Boyz magazine and the LGB Alliance

Boyz magazine mentioned a webinar by the LGB Alliance on its twitter account and made clear that people might not agree with the LGB Alliance, but for the purposes of community debate, why not hear it out?

That is absolutely outrageous. I really wish the LGB Alliance would sue. Where health is concerned isn't ideology irrelevant. Doctors aren't supposed to discriminate against people they don't like. It's bullying pure and simple.

Winesalot · 30/01/2021 11:53

I remember watching the fall out from the webinar as it happened and how destructive it was. And then Boyz even capitulated.

Now it is clear it does not matter a jot that they apologised. The punishment is going to be ongoing.

And all for calling for people to listen and make their own minds up. Boyz didn’t even give an opinion on whether it was a good or ‘bad’ webinar. Just asked people to make their own minds up.

PotholeParadies · 30/01/2021 11:54

That's a hard-hitting article.

I regularly donate to THT, but I had no idea they'd weighed in on the Boyz twitter-storm. I agree with Mr Bridle and I think they've got their priorities arse-about-face. The priority has to be reaching people with undiagnosed HIV, not political purity over the magazine's tweets.

QueenoftheAir · 30/01/2021 12:05

Julie Bindel made this same observation in her talk at last Saturday's excellent webinar "Do Not Adjust your Set" - that once you're branded as a transphobe nothing you can say ever changes that judgement. She herself made a fair & sincere apology, but is still no-platformed & threatened with assault.

It's witch burning or ducking all over again, isn't it? If she drowns/burns, then of course that proves she was a witch; if she doesn't drown or burn, that proves she is a witch, as she's used magic to survive.

NonnyMouse1337 · 30/01/2021 12:24

Did they not post on their Twitter account at the time that they were also going to appoint a trans woman to their editorial board as part of the whole begging for forgiveness process? I wonder what happened to that.... As it turns out none of that matters because they will be punished in perpetuity for even daring to mention LGB Alliance. 🙄

It's really shameful how a vital health screening service for gay men is being treated as something that only those with the 100% correct viewpoint have access to.

BraveBananaBadge · 30/01/2021 12:38

Another case of strange bedfellows... Spiked and Boyz. Bet they never dreamed that’s the only place they’d get a fair hearing. It’s insane!

ArabellaScott · 30/01/2021 12:42

Yes, Nonny, I seem to remember them appointing a transwoman and some people complaining that it was supposed to be a male mag for males.

I do wish more people would follow Arla and the Spectator in just telling the bullies to fuck off. It makes them look so much more sensible, robust and professional. If you're thinking of your brand, companies, think of the long term. Are you going to constantly capitulate to every loudmouth on Twitter who casts aspersions and makes ridiculous, unfeasible demands, or are you going to shrug, move on and ignore them?

HettieMills · 30/01/2021 12:50

That's absolutely insane. And the message these people wedded to trans ideology are giving is clear, that it's only trans ideology that matters. Nothing else. Even if people get hurt, sick or die as a result of it. Preserving this ideology is far more important than the health of gay men and the safety of women. There are no words...

Well said, ArabellaScott.
I switched all our dairy shopping to Arla since that episode. I will support businesses that remain professional and that remember their purpose is to sell their products and services to as many people as possible, without capitulating to every outrage junkie that crosses their Twitter feed.

OvaHere · 30/01/2021 12:59

This seems like crazy priorities. Makes the THT look very petty and like many of these publicly funded large orgs makes me question if they've lost sight of their purpose.

Sorry kids no Innocent smoothies this week, Mum spent it on Boyz magazine in solidarity! Grin Grin Grin

zanahoria · 30/01/2021 13:00

I am hoping this furore will enlighten a few more people to this ideology that cannot actually be defended, censorship is its only weapon.

Oh ffs

No one is right or wrong about everything all the time. You cant go arguing with facts just becuase of who did or didnt say it.

