Which brands do you boycott and why?

I'm determined to avoid purchasing products sold by companies that consider women inferior. Over recent years there have been quite a few such companies and I'm losing track. Just in the past week or so I've added Oatly and Innocent to my list although if I'm honest I'd only buy oat milk for guests and find Innocent smoothies and juices too sweet.

Which brands do you boycott and why?

I also try to shop local and independent shops, particularly for presents/cards/ crafts.

I boycott (but again in the sense of just not buying from them, than a political statement) Hallmark and Paperchase. All Christmas cards this year were made by an art teacher in Glasgow who was at school with my son.

PersonaNonGarter · 08/02/2021 01:28

Body Shop, Lush, Innocent.

Cannot stand Lush but it is a shame about the other two.

MissBarbary · 08/02/2021 01:28

@Glenchase

L’Oreal, Chanel, Tom Ford - because of animal testing.
Again, just not on my radar.

I see Molton Brown is on the list- what's their crime? They are reputable re animal testing.

Re animal rights- I'm about 90% non- meat eater. If I do buy meat it's likely to be venison which isn't intensively farmed, whether wild or farmed or Scottish lamb (again sheep are not intensively farmed) and obviously free range eggs. Before Covid, duck and hen's eggs were supplied by a colleague who kept a small , free range flock.

I do not buy any products containing palm oil.

AsTreesWalking · 08/02/2021 06:50

I - like many PPs I'm pleased to see - haven't knowingly bought anything from Nestle since I read about the babymilk scandal when I was a teenager.
I only buy Fair trade coffee, tea, bananas
Coca cola - because of water theft
I don't buy from Lush, Body Shop, Primark, Topshop, Dove , Flora, Avon, Innocent, Oatly (thanks for the list MissB) Mostly because they are not products I use.
I won't buy clothes made in sweat shops.
I avoid products containing palm oil (oh so many!), food that has travelled ridiculous miles, factory farmed meat and anything with artificial scent (allergies)
Cut flowers because of air miles, water use, land degradation (although Arena are decent www.arenaflowers.com/pages/about-us/)
Vegetables from Spain - slavery theecologist.org/2015/apr/16/salad-days-semi-slavery-sweating-fields-southern-spain
It does all make shopping complicated, doesn't it?
I don't think I can give up Audible!
I use Ethical Superstore for household/cleaning products, and second-hand as much as possible.

Aside from the brands that have gotten attention on FWR for their misogynistic attitude such as Innocent, Lush and The Body Shop, I also avoid big fast fashion brands like H&M and Zara. Not only don't they find it worth paying the seamstresses a living wage but after hearing about them getting cotton for Chinese forced labour camps, it's a total no from me.

StillAWoman2 · 11/02/2021 09:27

All of the previously mentioned FWR misogynistic companies plus many magazines for their promotion of the more hectoring trans activists such as Shon Faye and Munroe Bergdorf or promotion of anal sex to teens

So that’s Grazia magazine and any published by Conde Nast

Shame as I love a magazine Blush

Sillydoggy · 12/02/2021 14:39

Molton Brown dropped their no animal testing stance to sell into China about 5 Years ago. If you want to sell into China their govt insists on animal testing for all products.

DisgustedofManchester · 12/02/2021 15:03

in 2017 the Queen said 'gender' not 'biological sex' during her speech at Christmas. Just a thought

Conniethesensible · 12/02/2021 15:25

@jumperjet

I do not buy any products containing palm oil.
I agree palm oil causes huge destruction across Indonesia, however coconut, rapeseed oils are far far worse. So if you are going to boycott it I’d look into any products that use these also.
Yumyumdindins · 12/02/2021 15:36

What has Flora done? I have just bought some and now I wish I’d gone with another brand, they seem to keep cropping up on here

MissAnneThropeOfYorkshire · 12/02/2021 15:45

@Susie477

Sports Direct.

A horrible business owned by a ghastly obese oaf which sells chavvy tat to the dregs of society. Innit, bruv...

Mike Ashley is an arsehole, but your post is also very offensive

Always, they got rid of the symbol for woman from their packaging because of a tweet that not just women have periods.

Tittyfilarious · 12/02/2021 18:50

Sorry that should say symbol for female

HereForTheFeminismChat · 12/02/2021 19:00

Body Shop is my most active boycott - had been a long-term customer. My mum has also been informed - no more Body Shop gift boxes at Christmas!

As for "little" boycotts (where I wouldn't describe myself as a regular customer) - Starbucks, Innocent and Readings Book, once the plague goes away and I can travel to Melbourne again. I shall withdraw the latter boycott if their MD can issue a proper apology to Julie Bindel.

LondonPainter · 12/02/2021 19:57

@JosephineDeBeauharnais same as you on Boots. I switched to Superdrug after the MAP episode and have never looked back!

SunsetBeetch · 13/02/2021 08:19

Yes it just took one tweet. Yet they ignore the many women who don't want stinky sanitary towels (I had already stopped buying them because of this, orherwise I would have boycotted).
SunsetBeetch · 13/02/2021 13:10

Although this is the biggest reason people should boycott Always. It seems black women are right at the bottom of the pile for Always (as for so many things).
