DDOS attack

I wonder why MN is subject to a cyber attack.

Id happily pay for premium but I don’t particularly want my bank details hacked

I’ll do it another way...maybe a crate of gin? Would that work

NotTerfNorCis · 20/02/2021 19:12

Organising a DDos attack typically involves harnessing PCs via malicious software to create a botnet. It's a criminal act. Whoever is attacking us is committing a serious cyber crime.

Sophoclesthefox · 20/02/2021 19:26

What a coincidence, even more than bumping into Deirdre Chambers.

AngryBananaSund · 20/02/2021 19:30

They are probably using a bot network, that’s lots of computers infected with some sort of malware, the users of those computers probably have no idea their computer is doing anything unusual, except maybe running a little slow. The bot network answers to a master system that tells them what to do, and a lot of these networks are rented out. So if you wanted to ddos a system you rent several thousand systems and for the rental period they fire malformed packets at the target

picklemewalnuts · 20/02/2021 19:32

Charming.

youkiddingme · 20/02/2021 19:33

I think there are bots trying to self-id as mumsnetters.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/02/2021 19:37

Well.. the efforts of whichever malign entity is responsible seems, according to the Site Stuff thread to have resulted in work for MNHQ (Gin for them), unexpectedly clean houses and defrosted fridges, and the most adorable photo from PigletJohn.

So in some ways a bit of an own goal tbh.

I've got one of those pre-pay credit cards, no link to my bank account. Even if someone got the card details I only load it with enough each month to cover MN and a couple of other subscription services.
ErrolTheDragon · 20/02/2021 19:39

(One goal apart from the work for MNHQ , of course. Though if they find out who is behind it then that too is likely to be a misfire)

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 20/02/2021 19:39

Oooh ok

I’ll have a look

Thank you

dDos attacks don't go after personal details. They just swamp the service.
Gcnq · 20/02/2021 19:42

To be fair denial of service attacks are quite commonplace, I once worked at a greeting cards company when their website was subjected to one.
No one had any idea why. A rival company maybe?

Doesn't necessarily mean the Feminist chat board is anything do with it. However Mumsnet is a fantastic Feminist site overall so it's quite awful to target it this way.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 20/02/2021 19:47

Yeah

It was more Jeremy and emily i was thinking of

Were those their names....maybe its jeffrey and emma

Or is jerffrey a giraffe?

Anyway...proper hackers or information thieves or whatever they are called

Are these kind of attacks seriously investigated, or just written off as 'one of those things'?

Do websites who fall victim to them have to report it?

Fascinating (but also really fucking creepy) to hear how it works though, I had no idea.

GlacindaTheTroll · 20/02/2021 19:51

It's a large site with a mixed reputation for security.

Back at the time of Jefferygate, someone C&Ped messages for 4chan - it was nothing at all do to with site content. Like the majority of attacks, it's japes

youkiddingme · 20/02/2021 19:52

When my kids were teenagers I used to play the odd online role-playing game with them sometimes. Gaming sites were constantly subjected to this.

But aren’t they also sometimes used as cover / a distraction for stealing data?

AngryBananaSund · 20/02/2021 20:35

I don’t see that working because they’d be disrupting the same communications they’d use to take data. If the site is down it’s pretty secure?

Last time they stole passwords and usernames that MN had shockingly stored as plain text.

He also hacked someone’s Twitter account and sent messages. When an MNer was rude to him on Twitter he got her address details and sent armed police to her door by claiming that he had seen an armed man there. She was alone at home with her two small children.

It was one young man on his own. Some men really hate women.

StanfordPines · 20/02/2021 20:49

Here we go.
When I say man I mean an 18 year old from a very nice background and a good school.

This witch doesn't burn.

AngryBananaSund · 20/02/2021 21:02

The Mumsnet report on this attack suggests it was a crude plishing method where lots of people got emails saying ‘click here to reset your password’ and they did !!!!

Wait, what have I missed? Where is the evidence that this is an attack motivated by feminism chat?