So now an important message for gay men , many all of which may have views lots of people agree/disagree with and who will.be as nice or nasty as anyone else, but all.of whom should be provided with the basic human right of medical information and care, will be lost in the fighting to appease a few vocal people on twitter.

What the hell is that meant to achieve fgs.

What a sorry state if affairs that apologising and appeasing people comes before life saving information

RozWatching · 30/01/2021 13:03

Feeling very sad after reading that. Gender identity activism seems to destroy everything it touches.

Odense · 30/01/2021 13:05

I do get the feeling that the wind of change is in the air.

It is a barely perceptible zephyr, but there’s a scent of fresh hope. People are waking up to the inherent totalitarianism. I think it is that that will swing opinions. Not who is actually ‘correct’ in the TRA vs TERF war, but people tire of others policing everyone’s opinions.

If cancel culture is challenged, then it should become apparent who actually IS on the right side of history.

DeaconBoo · 30/01/2021 14:21

We had a previous thread on this at the time - www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4090953-Gay-mens-magazine-bullied-into-grovelling

JustTurtlesAllTheWayDown · 30/01/2021 15:51

I was absolutely horrified by this. They removed funding for an HIV testing edition that reached over 55k men, and as the article mentioned, the purpose was to specifically reach out to a demographic who might be unaware of their HIV status, and would particularly vulnerable to the coronovirus.
This is a new low, even by trans activist standards.

SunsetBeetch · 30/01/2021 16:03

This is shocking. What the hell are THT thinking???

SetYourselfOnFire · 30/01/2021 19:46

Trans activists aren't bothered by gay men or women dying. That's the long and short of it. Are you paying attention gay men? They're not your allies.

PotholeParadies · 30/01/2021 20:43

That's a very important point.

Suppose David Bridle was transphobic (I don't think he is) and suppose the majority of Boyz readers were transphobic and read it for that reason (I don't think that either)? Suppose all that was true?

Would the management of the Terrence Higgins Trust feel the charity was entitled to wash their hands of them? Do they actually think their charitable aims only include supporting HIV positive people with the approved beliefs?

NecessaryScene1 · 03/02/2021 20:38

Well, it looks like it's spawned something:

David Bridle is founding a new magazine:

Lesbian & Gay News

Why we're launching Lesbian and Gay News

'They're throwing the lesbians under the bus,' said a friend I’ve known for 15 years. The truth struck me like a bolt of lightning. We were talking three years ago about the polarised, and sometimes vitriolic, debates about sex and gender which had started wrecking our community’s conversations then. And still are.

We're launching Lesbian and Gay News this month as an alternative source of news and opinion. We believe there are an increasing number of lesbians, bisexuals and gay men who want to read nuanced journalism that more closely reflects their lived experience and their personal beliefs. They want a safe and secure online space to read about issues that matter to them, to connect and to debate. Lesbian and Gay News will offer that.

Most UK and US lesbian and gay news outlets now embrace an all-encompassing umbrella belief in LGBTQIA+ as the only perspective through which they are prepared to report the world. But such a uniform mindset often stops discussion of issues important predominantly to lesbian women or of concern only to gay men.

NonnyMouse1337 · 03/02/2021 20:47

Yes!!!! Woo hoo!! Will be interesting to see what it's like. It's good to have a wide variety of news magazines. Stops viewpoints percolating in a single source or outlet.

BrassicaRabbit · 03/02/2021 20:58

Fantastic news!

zanahoria · 03/02/2021 22:05

I remember reading Gay News and Gay Times back in the day, always good reads and great radical journalism.

Trans issues asides so much of the gay press these days just seems infantile.

OP posts:
MindtheMinotaur · 03/02/2021 22:19

So, another of those spectacular own goals by the trans activists.

I read some of the tweets on the Boyz thing. Seeing a children's charity headed by a straight woman, lecturing on the content of a gay magazine for adults was distasteful.
