Which brands do you boycott and why?

I'm determined to avoid purchasing products sold by companies that consider women inferior. Over recent years there have been quite a few such companies and I'm losing track. Just in the past week or so I've added Oatly and Innocent to my list although if I'm honest I'd only buy oat milk for guests and find Innocent smoothies and juices too sweet.

Which brands do you boycott and why?

I won't be buying from Body Shop again, partly because of their response to JK Rowling, partly because of their MLM selling practices these days.

Flippyferloppy · 02/02/2021 16:06

Nestle - regular lies about baby milk to mothers in developing countries. They also don't think that access to water should be a right. Avoiding them is a nightmare though, they are everywhere!

Conniethesensible · 02/02/2021 16:08

While not a brand per se. I will never go to Dubai. (Saudi Arabia, Qatar too). Like the way they treat women and LGBT folk. No matter what the influencers say.
Also Ryanair. Just as the CEO is a tit.

percheron67 · 02/02/2021 16:09

Don't Body Shop use ingredients that are not tested on animals though?
For me, using cruelty free would outweigh most other things.

tobee · 02/02/2021 16:12

Flora and The Body Shop currently.

FenEel · 02/02/2021 16:15

Body Shop. They just mightily pissed me off with their JK Rowling nonsense, and I used to get loads from them. I don't normally have the energy to boycott brands but I am boycotting them, the smug patronising gits.
I am much less inclined to buy from Lush nowadays but I did buy some Xmas gifts so it's kind of a half boycott.
I would boycott Oatly as their Guardian supplement just left me open mouthed with how appalling it was at the weekend - I was scouring Twitter and here to see if I was the only one but it seemed like nobody else had read it at that point- but I hate milk substitutes anyway. DH is the Oatly buyer in this house.

Pronounciata · 02/02/2021 16:21

Oh no, what happened with Oatly, I don't think I want to know!

merrymouse · 02/02/2021 16:35

It's interesting that so many of the brands that try to sell an ethical stance are either dodgy or owned by questionable people: Body Shop and it's MLM schemes, Innocent owned by coke and criticised for misleading labelling, Oatly partly owned by Trump investment company Blackstone.

I know that is the way the world has always worked, but it's still disappointing.

UselessYoke · 02/02/2021 16:37

Body Shop. They don't know what a woman is, so they obviously don't need my business.

peak2021 · 02/02/2021 17:13

Ryanair because of Mr O'Leary's policies and support for the Grand National which I think is a cruel horse race.
Primark because of their supply chain.

In both cases the majority of the impact falls on women who are part of the exploitation and unacceptable behaviour.

YouokHun · 05/02/2021 15:07

Any business that is happy to exploit women using “empowerment” as a cover; so all pyramid schemes/MLM such as Body Shop at Home, Arbonne, Forever Living, Usbourne, Neals Yard, Tropic, Herbalife, Avon etc etc

bishopgiggles · 05/02/2021 15:54

Body Shop, sadly (used to buy loads there), using an account of VAWG to bully and try and sell products.
Innocent - I don't really care about who they do or don't follow on Twitter but I've realised how unhealthy their drinks are and it's not like there are no alternatives.

bishopgiggles · 05/02/2021 15:55

Oh and Neals Yard due to their deeply unethical stance re homeopathic products (there was a bit of furore over this several years ago).
I found Dove ads painfully patronising a while ago so have avoided those for a while but I don't really do a 'proper' boycott.

TaraR2020 · 05/02/2021 15:58

What have Innocent done that is anti-feminist?

I haven't drunk their smoothies in a long time since they became very sweet after the were sold by the founders.

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 05/02/2021 16:04

Boots. They over priced the MAP and tried to double down when called out over it. Basically they want to make it difficult for women to access it.

“Didn’t want to incentivise inappropriate use” cheeky bastards

4Mongrels · 05/02/2021 16:10

Body Shop, Lush and all MLM.

BurfdayCaked · 05/02/2021 16:52

I didn’t know that about Boots! I’ll think twice before shopping there again. What a mean-spirited, misogynistic attitude!

Sillydoggy · 05/02/2021 16:57

We have an animal testing free household without resorting to body shop and lush - it is possible, thank goodness.

What is the status on M&S’ changing rooms - I saw the Baroness’ tweet but haven’t seem an announcement from them, anyone know?

RedHoodGirl · 05/02/2021 17:12

I left Tescos last year after they donated to Mermaids, and wrote to the CEO to explain why.

Never heard anything back, but I do get lots of emails and money-off coupons from them regularly - from the begging they have clearly noticed that our household that used to spend 1,000 a month there now ... just... doesn't.

Lifeinaonesie · 05/02/2021 17:22

@RedHoodGirl

Body Shop Lush Boots Top Shop Primark M&S Flora Co-op Ocado Always Innocent Audible
Could you say why for each one? I'm intrigued! I'm not sure I could live without audible.
Glenthebattleostrich · 05/02/2021 17:26

Same as RedHoodGirl, plus P&G products. Always because I dont like my fanjo smelling like pot pouri.

Squidsister · 07/02/2021 11:23

Body Shop after their awful comments to JKR. Used to buy all my hair and body products from them, but have changed to other brands now. There are lots of companies now selling cruelty-free products so it hasn’t been difficult to switch.

Squidsister · 07/02/2021 11:23

I am looking at Oatly alternatives now after reading the other thread.
