The BBC isn't even attempting to be responsible. They are deliberatly targeting young people. They disgust me.

In the UK, many young trans people are taking matters into their own hands, getting unregulated hormones online and starting their transitions themselves.
This film follows Charlie Craggs, influencer and author, as she meets teenagers across the country who have been waiting years for a first appointment at an NHS gender identity clinic, to find out the risks and sacrifices they are undertaking to start their transitions.
With the average wait in England for a gender identity clinic appointment currently between 33-36 months, many young people feel as if they have no other option than to begin their transitions without medical intervention. With statistics showing that the attempted suicide rate amongst young trans people is almost double that of cis young people, Charlie Craggs asks what more can be done to support trans teenagers during transition.
This topic is not without controversy – Charlie meets a doctor who has been struck off in relation to her work with trans patients, and a lawyer who is launching a case in the high court on behalf of a 14-year-old who has been waiting over a year for his first appointment with the NHS. And in the light of a recent high court judgement stating that teenagers are no longer able to give informed consent to hormone blockers, Charlie meets a teenager who changed their mind and detransitioned to find out what went wrong.
In this film, Charlie uncovers a system which doesn’t seem to be working for the young people in it and looks at what’s needed for young gender non-conforming people.

"With statistics showing that the attempted suicide rate amongst young trans people is almost double that of cis young people, Charlie Craggs asks what more can be done to support trans teenagers during transition."

Why are we supposed to go along with the narrative that they must be supported to transition? Teenagers are notoriously rash and impulsive. They don't need access to hormones and drugs, they need guidance and someone who can get down to the "why do you feel like you're in the wrong body"? They need to hear the message that it's ok to not act/dress/look like a stereotypical boy or girl.

I think we are in for an avalanche of unhappy kids and adults in the future who were duped into thinking transitioning would make everything better.

Gross. I seriously can't believe that adults who are supposed to care about/for children think children who are feeling suicidal are in a decent enough state of mind to make life changing decisions. What the fuck?

LiverColouredBitchPointer · 14/01/2021 19:05

Why are they not receiving help for their gender dysphoria i.e.therapy?

rabbitwoman · 14/01/2021 19:17

If children were given complete freedom and bodily autonomy to make their own decisions without safeguarding or laws then they would:

Probably stay at home all day playing computer games

Drink and smoke

Send naked pictures of themselves to strangers on the Internet

Have inappropriate relationships with much older people

Watch inappropriate films and telly

Eat macdonalds all day, every day

Dye their hair green, cut it all off, shave it into a mohican

Deal drugs for older people

Give up on exams, coursework, lessons

Fight

Get tattoos, probably of their first boyfriend / girlfriends name

Get pregnant, get married

We make rules for them and set boundaries for them because honestly, they would not be capable of looking after themselves!!

Why do we allow this one exception!!!????

themiserychick · 14/01/2021 20:32

I find the online trans diy community really disturbing and inappropriate. They tell each other what hormones to take, how much, and what they're supposed to do to the body. They give each other tips on how to hide them from parents and anyone else they don't want knowing. Of course, they won't explicitly tell you where to buy, but I'm sure it's just a private message away. The reason that they do this is because of supposed "gatekeeping" from doctors who won't prescribe hormones straight away and without question. They recommend that you start taking the diy stuff before going to a doctor so that you can get a legit prescription easier, as it's duty of care to get you off the unknown stuff.

It just makes me so uncomfortable and angry.

Biscuitsanddoombar · 14/01/2021 20:37

Bloody he’ll could they be any more irresponsible. Continuing to peddle the lies about suicide, putting the Webberleys on TV becatse who else is it going to be? And all fronted by a TRA who set up a go fund me to get their boobs done

Fucking hell

Iamanaubergine · 14/01/2021 21:15

Seems Charlie Craggs is a transwoman who transitioned age 20. No bias there obviously.

AvocadoBathroom · 14/01/2021 22:11

Why do the BBC want to stop children having their puberty?
In plain sight.

AvocadoBathroom · 14/01/2021 22:12

There used to be a word for this.... what was it? Mooming? Wooming? Grooging?

