Do you watch porn?

I've been reading a convo on Twitter where several people are claiming - including a woman - that women watch porn as well as men. My first reaction is, this isn't true. Sure, I've watched it from time to time, usually in the company of men, but it's so boring, so divorced from real sex/real bodies, that I'd almost rather do anything else.

Am I wrong? I realise I'm asking a group of women who are probably going to have a more cynical view of pornography, but I'm having a hard time believing women have a porn habit even remotely comparable to men's.

yes.

surprising to read people say there's no ethical porn. quick Google reveals 5 Million results. a quick google for 'ethical porn made by women' reveals 3 Million.

shrugs

Yeah, that's a really credible way of assessing whether something is actually ethical or not. Hmm

Definitely not. I am not prepared to collude and participate in the abuse of women

We watched it a fair bit together in the early year and occasionally now I will browse porn hub. By occasionally I've maybe done it three times.

No, gross. It’s a red line for me in terms of personal relationships.

No. I've seen it in my younger days but it left me cold. I don't see anything erotic about it. I masturbate often and have never once needed porn to do it. In my mind there is something very clinical about getting yourself off to porn.

You said it's not true then go on to say you've watched it yourself

No. I don't need the treatment of women in that industry on my conscience. I have my imagination, that seems to be more than adequate.

I think they mean that they think women dont watch porn as much, not that no woman has ever watched it

Its so cute that there are some women who believe that their man does not watch porn.

I think there’s a younger generation of sex positive intersectional feminists who watch (and create) porn. Lots of Only Fans accounts providing ‘porn’ in a more independent way - or that’s at least the image they want to project. On Instagram there’s an ‘edgy’ demographic that consists of classically ‘attractive’ young women supplying a steady stream of latex/Shibari/fetish images and a sense of women being empowered. Scratch beneath the surface and you can see the same narratives - usually super confident women ‘in charge’ but usually with an admission of underage exposure to porn themselves, first sexual experiences with older men while being underage, abuse etc. If you want to get an idea of attitudes to porn have a look at Reed Amber’s Instagram. A seemingly confident, ‘in charge’ woman who started filming porn in her late teens at Uni and who became a submissive slave to a couple at the age of 22 and is open and honest about her own predelictions for ‘filth’ and degradation
and something called CNC - consensual, non-consensual sex. She’s a sex educator, been on the cover of The Guardian, made sex-positive content for the BBC. I actually like her but don’t condone all that she’s promoting. Shes is open about her mental health issues. I can’t help but think that her involvement in sex work is not the totally ‘fun’ thing she makes it out to be. I believe there is a sadness and trauma behind it all and that she is not as ‘in charge’ as she tries very hard to convince us she is. I see an addiction but that’s just my opinion.

I’m only mentioning her because I’ve had an issue with porn and was quite ambivalent about it as a younger woman. Now I am disturbed at the way it’s been promoted as an empowering thing to not just watch but to create. I think many young women don’t want to be seen as prudes and in an effort to cast off any sense of ‘shame’ are being drawn into this pornified world.

Of course there’s a load of men prepared to watch these women expose themselves and dictate their degradation for $10 a pop on a webcam. Who benefits? Who really benefits?

And then there’s the ‘ironic’ campified porn of people like the C**k Destroyers. Particularly popular amongst gay men and transgender and sex-positivity champions The two porn actresses are veterans of the porn scene and are parodies of a pornified, Barbiesque, sex-doll aesthetic.

I find it all pretty depressing that I’m being encouraged to ‘celebrate’ this particular brand of female empowerment by certain champions (Owen J, Munroe B, Shon F) Yes, they are ‘successful’ women allegedly ‘running the show’ themselves but I’m sure a lot of people who hate women, love them.

Sorry for going off on a tangent but I thought it was worth acknowledging that there are a lot of young women out there who consume porn (and many who are sadly consumed by it)

Very rarely if I do, it's girl on girl porn and usually directed by a woman as most standard porn is from a male gaze and it's so boring.

I don't. Neither does DH.
When I first knew him, when we were at uni, he had one Fiesta magazine... but that was nearly 40 years ago, I don't think he's kept it.

I just finished a book about statistics which said apparently a relatively large number of searches on Pornhub are by women

Probably skewed by the many women forced to search for their own 'revenge porn' material, before (unsuccessfully) begging the site admins to take it down

I used to when I was much younger. But as I read more about the exploitation involved it stopped being sexy and started being gross. I read a lot of erotica though!

Yes. Though to be honest I mostly read the darker type of romances because I have certain kinks and the porn that caters to those kinks is probably the worst out of the bunch.

So I read (and write it) bc I know nobody's getting harmed that way.
