BBC 3 DIY Trans Teens

The BBC isn't even attempting to be responsible. They are deliberatly targeting young people. They disgust me.

In the UK, many young trans people are taking matters into their own hands, getting unregulated hormones online and starting their transitions themselves.
This film follows Charlie Craggs, influencer and author, as she meets teenagers across the country who have been waiting years for a first appointment at an NHS gender identity clinic, to find out the risks and sacrifices they are undertaking to start their transitions.
With the average wait in England for a gender identity clinic appointment currently between 33-36 months, many young people feel as if they have no other option than to begin their transitions without medical intervention. With statistics showing that the attempted suicide rate amongst young trans people is almost double that of cis young people, Charlie Craggs asks what more can be done to support trans teenagers during transition.
This topic is not without controversy – Charlie meets a doctor who has been struck off in relation to her work with trans patients, and a lawyer who is launching a case in the high court on behalf of a 14-year-old who has been waiting over a year for his first appointment with the NHS. And in the light of a recent high court judgement stating that teenagers are no longer able to give informed consent to hormone blockers, Charlie meets a teenager who changed their mind and detransitioned to find out what went wrong.
In this film, Charlie uncovers a system which doesn’t seem to be working for the young people in it and looks at what’s needed for young gender non-conforming people.

@Lammergeier

I think it is extremely irresponsible to feature Webberley. She has been suspended for running an illegal gender clinic!
Are you promoting cancellation? Surely not. She has enough right to be heard as any other in the debate.

Here is the issue. There is no open door and fast transitions. These kids are seeking help, and the system is not available to work it through with them, whether it is a trans outcome or not. What they need is more support and funding. That is what will stop them feeling they need to use offshore services which may not be as robust

"She (HW) has enough right to be heard as any other in the debate..."

She may, but that is not the point.

I notice none of the Olympic broadcasters have hired Lance Armstrong as a commentator.

Novelusername · 05/08/2021 18:06

I remember seeing this Charlie character on Instagram before, where they were slagging Suzanne Moore and making misogynistic comments about her having wrinkly skin and saying that she needs to use moisturiser. Here's another interesting post from Charlie with a screenshot talking to a kid in their DMs, then encouraging other kids to DM them so Charlie can go to their school and pretend to be their mother. No problem there, right?

On a platform funded by the public, not sure. Unless they also gave a viewpoint by someone on the opposite end of the debate in this programme?

mollythemeerkat · 05/08/2021 18:17

Does a doctor who has been suspended have the right to give clinical opinions (about which she is being officially questioned), on a programme aimed at young people, some of whom may be tempted into below the counter medical intervention. Surely there is a duty of care involved here somewhere?

DdraigGoch · 05/08/2021 18:21

"With statistics showing that the attempted suicide rate amongst young trans people is almost double that of cis young people, Charlie Craggs asks what more can be done to support trans teenagers during transition"
My understanding is that this suicide rate does not improve after transition. This leads me to suspect that teens with mental health issues were just looking for any magic solution to their problems.

DdraigGoch · 05/08/2021 21:10

"In broad terms we found that Dr Webberley was a very unimpressive witness who demonstrated a marked unwillingness to accept obvious points and to seek to avoid giving straight answers"
Given what the tribunal said, I hardly think that someone described as "an unimpressive witness" is someone appropriate to be given a platform with an audience of vulnerable and impressionable teens, at least without being challenged and set in the context of being suspended and the conviction.

If Panorama were to cover this properly on the other hand...

On the one hand you have Mermaids encouraging teachers and other professionals - anyone who can do a GIDS referral - to bypass CAMHS and just get a referral in asap for any child showing any distress around gender, because if it turns out to be something else they can just be referred back to CAMHS.

On the other hand you have a working environment that is so toxic for responsible professionals in the field that they are whistleblowing and leaving in droves. They know they can't do their job properly under the MOU on conversion therapy and they know this will only get worse if the proposed new law is not extremely carefully worded.

So you have more and more kids being referred to the service and fewer and fewer professionals wanting to work in it.

I know we are all tired of complaining to the BBC, but it can have an effect, albeit usually very delayed.

Cannot believe they are pushing this 'documentary' featuring Webberley who is currently in a 55 day hearing over her behaviour, and the presenter Craggs is happy to Tweet "suck my transsexual dick" at people who disagree with them.

Gross. I seriously can't believe that adults who are supposed to care about/for children think children who are feeling suicidal are in a decent enough state of mind to make life changing decisions. What the fuck?

No mention then of rates of suicide and attempted suicide sharply increasing AFTER transition?

Do you know where I could get a source for this? I'm currently arguing with my DS's school about this and they mentioned suicide as a risk for trans kids. It would be good if I could show them this. Thanks.

Helen Webberley (of unregulated online business Gender GP) is currently subject to a tribunal following complaints about how she has treated children identified as 'transgender'. She has been found guilty by a court and is suspended by the GMC:

"Allegation
The tribunal will inquire into the allegation that, between March 2016 and November 2016, Dr Webberley failed to provide good clinical care to three patients, and that in September 2016 she prescribed inappropriately to two patients.

The tribunal will also inquire into the allegation that, on 10 January 2017, during an unannounced CQC inspection of Dr Matt Limited where Dr Webberley was the Safeguarding Lead, she was unaware of, and had never seen, the safeguarding policy.

The tribunal will further inquire into allegations that Dr Webberley’s conduct was dishonest in relation to information she provided to the GMC and the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, and in her failure to provide relevant information to a pharmacy.

The tribunal will inquire into the allegation that, when acting as the principal provider of the Gender GP website, Dr Webberley attempted to avoid the regulatory framework of the United Kingdom.

The tribunal will also inquire into the allegation that, on 5 October 2018 at Mid Wales (Merthyr Tydfil) Magistrates’ Court, Dr Webberley was convicted of two counts in relation to the carrying on or managing of an independent medical agency without being registered under the Care Standards Act 2000, and was fined £12,000."

I found Jolyon Maugham QC's comments to be irresponsible and contrary to Samaritans' guidance.
BBC3 have failed their responsibility to responsible reporting.

Samaritans
(extract)
"Young people are particularly vulnerable in relation to media coverage of suicide and self-harm, care should be taken when covering these topics with a young audience."

I am not a BBC subscriber, but the reports of this film are so bad, that I may just put in my complaint anyway.

@Ferdy70

Spot on. This is a worrying trend and as a youth worker I'm seeing this come from nowhere this past 2 years. I don't believe for a moment that 100s or 1000s of teens before this struggled quietly with identity. It's usually the vulnerable kids coming to me to tell me they're trans.. Never the confident happy kids
Exactly, why is nobody in authority questioning why this has come on so suddenly in teenagers and young people?

20 years ago, there were other ways in which their distress was manifesting; self harm, cutting, eating disorders etc. This is just the new flavour of the day. As a PP said, can you imagine a programme about helping people with eating disorders or body dysmorphia get illegal drugs to suppress their appetite?

Teenagers in particular are very suggestible and willing to latch on to the next trend. So why is it just being affirmed with no questioning as to what is behind it?

In years to come there will be many lawsuits by young people who were irreversibly harmed by this crap.
