of an NGO using the fig leaf of „Good“ to abuse others.
Do you have a source for "sided with the Pimps and the Johns"?

If you're referring to Douglas Fox, this is false: www.amnesty.org.uk/douglas-fox

So did my ex. She had a lot of respect for Colm O Gorman but he has made a total mess of this great organisation.
MargaritaPie · 02/03/2021 11:48

@CrazyNeighbour

They are pro sex work. That alone makes them pro pimps and John’s.
Complete decriminalisation is also supported by local and international health orgs such as the World Health Org, UNAIDS, HIV Scotland, the Royal College of Nursing and National AIDS trust.

Maybe they are pro-safety and find this model to be the safest in terms of health and safety?

Saying "they have a view I don't like, that makes them pimps!!!" isn't a debate, it's just ad-hominem (attacking the person, not the argument).

Cailleach1 · 02/03/2021 12:55

O'Gorman wanted tribunals and no stone left unturned about the systematic sex abuse children like him experienced.

O'Gorman conversely wants women and girls to stfu and #nodebate about legislation which dismantles safeguarding, encroaches on their rights and leaves us more vulnerable again. Women's vote should taken off them if they have the nerve to defend their biology. What a throwback he and his wokie bros are!

Great pals with other bro's who front men's rights. Bro's without Borders who are incandescent when women support each against their assault on our rights. The Irony.

Thank you OP. I have not attended or supported any AI event for many years and now have even more reason not to.