Clymene · 14/01/2021 22:46

Craggs didn't take puberty blockers and seems quite happy. Why are people like Craggs so keen to get children to halt their puberty?

CranberriesChoccyAgain · 15/01/2021 03:40

Imagine if body dysmorphia were treated this way?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 15/01/2021 08:50

Good point, Clymene.

What also worries me about the BBC doing this is I think for some kids it almost validates the message as trustworthy, no ulterior motives, we often watch or listen to the BBC together. It's not some unknown bogeyman type on YouTube it's the same people who bring us wholesome family viewing like Strictly. This makes is even harder to encourage critical thinking.

Kit19 · 15/01/2021 09:21

exactly! this is presented by someone who works for Stonewall www.stonewall.org.uk/people/charlie-craggs

there is zero chance of a balanced presentation of the issues. All it will do is validate the "you're real family doesnt understand you but your glitter family does" that already struggling teenagers feel

to do this after the Tavistock case and all the implications of that is beyond irresponsible, its fucking criminal!

MedusasBrandyButter · 15/01/2021 09:31

I didn't see this live and the page says it's not yet available to view, but unless there are HUGE warnings about:

  • self-diagnosis,
  • self-medication with powerful (literally body-altering and mood-altering) substances,
  • funnelling money to a suspended doctor,
  • and accepting this suicide claim without a reference (thought very possibly from sources Transgender Trend warns about, here: www.transgendertrend.com/the-suicide-myth/),

this is no better than the sort of video which ought to be removed from YouTube or Facebook for disinformation.

Unhappy adolescents consulting Dr Google (with a second opinion from private Dr Tumblr) without adult feedback?! What could possibly go wrong? Confused

dratalanta · 15/01/2021 10:19

Dye their hair green, cut it all off, shave it into a mohican

When I was fourteen I was very excited about dying my hair purple. I made a huge mess of the towels and bathroom, spent hours cleaning up, looked in the mirror when my hair had dried, and... my brown hair was still brown, with the faintest purple undertone in the right light. Lesson learned.

Parents should leave teens alone to make harmless, reversible decisions about their appearance - even if those decisions are stupid ones. It's the irreversible decisions where teenagers need proper gatekeeping.

Imnobody4 · 15/01/2021 10:22

Yes I think it's important that we watch it. It could turn out to be an objective look at the current position (but I doubt it)
I think that it's being programmed on BBC 3 shows it's aimed specifically at a young audience who are possibly vulnerable is what is unforgiveable.

I think it is extremely irresponsible to feature Webberley. She has been suspended for running an illegal gender clinic!

RozWatching · 15/01/2021 11:22

"a doctor who has been struck off in relation to her work with trans patients, and a lawyer who is launching a case in the high court on behalf of a 14-year-old who has been waiting over a year for his first appointment with the NHS"

Webberley and Maugham?
This should be a Panorama report.

RozWatching · 15/01/2021 11:25

Yep. I'm gobsmacked that BBC is running this but let's see.

@RozWatching

"a doctor who has been struck off in relation to her work with trans patients, and a lawyer who is launching a case in the high court on behalf of a 14-year-old who has been waiting over a year for his first appointment with the NHS"

Webberley and Maugham?
This should be a Panorama report.

Webberley must have been in touch with them. It now reads:

a doctor who has been suspended in relation to her work with trans patients

More here about Webberley's 'work with trans patients':

Tribunal document with details about her suspension.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 15/01/2021 12:12

Yes, in relation to her illegal "work with trans patients" Hmm

RepealGRA · 15/01/2021 12:15

One hopes the BBC isn't promoting "DIY hormones" from unregulated sources in this programme. Testosterone is a controlled drug. There could be very serious legal consequences, surely?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 15/01/2021 12:16

I imagine there could be, RepealGRA.

TheGreatWave · 15/01/2021 13:18

Why is this type of programme thought to be remotely acceptable? Why not a programme for those with eating disorders telling them how to circumvent services, or where to buy the best pills?

The latter would be considered totally unacceptable, yet make it about trans and suddenly it is all fine and dandy.
